Proteomic analysis using mass spectrometry data is a powerful tool for biomarker discovery. However, proteomic data suffers from two crucial problems i/ are inherently very noisy and ii/ the number of features that finally characterize each spectrum is usually very large. In the present study, a well-established framework of data preprocessing steps was developed to deal with the problem of noise, incorporating smoothing, normalization, peak detection, and peak alignment algorithms. In addition, to alleviate the problem of feature dimensionality, a novel iterative peak selection method was developed for choosing peaks (features) from the pre- processed spectra, based on sequential global thresholding followed by particle swarm optimization. These features were fed into a probabilistic neural network algorithm, in order to discriminate healthy from prostate cancer cases and, thus, to determine, through the algorithm's optimal design, biomarkers related to prostate cancer.

An efficient spot-based (SB) algorithmic pipeline of clustering, enhancement, and segmentation techniques was developed to quantify gene expression levels in microarray images. The SB-pipeline employed i/a griding procedure to locate spot-regions, ii/a clustering algorithm (enhanced fuzzy c- means or EnFCM) to roughly segment spots from background and estimate background noise and spot's center, iii/an adaptive histogram modification technique to accentuate spot's boundaries, and iv/a segmentation algorithm (Seeded Region Growing or SRG), to extract microarray spots' intensities. Extracted intensities were comparatively evaluated in term of Mean Absolute Error (MAE) against the MAGIC TOOL's SRG employing a dataset of 7 replicated microarray images (6400 spots each). MAE box-plots mean values were 0.254 and 0.630 for the SB-pipeline and the MAGIC TOOL respectively. Total processing times for the dataset evaluated (7 images) were 2100 seconds and 3410 seconds for the SB-pipeline and MAGIC TOOL respectively.

The aim of the present study was to design and implement a Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)-based teleradiology system incorporating image processing and analysis facilities for use in emergency situations within a hospital environment The system comprised a DICOM-server, connected to an MRI unit, 3 wireless access points, and 3 PDAs (HP iPaq rx3715). PDA application software was developed in MS Embedded Visual C++ 4.0. Each PDA can receive, load, process and analyze hi-quality static MR images. image processing includes gray-scale manipulation and spatial filtering techniques while image analysis incorporates a probabilistic neural network (PNN) classifier, which was optimally designed employing a suitable combination of textural features and was evaluated using the leave-one-out method. The PNN is capable of discriminating between three major types of human brain tumors with accuracy of 86.66%. The developed application may be useful as a mobile medical tele-consultation tool.

As the need for mobility in the medical world increases, newer systems and applications came to light;many of them based on wireless and mobile networks. PDA based systems were presented in the past, capable of videoconferencing and transmitting high quality images between a roaming consultant and a fixed point in the hospital. These systems not only had desirable characteristics but also incorporated additional services that were found of value: paging, Voice over IP calling, Internet, email, intranet, patient record update, etc. This paper presents an engineering and clinical evaluation of those additional services based on both objective and subjective criteria. It concludes that such complementary services can be desirable as they increase personnel mobility, utilize the hospital resources more efficiently while at the same time increase productivity and decrease the cost of hardware and communications.

Minimizing the time required for a medical consultant to offer his/her expert opinion, can be viewed as a life-saving procedure. We have designed and tested an integrated system that will allow a medical consultant to freely move either within, or outside the hospital, while still maintaining constant contact with the patients via videoconferencing and high-resolution imaging. The above system is explained in this paper, along with its advantages and its potential limitations. Conclusively, we demonstrate that such a system further increases the mobility of the medical consultant, while improving the healthcare service

I-ImaS is a European project aiming to produce new, intelligent X-ray imaging systems using novel APS sensors to create optimal diagnostic images. Initial systems concentrate on mammography and encephalography. Later development will yield systems for other types of radiography such as industrial QA and homeland security. The I-ImaS system intelligence, due to APS technology and FPGAs, allows real-time analysis of data during image acquisition, giving the capability to build a truly adaptive imaging system with the potential to create images with maximum diagnostic information within given dose constraints. A companion paper deals with the DAQ system and preliminary characterization. This paper considers the laboratory X-ray characterization of the detector elements of the I-ImaS system. The characterization of the sensors when tiled to form a strip detector will be discussed, along with the appropriate correction techniques formulated to take into account the misalignments between individual sensors within the array. Preliminary results show that the detectors have sufficient performance to be used successfully in the initial mammographic and encephalographic I-ImaS systems under construction and this paper will further discuss the testing of these systems and the iterative processes used for intelligence upgrade in order to obtain the optimal algorithms and settings.

Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) has been widely used as a performance evaluation tool to measure effectiveness of medical modalities. It is derived from a standard detection theory with false alarm and detection power interpreted as false positive (FP) and true positive (TP) respectively in terms of medical diagnosis. The ROC curve is plotted based on TP versus FP via hard decisions. This paper presents a three dimensional (3D) ROC analysis which extends the traditional two-dimensional (2D) ROC analysis by including a threshold parameter in a third dimension resulting from soft decisions, (SD). As a result, a 3D ROC curve can be plotted based on three parameters, TP, FP and SD. By virtue of such a 3D ROC curve three two-dimensional (2D) ROC curves can be derived, one of which is the traditional 2D ROC curve of TP versus FP with SD reduced to hard decision. In order to illustrate its utility in medical diagnosis, its application to magnetic resonance (MR) image classification is demonstrated

This paper reports on the suitability of the SUSAN filter for the removal of artifacts that result from quantization errors in wavelet video coding. In this paper two extensions of the original filter are described. The first uses a combination of 2-D spatial filtering followed by 1-D temporal filtering along motion trajectories, while the second extension is a pure 3-D motion compensated SUSAN filter. The SUSAN approach effectively reduces coding artifacts, while preserving the original signal structure, by relying on a simple pixel-difference-based classification procedure. Results reported in the paper clearly indicate that both extensions efficiently reduce ringing that is the prevalent artifact perceived in wavelet-based coded video. Experimental results indicate an increase in perceptual as well as objective (PSNR) decoded video quality, which is competitive with state-of-the-art post-processing algorithms, especially when low computational demands of the proposed approach are taken into account. We introduce a complete problem solving environment designed for pulsatile flows in 3D complex geometries, especially arteries. Three-dimensional images from arteries, obtained from e.g. Magnetic Resonance Imaging, are segmented to obtain a geometrical description of the arteries of interest. This segmented artery is prepared for blood flow simulations in a 3D editing tool, allowing to define in- and outlets, to filter and crop part of the artery, to add certain structures (e.g. a by-pass, or stents), and to generate computational meshes as input to the blood flow simulators. Using dedicated fluid flow solvers the time dependent blood flow in the artery during one systole is computed. The resulting flow, pressure and shear stress fields are then analyzed using a number of visualization techniques. The whole environment can be operated from a desktop virtual reality system, and is embedded in a Grid computing environment. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2005.

Data clustering is intensively used in signal processing in tasks such as multimedia compression, segmentation and pattern matching. In this work we extend the use of principal curves in clustering to complex multidimensional datasets. The use of principal curve in clustering is limited for high complexity data. Automatic parameterization of the principal curve to assure good results for different datasets is a difficult task. We propose to use the tree structure to capture the general settlement of the data. Using this topology, regions of the dataset can be extracted, individually clustered using the principal curve and then optimally recombined. The experiments show the improvement of the new method over the principal curve based clustering and the good performance compared to other clustering methods.
