Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) has been widely used as a performance evaluation tool to measure effectiveness of medical modalities. It is derived from a standard detection theory with false alarm and detection power interpreted as false positive (FP) and true positive (TP) respectively in terms of medical diagnosis. The ROC curve is plotted based on TP versus FP via hard decisions. This paper presents a three dimensional (3D) ROC analysis which extends the traditional two-dimensional (2D) ROC analysis by including a threshold parameter in a third dimension resulting from soft decisions, (SD). As a result, a 3D ROC curve can be plotted based on three parameters, TP, FP and SD. By virtue of such a 3D ROC curve three two-dimensional (2D) ROC curves can be derived, one of which is the traditional 2D ROC curve of TP versus FP with SD reduced to hard decision. In order to illustrate its utility in medical diagnosis, its application to magnetic resonance (MR) image classification is demonstrated. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper presents a computer-assisted diagnostic system for mass detection and classification, which performs mass detection on regions of interest followed by the benign-malignant classification on detected masses. In order for mass detection to be effective, a sequence of preprocessing steps are designed to enhance the intensity of a region of interest, remove the noise effects and locate suspicious masses using five texture features generated from the spatial gray level difference matrix (SGLDM) and fractal dimension. Finally, a probabilistic neural network (PNN) coupled with entropic thresholding techniques is developed for mass extraction. Since the shapes of masses are crucial in classification between benignancy and malignancy, four shape features are further generated and joined with the five features previously used in mass detection to be implemented in another PNN for mass classification. To evaluate our designed system a data set collected in the Taichung Veteran General Hospital, Taiwan, R.O.C. was used for performance evaluation. The results are encouraging and have shown promise of our system.

Recent advances in the hardware of handheld devices, opened up the way for newer applications in the healthcare sector, and more specifically, in the teleconsultation field. Out of these devices, this paper focuses on the services that personal digital assistants and smartphones can provide to improve the speed, quality and ease of delivering a medical opinion from a distance and laying the ground for an all-wireless hospital. In that manner, PDAs were used to wirelessly support the viewing of digital imaging and communication in medicine (DICOM) images and to allow for mobile videoconferencing while within the hospital. Smartphones were also used to carry still images, multiframes and live video outside the hospital. Both of these applications aimed at increasing the mobility of the consultant while improving the healthcare service.

Printing techniques using classical halftoning need to resample the original image on the screen lattice. This resampling can cause undesirable moire artifacts in the screened image. For example, gravure printing is highly susceptible to moire, not only because its low resolution screen lattice but also because the degree of freedom in constructing halftone dots is limited due to the physical constraints of the engraving mechanism. Current resampling techniques compute new samples by simple interpolation methods, i.e., bilinear interpolation which cannot prevent moire very well. Therefore precautions against moire have to be made in the prepress-phase which is not practical and sometimes not feasible. This paper presents a novel technique to adaptively resample an image on the screen lattice using a local estimate of the risk of moire. The purpose is both moire suppression and edge preservation.

Object-oriented motion segmentation is a basic step of the effective coding of image-series. Following the MPEG-4 standard we should define such objects. In this paper, a fully parallel and locally connected computation model is described for segmenting frames of image sequences based on spatial and motion information. The first type of the algorithm is called early segmentation. It is based on spatial information only and aims at providing an over-segmentation of the frame in real-time. Even if the obtained results do not minimize the number of regions, it is a good starting point for higher level post processing, when the decision on how to regroup regions in object can rely on both spatial and temporal information. In the second type of the algorithm stochastic optimization methods are used to form homogenous dense optical vector fields which act directly on motion vectors instead of 2D or 3D motion parameters. This makes the algorithm simple and less time consuming than many other relaxation methods. Then we apply morphological operators to handle disocclusion effects and to map the motion field to the spatial content. Computer simulations of the CNN architecture demonstrate the usefulness of our methods. All solutions in our approach suggest a fully parallel implementation in a newly developed CNN-UM VLSI chip architecture.

We have developed a new signal-dependent representation which captures, with a few KL vectors and transform coefficients, the perceptually and phonetically important structure of the spectral envelope. Together with a mixed excitation strategy with some novel features, this representation has been applied to the analysis, synthesis, and coding of speech with promising results in the 5kbps range. © 1992 IEEE.

We present a method for the estimation of the filtering properties of living tissue from the experimental output data stimulated by inputting sinusoidal electric signals through intramuscular electrodes in the lower leg muscle. This method is based on approximating the tissue filter by a rational transfer function. The estimation procedure consists of three parts: estimation of frequency response from sinusoidal input and output data using a correlation method, recursive weighted least square (RWLS) estimation to synthesize a continuous transfer function from the frequency response data and discretization of the transfer function. The estimated "tissue filter" is then used in recovering the intramuscular signal from the surface signal. An example of inverse filtering real EMG waveforms using the estimated tissue filter is given.
