Background: In an era of shifting global agendas and expanded emphasis on non-communicable diseases and injuries along with communicable diseases, sound evidence on trends by cause at the national level is essential. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) provides a systematic scientific assessment of published, publicly available, and contributed data on incidence, prevalence, and mortality for a mutually exclusive and collectively exhaustive list of diseases and injuries. Methods: GBD estimates incidence, prevalence, mortality, years of life lost (YLLs), years lived with disability (YLDs), and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) due to 369 diseases and injuries, for two sexes, and for 204 countries and territories. Input data were extracted from censuses, household surveys, civil registration and vital statistics, disease registries, health service use, air pollution monitors, satellite imaging, disease notifications, and other sources. Cause-specific death rates and cause fractions were calculated using the Cause of Death Ensemble model and spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression. Cause-specific deaths were adjusted to match the total all-cause deaths calculated as part of the GBD population, fertility, and mortality estimates. Deaths were multiplied by standard life expectancy at each age to calculate YLLs. A Bayesian meta-regression modelling tool, DisMod-MR 2.1, was used to ensure consistency between incidence, prevalence, remission, excess mortality, and cause-specific mortality for most causes. Prevalence estimates were multiplied by disability weights for mutually exclusive sequelae of diseases and injuries to calculate YLDs. We considered results in the context of the Socio-demographic Index (SDI), a composite indicator of income per capita, years of schooling, and fertility rate in females younger than 25 years. Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

A tissue bath system, to be used as an alternative to complex perfusion chambers, was constructed for use in cardiac electrophysiological studies. This system consists of an acrylic chamber to hold circulating physiological medium such as DMEM, suspended in a water bath warmed by a hot plate. Temperature and pH were controlled to mimic physiological conditions. Rat and porcine cardiac tissues, were used to test viability of the conditions presented in the bath system. Using a cardiac mapping system, the tissues were stimulated and responses recorded. From the recordings we were able to calculate conduction velocities and spatial dispersion of activation indices. The results are comparable to previous in-vivo work, which suggests that the tissue bath system design can maintain tissue viability. This tissue bath system is a relatively simple alternative for ex-vivo testing of cardiac tissues. © 2011 IEEE.

Three groups of CoCr alloy stem-acrylic bone cement interface specimens with different surface finishes were used, namely, satin finish (n = 10), grit blasting (n = 12), and plasma spray (n = 9) to determine the effects of surface roughness Ra of stem on early microcrack activities in cemented THA. The goals of the study were to evaluate microcrack activities due to roughening stem surface. The results of this study suggest that microdamage to the stem-cement interface occurs at 0.108±0.031, 0.273±0.034, and 0.300± 0.085 MPa for the three aforementioned interface groups, respectively, much lower than would be anticipated for normal activities in a traditional joint replacement. The acoustic signatures of failure of the interface was dependent on the interface morphology with rougher interfaces resulting in much greater microcrack intensity, but generally of lower magnitude when compared to the smooth satin finished interface. This suggests that the failure mechanism is different for rough versus smooth interfaces, which is also apparent by analysis of the fractured interface surfaces.

Mentoring is significant personal and professional assistance given by a more experienced person to a less experienced person during a time of transition. Transitions from high school to university, from university to graduate school are difficult. Organizing and running mentoring programs in schools or in professional societies provide good recruitment and retention of female students in engineering. biomedical engineering (BME) is the engineering discipline that has the highest percentage of female degree recipients and tenure/tenure-track teaching faculty. Thus there is a great potential for female role models, mentors and mentees in BME. Recently, I have a developed a mentoring program for women at the joint graduate biomedical engineering program of University of memphis (UM) and University of Tennessee (UT). Currently we are following the book "Giving Much/Gaining More: Mentoring for Success" by Dr. Wadsworth for our meetings and activities to provide a support and discussion group, and environment to women in their transition time of the BME graduate studies. Our future goal is to expand mentoring to female students in our engineering school.

An interactive electrophysiology training resource was developed for computational modeling of cellular bioelectric activity. Electrophysiology research projects were integrated into education and training by this resource called iCell which is also known as the interactive cell modeling tool (http://***/icell). iCell is used as a simulation-based teaching and learning tool for electrophysiology. The site consists of JAVA models of various cardiac cells and neurons, and provides simulation data of their bioelectric activities at single cell level. Each JAVA-based model is menu-driven and presents options to change model parameters or conditions, run and view simulation results. iCell has been used as a teaching and learning tool for seven graduate courses at the joint biomedical engineering program of University of memphis and University of Tennessee. Scientists from the fields of biosciences, engineering, life sciences and medicine in 17 different countries have also tested and utilized iCell as a simulation-based teaching, learning and collaboration environment.
