Mentoring is significant personal and professional assistance given by a more experienced person to a less experienced person during a time of transition. Transitions from high school to university, from university to graduate school are difficult. Organizing and administering mentoring programs in schools or in professional societies provide good recruitment and retention of female students in engineering. biomedical engineering (BME) is the engineering discipline that has the highest percentage of female degree recipients and tenure/tenure-track teaching faculty as seen presented in "ASEE Profiles of engineering and engineering Technology Colleges, 2001 Education. engineering Education by the Numbers". Thus there is a great potential for female role models, mentors and mentees in BME. Recently, I have a developed a mentoring program for women at the joint Graduate biomedical engineering program of University of memphis (UM) and University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UT). Currently our program focuses on peer-mentoring and community building. We follow the book "Giving Much/Gaining More: Mentoring for Success" by Dr. Wadsworth for our meetings and activities to provide a support and discussion group, and environment to women in their transition time of the BME graduate studies. Our future goal is to expand our mentoring program to female students in our engineering school since we believe that the women in BME are excellent role models, mentors and mentees to women in other engineering disciplines.

An interactive web resource, iCell (http://***/icell/), was developed as a simulation-based teaching and learning tool for electrophysiology. The web site integrates education and research, and provides JAVA applets that represent models of various cardiac cells and neurons, and simulation data of their bioelectric activities at cellular level. Each JAVA-based model allows the user to go through menu options to change model parameters, run and view simulation results. The site also hosts a glossary section for the scientific terms. iCell has been used as a teaching and learning tool for five graduate courses at the joint biomedical engineering program of University of memphis and University of Tennessee. This modeling tool has been also used as a collaboration site among our colleagues interested in simulations of cell membrane activities. Scientists from the fields of biosciences, engineering, life sciences and medical sciences in Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, England, Germany, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Spain, Turkey and USA have tested and utilized iCell as a simulation-based teaching, learning and collaboration environment. The cellular modeling resource, iCell, provides us with a platform-independent, interactive and user-friendly teaching and learning tool, and also a collaboration environment for electrophysiology to be shared over the Internet.

We have developed a computational model for the rat cardiac ventricular cell by using electrophysiology data. Our control model (Pandit et al,. 2001) represents the bioelectric activity in the left ventricular cells in adult male rats. We have formulated the differences in the membrane properties within the left ventricle to simulate the action potential variations of the endocardial and epicardial cells. We also built a right ventricular cell model from our control model (the left ventricular cell model) to investigate ionic mechanisms in diabetic rats (Pandit et al., 2003). Our right ventricular cell model was also the template for us to develop a mouse ventricular cell model by utilizing experimental data. The simulation studies in our models of the rat and mouse ventricular cells conclude that (1) the action potential variations in the left and right ventricles of the normal, diabetic, aged or spontaneously hypertensive rats is mainly due to differences in the 4AP sensitive, Ca/sup 2+/ independent transient outward K/sup +/ current (I/sub t/) current, and (2) the presence of the 4AP sensitive, slowly inactivating, delayed rectifier K/sup +/ current (I/sub Kslow/) in mouse is one of the main factors contributing to the faster rate of repolarization seen in mouse compared to rats.

An interactive cell modeling resource, iCell, was developed for computational modeling of cellular bioelectric activity. Electrophysiology research projects were integrated into education and training at the iCell web site (http://***/icell). iCell is used as a simulation-based teaching and learning tool for electrophysiology. The site consists of JAVA applets representing models of various cardiac cells and neurons, and provides simulation data of their bioelectric activities at single cell level. Each JAVA-based model allows the user to go through menu options to change model parameters or conditions, run and view simulation results. iCell has been used as a teaching and learning tool for four graduate courses at the joint biomedical engineering program of University of memphis and University of Tennessee. Scientists from the fields of biosciences, engineering, life sciences and medicine in 13 different countries have also tested and utilized iCell as a simulation-based teaching, learning and collaboration environment.

To understand the effects of in utero cocaine exposure on the developing fetus, we studied the heart rate and the heart rate variability (HRV) in near and full term cocaine-exposed infants during quiet sleep supine and following orthostatic stress. 21 cocaine-exposed and 23 control infants were studied within 120 hours of birth. 30-minute segments of the electrocardiogram (ECG) were recorded with the infant, horizontal followed by the infant in a 25/spl deg/ head-up tilt. The cocaine-exposed group, as compared with the control group, had a trend toward an increase in heart rate in the horizontal position and a significant increase in heart rate following the tilt. The frequency components of the heart rate were lower in the horizontal position and increased following the orthostatic stress. These results are consistent with the known pharmacological actions of cocaine and demonstrate the possible adverse neonatal effects of cocaine abuse during pregnancy.

Experimental data on the axial motion of particles in blood suspension flows were obtained as statistical histories and considered within mathematical methods developed for relativistic mechanics. The power of the methods to represent paths (curves) through parameterization in multiple ways was exploited to link the changing energy along the flow and the obvious measure, the net axial displacement of the tracer particles. The common initial condition of members of the ensembles was rationalized in physical terms as a base from which changes of energy and momentum were determined. These quantities were related to the residence time of the tracers in chosen axial regions that were measured in energy change and displacement.
