A Micro-ElectroMechanical computer-Aided Design (MEMCAD) system is being developed to make it possible for microsensor designers to perform realistic simulations easily and quickly. Carefully selected commercial software packages have been linked with specialized databases and numerical programs to allow a designer to enter a three-dimensional microsensor geometry and quickly perform both mechanical and electrical analysis. The authors briefly describe the system and demonstrate its effectiveness by accurately calculating the capacitance versus pressure (or force) curve for a square diaphragm deformed by a differential pressure and for a rectangular beam deflected by a centrally applied force. The MEMCAD system has successfully implemented the following: querying a material property database for material property insertion, combining a 3-D solid model with displacement information from the finite element method, and interfacing the 3-D solid model format with a capacitance extraction program.< >

The problem of using the idle cycles of a number of high-performance workstations, interconnected by a high-speed network, for solving computationally intensive tasks is discussed. The classes of distributed applications examined require some form of synchronization among the sub-tasks, hence the need for coscheduling to guarantee that sub-tasks start at the same time and execute at the same pace on a group of workstations. A model of the system that allows the definition of an objective function to be maximized is presented. Then a quadratic time and linear space algorithm is derived for computing the optimal coscheduling.< >

This work concerns the problem of broadcasting a large message efficiently when each processor has partial prior knowledge about the contents of the broadcast message. The partial information held by the processors might be out of date or otherwise erroneous, and consequently, different processors may hold conflicting information. Tight bounds are established for broadcast under such conditions, and applications of the broadcast protocol to other distributed computing problems are discussed. © 1991 ACM.

This system uses an architecture which allows the diagnostic knowledge for a particular protocol to be separate from the reasoning mechanism. The protocol-specific knowledge is held in a structure referred to as the protocol diagnostic model (PDM), and consists of a set of associations between patterns and actions. A diagnosis of a network failure can be made by recognizing certain symptoms from observed protocol events. These symptoms are detected by matching representations of the temporal relationships between observed events against the patterns in the PDM.< >

Two polyimide-based capacitive humidity sensors were calibrated in Shell Diala A transformer oil and 10 cSt silicone oil at 35, 50, and 70 degrees C. The moisture content of the oils was found to be a linear function of the output voltage with the slope increasing with temperature. Thus, the sensitivity of the sensors to changes in the absolute moisture content of the oils was found to decrease with increasing temperature. For transformer oil the sensitivity changed from 30 mV/p.p.m. at 35 degrees C to 9 mV/p.p.m. at 70 degrees C; for silicone oil the sensitivity changed from 10 mV/p.p.m. at 35 degrees C to 4 mV/p.p.m. at 70 degrees C. Normalization of the absolute moisture content to the saturation level of moisture in the oil for all three calibration temperatures and both oils demonstrated that the sensors respond to the relative saturation of moisture in the oil. The saturation level of moisture in the oils was measured for the three calibration temperatures and could be expressed in Arrhenius form with an activation energy of 0.317 eV for transformer oil and 0.231 eV for silicone oil.< >

Input impedance, current distribution, and radiation pattern for a small broadband flare antenna are numerically analyzed by an improved finite-difference-time-domain (FD-TD) method. This method is best suited for treating the curvilinear metal boundaries. The selected small flare antennas with appropriate shapes and a size of about 9 cm show a good broadband performance. The results also show that the input impedance is between 150-450 Omega in a wide-frequency range, and that the radiation patterns are similar for the frequencies in the 5-12 GHz range.< >

A model is developed for volume charge accumulation in recirculatory flow between a charge source and several charge relaxation regions. According to the model, large volume charge densities result if the residence time in the relaxation volumes is small compared to the oil dielectric relaxation time. Under these conditions, charge can accumulate in the oil with each pass through the flow loop, until charge leakage just balances charge generation. To stimulate the volume charge accumulation in a transformer, a flow loop experiment was developed in which transformer oil was circulated at volume flow rates of 2-20 GPM between a 55-gallon reservoir and a paper cellulose filter. The charge density entering and exiting the filter was simultaneously measured using absolute charge sensors. Bypassing the reservoir resulted in increased volume charge densities, in agreement with the model. It is concluded that charge densities can be enhanced by recirculated flow if the charge is not allowed to significantly relax before re-entering a paper filter charge source.< >

When solving open-region scattering problems via the finite-element method, the infinite region exterior to the scatterer must be truncated with an artificial boundary in order to limit the number of unknowns. An approach that can be used to truncate the infinite region in a finite-element analysis is proposed which involves an artificial conducting boundary (either electric or magnetic). As can be expected, this boundary will cause nonphysical reflections of the scattered field; however, these can be minimized by coating the inner face of the boundary with a layer or several layers of fictitious dielectric whose thickness and constitutive parameters can be so chosen that it absorbs the field over a wide range of incidence angles. Based on the formulation presented, a simple finite-element program was written using a banded matrix algorithm with a variable bandwidth storage scheme. Numerical results are presented.< >

Basic principles of radar polarimetry are introduced. The target characteristic polarization state theory is developed first for the coherent case using the three-step, the basis transformation, and the power (Mueller) matrix optimization procedures. Kennaugh's and Huyen's theories of radar target polarimetry are verified for the monostatic reciprocal case. It is shown that there exist in total five unique pairs of characteristic polarization states for the symmetric scattering matrix, of which two pairs, the cross-polarization null and the copolarization max pairs, are identical, whereas the cross-pol max and the cross-pol saddlepoint pairs are distinct. The fifth pair, the co-pol null pair, lies in the plane spanned by the co-pol max/cross-pol null and the cross-pol max pairs, which determines the target characteristic circle on the polarization sphere reestablishing Huynen's polarization fork concept. The theory is verified by an example in which the co-polarized and cross-polarized power density plots are presented next to the polarization fork.< >

An analysis of the operation of a neural-type cell (NTC) is presented. The operation of an NTC is divided into several different regions depending on operation conditions of the transistors in the NTC, and analytical equations for important design variables are derived for each region. With these equations it is possible for one to predict and design a rise time, a fall time, and amplitude of the NTC pulses. The results will help in the engineering design of pulse coded neural-type networks.< >
