An environment for SPICE called NECTAR has been developed which overcomes convergence and user-interface problems with SPICE by simulating the actions taken by an expert. NECTAR recognizes patterns which cause nonconvergence and provides ways to sidestep the problem. It identifies errors in the SPICE input file and automatically corrects them. It can be used as a circuit-design aid and improves the user interface for SPICE simulations. NECTAR derives its power from knowledge acquired from expert SPICE users and circuit designers.< >

The authors develop, implement, and test efficient computer methods for reconstructing the permittivity profile of a diffraction limited tomographic imaging system. The methods are designed to correct for weak diffraction and depolarization effects in electromagnetic imaging. Increased media penetration using diffraction methods compensates for the inherent loss of image resolution, as compared with projection tomographic methods. The primary goal is to gain further knowledge about vector inverse scattering in inhomogeneous media and its computational feasibility.< >

Two basic approaches have been developed: dynamic moving quadratic curve fitting and weighted least mean square error. A decentralized adaptive control is proposed to stabilize and track the nonlinear interconnected subsystems with unknown parameters. The adaptation of the controller gain is derived by using model reference adaptive control theory based on Lyapunov's direct method. The adaptive gains consist of sigma , proportional, and integral combination of the measured and reference values of the corresponding subsystem. The proposed control is applied to the joint control of a two-link robot manipulator, and the performance in computer simulation corresponds with what is expected in theoretical development.< >

A circuit aging simulator (CAS) has been developed as part of the BSIM (Berkeley Short-channel Igfet Model) family to predict the effects of hot-electron degradation on MOS circuit behavior. Using the SPICE2 of SPICE 3 circuit simulator in a UNIX environment, CAS simulates circuit behavior at a user-specified future time using fresh and DC prestressed BSIM parameter process files. CAS is configured in a pre- and postprocessor configuration, so that no modifications to the SPICE code are necessary. Iterative simulation to take into account ongoing degradation can also be done through an accompanying UNIX shell scrip program.< >

In this paper the kinetics of initial nitridation of thermal oxides is studied by using rapid thermal nitridation of thin oxides. FTIR and AES were used to investigate the chemical properties of nitrided oxide films. The amount of the nitrogenincorporated in and the oxygen escaped from 100Å oxides has been characterized quantitatively as a function of RTN conditions. Results show that RTN at 1100° for 120s incorporates about 85% and 12% of the maximum nitrogen concentration value at oxide surface and bulk, respectively. The nitrogen pile up peak at interface can be seen after RTN at 1100°C with the time as short as 5 s. Study of the effects of the nitridation temperature and the original oxide film thickness indicates that the reaction species has permeated through oxides before effective replacement reaction takes place. The diffusion coefficient of the permeating species is estimated of the value larger than 40−13cm2/s.

The paper presents a frequency-domain estimator which can identify both a nominal model of a plant as well as a frequency-domain bounding function on the modeling error associated with this nominal model. This estimator, which we call a robust estimator, can be used in conjunction with a robust control-law redesign algorithm to form a robust adaptive controller.
