This paper describes the design, fabrication and performance of 30GHz and 60GHz single balanced microstrip diode mixers. The matching networks for these circuits were designed using a mixer analysis program. The measured conversion loss was better than 5.5dB across a 2GHz IF bandwidth at Ka Band and better than 7.7dB over a 4GHz IF bandwidth at V Band. The circuit sizes and the high yield of the processing are consistent with low cost production.

In this paper, we present algorithms and experimental results for an automated layout synthesis procedure that is used in a high-level silicon compiler. The techniques consist of a unique approach to generalized cell synthesis, together with a novel solution of the placement and routing problem. Our algorithms take advantage of a larger space of possible solutions than is available in conventional, fixed-cell approaches to achieve compact and efficient ***, our techniques for cell synthesis are presented. Then, we describe our placement algorithm, in which the locations of the cells are determined by signal-flow considerations. Next, our pin permutation procedure is described. These permutations are not limited to the relatively few cases of logically equivalent pins, but rather, can exploit a much larger set of transformations involving the re-arrangement of the inner structure of the cells themselves. Finally, our techniques for both global and channel routing are discussed. Experimental results for a complete chip layout are included.

A physical and electrical evaluation of the feasibility of planarization by means of composite films has been carried out. The use of even a very thin spin-on film underneath a conventional LP1CVD PSG oxide Film significantly improves the final topography. The electrical properties of the undoped PSG film are consistent with use in CMOS VLSI technologies.

Two approaches to preparing oriented crystalline films on amorphous substrates are reviewed briefly: zone-melting recrystallization (ZMR) and surface-energy-driven grain growth (SEDGG). In both approaches patterning can be employed either to establish orientation or to control the location of defects. ZMR has been highly successful for the growth of Si films on oxidized Si substrates, but its applicability is limited by the high temperatures required. SEDGG has been investigated as a potentially universal, low temperature approach. It has been demonstrated in Si, Ge, and Au. Surface gratings favor the growth of grains with a specific in-plane orientation. In order for SEDGG to be of broad practical value, the mobility of semiconductor grain boundaries must be increased substantially. Mobility enhancement has been achieved via doping and ion bombardment.
