Automatic search for photoacoustic marker using automated transrectal ultrasound

Real-time transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) image guidance during robot-assisted laparoscopic radical prostatectomy has the potential to enhance surgery outcomes. Whether conventional or photoacoustic TRUS is used, the robotic system and the TRUS must be registered to each other. Accurate registration can be performed using photoacoustic (PA markers). However, this requires a manual search by an assistant [IEEE Robot. Autom. Lett 8, 1287 (2023).]. This paper introduces the first automatic search for PA markers using a transrectal ultrasound robot. This effectively reduces the challenges associated with the da Vinci-TRUS registration. This paper investigated the performance of three search algorithms in simulation and experiment: Weighted Average (WA), Golden Section Search (GSS), and Ternary Search (TS). For validation, a surgical prostate scenario was mimicked and various ex vivo tissues were tested. As a result, the WA algorithm can achieve 0.53°±0.30° average error after 9 data acquisitions, while the TS and GSS algorithm can achieve 0.29◦±0.31◦ and 0.48°±0.32° average errors after 28 data acquisitions. © 2023 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

In this paper, we have designed and experimentally characterized a hybrid light emitting diode (LED) and laser diode (LD) based underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) link, which can be suitable for providing high-speed optical connectivity between onshore and submerged systems. An LED-based system is efficient for short-range communication whereas an LD-based system is for long distances. In this paper, we have experimentally demonstrated the establishment of a hybrid LED-LD UOWC link at a data rate of 10 Mbps over a 2.5 m water channel using a return to zero on-off keying (RZ-OOK) modulation scheme using an FPGA-based transmitter and receiver. We have also used offline data processing to quantify the bit error rate (BER) performance as a function of received optical power for tap water and turbid water channels. For the tap water channel, we have achieved a BER as low as 3.5 ×10-6 at - 35.1 dBm received optical power, whereas for turbid water the achieved BER is 1.8 × 10-5 at -31. 6 dBm of received optical power in absence of air bubble. In turbid water (and tap water) channel in presence of air bubbles the minimum achievable BER is around 3 × 10-4 (3 × 10-4) for -31.5 dBm (-35.5 dBm) of received power. © 2023 IEEE.

Collaborative machine learning involves training models on data from multiple parties but must incentivize their participation. Existing data valuation methods fairly value and reward each party based on shared data or model parameters but neglect the privacy risks involved. To address this, we introduce differential privacy (DP) as an incentive. Each party can select its required DP guarantee and perturb its sufficient statistic (SS) accordingly. The mediator values the perturbed SS by the Bayesian surprise it elicits about the model parameters. As our valuation function enforces a privacy-valuation trade-off, parties are deterred from selecting excessive DP guarantees that reduce the utility of the grand coalition's model. Finally, the mediator rewards each party with different posterior samples of the model parameters. Such rewards still satisfy existing incentives like fairness but additionally preserve DP and a high similarity to the grand coalition's posterior. We empirically demonstrate the effectiveness and practicality of our approach on synthetic and real-world datasets. © 2023 Neural information processing systems foundation. All rights reserved.

In this paper, the objective for a group of unmanned aerial vehicle agents (UAVs) to achieve three dimensional circumnavigation around a moving target which information is made available to all agents in the group. The cooperative circumnavigation is to drive the UAVs to orbit around the target according to a given elliptical desired spatial formation. Due to the thrust limitation needed to fly the drone, existing cyclic pursuit algorithms cannot be extended directly to achieve this objective. Thus the proposed algorithm is worked out to take into account this constraint in order to achieve such objective. The drones are subject to unknown external disturbance, also the masses of those agent drones are assumed to be unknown. Furthermore, the communication cost can be decreased and the Zeno behavior is shown to be excluded. The proposed controller guarantees the bounded control effort irrespective of the external disturbance and model uncertainties of the drone. Numerical simulations are conducted to illustrate the efficacy of the approach. © 2023 IEEE.

The recent proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the power network along with the retirement of conventional generators has made it challenging to regulate system frequency. This paper presents a centralized control framework to leverage the potential of DERs in the distribution network to provide secondary frequency control services to the grid. The proposed framework is based on network volt-watt sensitivity analysis and takes into account DER operational and network-imposed constraints to allocate the automatic generation control (AGC) request among the aggregated units. The proposed framework was implemented on the IEEE 8,500-node test feeder and the results were validated against a standard linear programming-based scheme. Numerical results indicate that the proposed framework can successfully utilize the available power production headroom of the network to meet the AGC request while maintaining nodal voltages within acceptable limits. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper presents novel sub-harmonic synchronous machines having series or parallel permanent magnet structures on rotors for better performance in terms of greater torque density. The stator of the machines has two sets of three-phase winding, where the additional winding is used to generate sub-harmonic magnetomotive force components for brushless operation. Similar to the stator, the rotor of them uses an additional winding to induce that sub-harmonic component. Rotor also uses a permanent magnet to improve machine performance in series or parallel hybrid structures having conventional or consequent pole permanent magnet structures. In this paper, 4 different rotors, 3 having hybrid excitation, are used and their performance is compared. To validate the performance, a 2D finite element analysis of 8 poles and 48 slots of sub-harmonic synchronous machines is carried out with different rotors. Finally, the wide-speed operation of the proposed machine is discussed. © 2023 IEEE.

We present Model Predictive Planning (MPP), a trajectory planner for low-agility vehicles such as a fixed-wing aircraft to navigate obstacle-laden environments. MPP consists of (1) a multi-path planning procedure that identifies candidate paths, (2) a raytracing procedure that generates linear constraints around these paths to enforce obstacle avoidance, and (3) a convex quadratic program that finds a feasible trajectory within these constraints if one exists. Low-agility aircraft cannot track arbitrary paths, so refining a given path into a trajectory that respects the vehicle's limited maneuverability and avoids obstacles often leads to an infeasible optimization problem. The critical feature of MPP is that it efficiently considers multiple candidate paths during the refinement process, thereby greatly increasing the chance of finding a feasible and trackable trajectory. We demonstrate the effectiveness of MPP on a longitudinal aircraft model. © 2024 IEEE.

We report a novel wearable sensor with multi-utility functionality, capable of monitoring joint kinematics and imaging underlying tissue abnormalities via the same interface. The sensor consists of loops wrapped around the limb, one placed above and one placed below the joint. At low frequencies, magnetic coupling dominates and joint motion can be monitored while being insensitive to tissue properties;at high frequencies, loops act as electromagnetic radiators that are affected by tissues, and can, thus, monitor tissue abnormalities. The sensor can be seamlessly embedded into a garment, bringing forward unprecedented opportunities for numerous applications in healthcare, sports, space, and beyond. © 2022 URSI.

This work introduces EffiSegNet, a novel segmentation framework leveraging transfer learning with a pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier as its backbone. Deviating from traditional architectures with a symmetric U-shape, EffiSegNet simplifies the decoder and utilizes full-scale feature fusion to minimize computational cost and the number of parameters. We evaluated our model on the gastrointestinal polyp segmentation task using the publicly available Kvasir-SEG dataset, achieving state-of-the-art results. Specifically, the EffiSegNet-B4 network variant achieved an F 1 score of 0.9552, mean Dice (mDice) 0.9483, mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) 0.9056, Precision 0.9679, and Recall 0.9429 with a pre-trained backbone - to the best of our knowledge, the highest reported scores in the literature for this dataset. Additional training from scratch also demonstrated exceptional performance compared to previous work, achieving an F 1 score of 0.9286, mDice 0.9207, mIoU 0.8668, Precision 0.9311 and Recall 0.9262. These results underscore the importance of a well-designed encoder in image segmentation networks and the effectiveness of transfer learning approaches. © 2024 IEEE.

Key challenges in developing underwater acoustic localization methods are related to the combined effects of high reverberation in intricate environments. To address such challenges, recent studies have shown that with a properly designed architecture, neural networks can lead to unprecedented localization capabilities and enhanced accuracy. However, the robustness of such methods to environmental mismatch is typically hard to characterize, and is usually assessed only empirically. In this work, we consider the recently proposed data-driven method [18] based on a deep convolutional neural network, and demonstrate that it can learn to localize in complex and mismatched environments. To explain this robustness, we provide an upper bound on the localization mean squared error (MSE) in the "true"environment, in terms of the MSE in a "presumed"environment and an additional penalty term related to the environmental discrepancy. Our theoretical results are corroborated via simulation results in a rich, highly reverberant, and mismatch channel. © 2023 IEEE.
