The recent advancements in the Internet of Video Things (IoVT) and Edge-Fog-Cloud Computing paradigm make smart public safety surveillance (SPSS) a realistic solution for an effective public safety service in smart cities. Typically, a fully functional SPSS system requires multiple sensory inputs for situational awareness (SAW). As an essential component in the context of highly complex, dynamic, and heterogeneous smart city operations, SPSS is expected to be environment-resilient. Personal safety is among the top concerns of the residents in smart cities, and correspondingly pedestrian detectors are critical. Contemporary pedestrian detectors use optical cameras, whose accuracy is diminished in low-light environments, and they are rendered ineffective when obstacles block the direct line of sight to the camera. Complementary imaging sensors such as infrared have shown promise. This paper presents a full-spectrum, environment-resilient surveillance platform as an ultimate solution, which consists of multiple imaging units to cover a wide sensing spectrum. The initial hybrid pedestrian detection (HYPE) scheme is based on the fusion of data obtained from an IoVT network equipped with optical and thermal cameras. We demonstrate that training the YOLOv5 object detection model on a dataset of infrared images improves its accuracy in the detection of humans present in thermal surveillance images. A 41% decrease in objectness loss is achieved after transfer learning is performed. © 2023 International Society of Information Fusion.

It is currently challenging to accomplish high data processing with low latency, because large-scale, persistent, high-bandwidth connection is often required to gather huge volumes of data from platforms and sensors operating at the edge to allow processing in the cloud. Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices deployment in remote locations for environmental monitoring with machine learning (ML) techniques, Internetof-Medical Things, IoT-based precision agriculture, all can operate with limited battery, while robustness and reliability is required. Machine learning algorithms employed in IoT devices improves efficiency as well as decision-making with real-time situational awareness and the capacity to react swiftly and accurately to impending actions or threats. This work presents a methodology to develop AI-based applications for Internet-ofThings environments by using the machine learning core inside the STM Mems Sensor LSM6DSOX and the toolchain Unico, Unicleo and WEKA. In particular, we demonstrate an efficient implementation that combines the target IoT platform's compilation toolchain and platform-specific resource limitations into the model selection process, to leverage embedded hardware machine learning for automated monitoring of the detection of a falling object.

Object detection using deep learning approach is being utilized for many fields such as autonomous driving, traffic analysis, etc. However, deep learning approach shows some fundamental limitations related to collecting datasets or explainabilty caused by its unclearness of the process for reaching a specific conclusion. This paper proposes DORAC which refers to Dynamic-Objects Removal And Clustering for object detection and does not use any deep neural networks. DORAC can be operated at videos captured by fixed camera. Frames of a video are averaged for removing dynamic objects. Then, the confidence map obtained from subtraction between video frame and averaged image is processed by thresholding and clustering. Experiments show that proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art deep learning models trained with remarkable dataset by over 5% for our industry videos. In addition to metrics related to accuracy, frame rate of the method proposed in this paper is also 0.5 frames faster than YOLOv9-tiny model in CPU, averagely.

This paper presents a compact planar ultrawideband (UWB) band-pass filter (BPF). Initially, it employs a compact BPF with a reversible notched band to reject unwanted signals. The second phase entails determining and establishing the conventional microstrip feed’s input impedance at a fixed value of 50 ohms. Then, to eliminate the unwanted signal, a triangleshaped patch is etched from an L-shaped parallel linked transmission line. The bottom part of the BPF receives grounding. The BPF is designed, simulated, and fabricated in the laboratory. The measured fractional impedance bandwidth of 4.42 and 25.83%, minimum insertion loss of 1.40 and 0.32 dB, and minimum total loss of 15 and 8%, along with flat group delay at first and second resonant frequencies, respectively. Notably, BPF exhibits minimal loss, exceptionally low distortion, and acceptable speed. It demonstrates that the simulation and experimental results support the conclusions. The proposed BPF is suitable for S/C-band applications.

Pneumonia is an infectious disease of the lungs, caused by viruses, bacteria or fungi. Pneumonia is distinguished by acute inflammation of the lung tissue, causing the consolidation of the terminal bronchioles and alveoli. According to the WHO (the World Health Organization), this disease causes about 4 million deaths. Among the methods of diagnosing pneumonia uses a chest X-ray. This is widely used to visualize pulmonary abnormalities. This work aims at the detection and characterization of pneumonia by the development of computer-assisted diagnosis systems (DAOC). We use deep learning algorithms and chest X-ray images from a pneumonia database to examine the classification of pneumonia. To improve the accuracy, we compare several deep learning models. This research contributes to meeting the growing demand for medical personnel by addressing the global incidence of chest disorders. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper discusses the key experiences from delivering a short-term course on bioelectromagnetics at the SSN College of engineering in India. The registered students were third and fourth-year undergraduates from the chemical engineering and electrical engineering programs. The overall feedback is highly positive, while a chemical engineering student's comments illuminate the potential of bio-electromagnetics to ignite interest in non-electrical engineering students as well. Comparisons with experiences from an earlier, online offering of the course are also reported. Future directions are, finally, discussed in terms of leveraging experiences from other bio-electromagnetics courses taught at other institutions.

In this paper, a circularly polarized (CP) substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW)-based H-plane horn antenna with broader impedance bandwidth and higher peak realized gain (PRG) for armature satellite services (X-band, 8–12 GHz) and broadcast satellite (Ku-band, 12–18 GHz) applications is presented. A tapered microstrip transition is used in the feeding section to obtain the broadband characteristics. In addition, the feeding component of the antenna utilizes three quarter-wavetransformers to enhance impedance matching and widen the bandwidth. To generate the CP, two rows of rectangular slots are etched from both the top and bottom metal surfaces of the design. The antenna is designed, fabricated, and tested. The measured fractional impedance bandwidth of 41.6%, the 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth of 3.8 GHz, the maximum PRG of 6.95 dBic, the maximum radiation efficiency (simulated) of 87 %, and the cross-polarization level below -40 dB have been achieved at the center frequency of 13.2 GHz.

In this paper, a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW)-based H-plane horn antenna with a broader impedance bandwidth and high peak realized gain (PRG) for broadcast satellite (Ku/K band, 12.5-26.5 GHz) and fixed satellite K band, 18-26.5 GHz) services applications is presented. A tapered microstrip transition is used in the feeding section to obtain the broadband characteristics. In addition, the multistrip transition also helped to enhance the fractional impedance bandwidth (FIBW), radiation characteristics and to improve the PRG. This mechanism of bandwidth increase can be explained by applying the coupled resonators theory. The antenna is designed, fabricated, and tested. The measured FIBW of 16.3%, the PRG of 10.56 dBi at the end-fire direction, the maximum radiation efficiency of 88.56%, and the cross-polarization level below - 35 dB have been achieved at the center freqency of 19 GHz.

Characterizing the susceptibility of an IC while it is integrated within a system can be challenging. Characterization is even harder if one wants to know the waveform at the target IC pin when injecting a signal on the pin. In this work, the feasibility of a direct injection probe with a capacitively coupled return and integrated voltage monitor is proposed. This probe is advantageous because it does not need to be soldered to the test device and its ability to provide a measurement of the waveform on the target IC pin during the injection. Methods for reconstructing the pin waveform based on probe measurements are discussed. Initial results indicate that the presented probe is generally insensitive to landing position variations and can accurately provide the waveform at the target IC during an injection. Future work is focused on further validation of the presented probe.

This paper introduces an innovative on-board integrated DC charging approach through partial power processing (PPP) in a traction inverter system. The proposed system, incorporating a series-connected partial power dual-active-bridge (DAB) converter, efficiently regulates the DC link voltage to achieve an optimal bus voltage for traction operation across a wide speed and torque range. Leveraging partial and bidirectional power processing, the battery current during charging is precisely regulated without the need for external DC-DC charging equipment, ensuring seamless integration to a DC hub with different voltage levels. This advanced integration also endows the system with bidirectional power exchange capability to/from the external DC hub, i.e., vehicle-to-DC (V2DC).
