This work presents an optimized exponential function VLSI hardware design by Taylor series expansion. The proposed architecture implements the exponential by approximating the logic design of a 4th-order Taylor series and explores efficient CMOS arithmetic operation strategies. It implements a shift-based divider and explores an efficient 4-2 adder compressor in the adder tree. The proposal with a -7 to 11 input values range shows an output error of around 2% of MRED with a reduced energy consumption of 3.63 pJ/operation for 32-bit output. For a 64-bit output, the energy per operation of the VLSI exponential unit is 14.97pJ/op, being able to process a more comprehensive input range (i.e., -14 to 22) for a negligible mean output error of around 1.7% of MRED. © 2023 IEEE.

This work introduces a machine learning method for indirect test pattern generation in analog and mixed-signal circuits. The proposed method employs a low-cost test generation tool to simulate circuit specifications and parametric measures, incorporating variability via Monte Carlo simulation. Learning models are trained to relate low-cost DC node measurements to circuit specifications, enabling indirect testing. Validation on a 180 nm fully-differential integrated filter achieved R2 scores of 0.76 for DC gain, 0.76 for cutoff frequency, and 0.98 for slew rate. A simulation fault injection campaign using a structural fault model (catastrophic and parametric faults) demonstrated 100% fault coverage with 19 measurements. © 2013 IEEE.

In this work, we fabricated indium gallium zinc oxide (IGTO) metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodetectors (PDs) with different oxygen flow ratios and investigated and discussed their characteristics. 0% PDs show a high responsivity of 25.75 A/W, but their dark current is very high and their switching time is low. 10% PDs exhibit the highest performance. They show a high photo/dark current ratio of 1.05 × 105 with a low dark current of 1.19 × 10−11 A. Their responsivity is 0.12 A/W and their rejection ratio is 9.38 × 105, which is sufficiently high to ensure the accuracy of distinguishing between UV and visible ranges. Their rising time is 206 s and their falling time is 58 s. It was observed that the response time shortened as the oxygen flow ratio was increased. © 2024 M Y U Scientific Publishing Division. AxRSU- : Higher-Order m-Bit Approximate Encoders for Radix- Squarer Units

Approximate computing has emerged as a design alternative to enhance design efficiency by capitalizing on the inherent error resilience observed in numerous applications. Various error-resilient and compute-intensive applications, such as signal, image and video processing, computer vision, and supervised machine learning, necessitate dedicated hardware accelerators for mean squared error estimation during runtime. In these application domains, using efficient arithmetic operators, particularly a squarer unit, represents one of the most effective strategies for low-power design. This work introduces an approximate Radix- $$2^{m}$$ squarer unit, denoted as AxRSU- $$2^{m}$$ . The proposed squarer unit employs m-bit approximate encoders to execute operations on m-bit data concurrently. The AxRSU- $$2^{m}$$ under consideration explores encoders with m equal to 2 (AxRSU-4), 3 (AxRSU-8), and 4 (AxRSU-16). These approximate encoders exhibit low complexity and diminish the necessary partial products operating on m bits simultaneously, thereby substantially enhancing energy efficiency and reducing circuit area in the AxRSU- $$2^{m}$$ . To illustrate the trade-off between error and quality in the AxRSU- $$2^{m}$$ , we apply it to an SSD (sum squared difference) hardware accelerator designed for video processing, with a square-accumulate serving as a case study. Our findings reveal a novel Pareto front, presenting eight optimal AxRSU- $$2^{m}$$ solutions that achieve accuracy levels ranging from 3.76 to 75.53%. These solutions yield energy savings ranging from 46.20 to 95.57% and circuit area reductions ranging from 37.68 to 66.73%.

The thin film of indium gallium tin oxide (IGTO) was deposited by the RF magnetron sputtering system with different oxygen flow ratios, which controls the numbers of defects and free carriers to change the characteristics of thin-film transistors ((TFTs). We determined the subgap density-of-states (DOS) from the transfer characteristics curve by the unified subthreshold coupling factor technique to analyze the response of oxygen-related trap sites within the thin films fabricated under different oxygen flows. We used Python to fit the DOS data with a combination of two exponential forms, inferring that, during the increase in the oxygen flow ratio, acceptor-like oxygen-related trap sites can be gradually compensated. The IGTO TFTs exhibit optimized performance when subjected to annealing at 200 °C for 1 h with a 5% oxygen flow ratio, showing a threshold voltage (Vth) of 1.76 V, a field-effect mobility of 0.355 cm2/V s, an impressive on/off drain current ratio of 1.42 × 106, and a subthreshold swing (SS) of 0.665 V/decade. © The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society 2024.

This paper investigates the impact of approximate subtractors in the hardware architecture of the Sum of Absolute Differences (SAD) computation within the Test Zone Search (TZS) algorithm, commonly used in current video encoders like the Versatile Video Coding (VVC). Four state-of-the-art imprecise subtractors $(AppS, AXSC1, AXSC2, AXSC3)$ were analyzed across various video resolutions to assess their influence on computational effort, energy consumption, and coding efficiency. The results show that subtractors like $AppS_{4}$ and $AXCS1_{4}$ provide significant reductions in energy consumption with minimal impact on video coding quality. These findings are especially relevant for low-power devices and embedded systems, where energy efficiency is critical. The use of imprecise subtractors offers a promising tradeoff between computational efficiency and energy savings, making them a viable solution for high-performance video encoders.

This study investigated the effects and influences of MgO seed layer and morphology on the characteristics of NO2 gas sensors fabricated using the In2O3 nanorod sensing membranes grown by the hydrothermal synthesis method. The morphologies of In(OH)3 nanorods were modified using different MgO seed layers and different precursor solutions of indium chloric tetrahydrate and urea. The In(OH)3 nanorods were converted into In2O3 nanorods in a hydrogen ambience at 300 oC for 10 min. Using the hydrothermal synthesis method with indium chloric tetrahydrate of 65 mM and urea of 1.42 M, the optimal response of the NO2 gas sensors was 219.1 by using the In(OH)3 nanorods grown on 100-nm-thick MgO seed layers sputtered with RF power of 100 W and annealed in oxygen ambience at 500 oC for 2 hours. The response time and recovery time of the resulting NO2 gas sensors were 42 sec and 82 sec, respectively. © 2001-2012 IEEE.

The aggressive scaling of nanometric VLSI technologies increases the integrated circuits susceptibility to radiation, especially to single-event effects. Ordinarily, circuit vulnerability is evaluated through the cross-section metric, which represents the number of errors observed in a given time window, divided by the particle fluence (integral of flux) passing through the circuit in the same time frame. Obtaining the cross-section requires performing an expensive radiation test. Therefore, any way of predicting it, even with a loss in accuracy, is important to allow early design choices to reduce the expected error rate of an electronic circuit intended to be deployed in radiation environments. In this context, this work proposes a methodology framework to evaluate cross-sections of combinational standard cells against radiation-induced errors. The procedure extracts the most sensitive cell areas according to input vectors, indicating the radiation-sensitive charge collection areas. This study suggests different approaches to evaluate the cross-section through physical design characteristics. First, it explores the scenario for low LET particles, identifying the charge collection areas. Subsequently, it considers the heavy ions particle range to estimate the maximum cross-section. Results indicate that cross-section is almost 9.5 times lower for low-energy particles. Literature results suggest that charge collection could arise outside the sensitive plane. This finding could lead to further investigation, and the method proposed can serve as an effective alternative for estimating circuit cross-section.

Circular dichroism(CD)spectroscopy has been widely demonstrated for detecting chiral ***,the determination of chiral mixtures with various concentrations and enantiomeric ratios can be a challenging *** solve this problem,we report an enhanced vibrational circular dichroism(VCD)sensing platform based on plasmonic chiral metamaterials,which presents a 6-magnitude signal enhancement with a selectivity of chiral *** by coupled-mode theory,we leverage both in-plane and out-of-plane symmetry-breaking structures for chiral metamaterial design enabled by a two-step lithography process,which increases the near-field coupling strengths and varies the ratio between absorption and radiation loss,resulting in improved chiral light-matter interaction and enhanced molecular VCD ***,we demonstrate the thin-film sensing process of BSA andβ-lactoglobulin proteins,which contain secondary structures a-helix andβ-sheet and achieve a limit of detection down to zeptomole ***,we also,for the first time,explore the potential of enhanced VCD spectroscopy by demonstrating a selective sensing process of chiral mixtures,where the mixing ratio can be successfully differentiated with our proposed chiral *** findings improve the sensing signal of molecules and expand the extractable information,paving the way toward label-free,compact,small-volume chiral molecule detection for stereochemical and clinical diagnosisapplications.

This research investigates various configurations of the Zynqnet AI Engine to accelerate image classification tasks using the SAT-6 dataset and a 4-layer CNN. The C++ code for the hardware accelerator was translated into RTL using Vivado HLS and integrated with the Zynq Processing System on a ZedBoard Zynq-7000 ARM/FPGA SoC. The AI engine was configured to work with 32 -bit floating point, 8bit fixed point and 8 -bit integer type operations, with different processing elements for parallelizing CNN tasks. Given a 64-bit data memory bus in communication with the accelerator and an 8-bit integer quantization, the variation in the number of processing elements does not result in a significant performance improvement. To address this, 8 values were grouped for reading and writing in 64-bit parallel mode, and different communication architectures were designed to improve data transfer between the accelerator and DDR memory, with optional enablement of L1D and L2 cache. The research analyzes CNN computation performance and FPGA resource usage (LUTs, FFs, BRAMs, DSPs) across configurations, providing insights into the trade-offs in FPGA-based CNN implementations, aiding the development of efficient, high-performance hardware accelerators for Deep Learning applications.
