Digital Multiplexers and Analog multiplexers, through the use of filters and their applications implemented in frequency domain, which requires extensive hardware and is costly have seen substantial amount of research compared to an analog multiplexer in time domain. This Paper Presents design, Simulation, Implementation and Evaluation of a four-to-one analog multiplexer. The analog multiplexer is implemented with the help of four buffers and four transmission gates using 0.35 μm CMOS Technology with optimum linear ranges that covers 60% of total input supply voltage. The analog multiplexer is developed for a biochemical preprocessing unit to multiplex time-varying analog input signals coming from real-time sensor arrays and to connect the selected input to one A/D converter for digital implementation of a bio-inspired intelligent signal detection system or to an analog implemented biochemical detection system.

Bio-inspired systems utilizing neural networks and genetic algorithms are presented in this paper for applications in pattern discovery, identification, classification, and optimum choices for Signal Perception and Processing (SPP), Sample overview applications are presented for: (I) Integrated Intelligent E-Nose systems, and (II) Communication systems dealing with: (1) Connection admission control;(2) Network congestion;(3) Resource management;(4) Priorities and constrains of service control;and (5) Application-specific network adaptation. Bio-inspired systems include: i-Self-Organizing feature Map for discovery, ii- Recurrent Dynamic Neural Networks (NNs), with output neurons feedback and feed forward arrays for noisy signals, iii- Reinforcement NNs for applications with only key features, rather than a known model, iv- Spiking NNs that adjust their synapses subject to changes in the environment, and v- Genetic Algorithms for characterization and optimization. This paper summarizes alternative combinations and structures of novel bio-inspired, VLSIC embedded systems for detection and quantification of bio-chemical agents, and optimum performance of SPP.

system-on-Chip solid state circuits that sense, receive, transmit, and process signals are the sensors, or eyes and ears, of the medical field of the millennium. The goal and design of the system-on-Chip (SOC) program for industry will be to provide affordable, reproducible, and reliable front-end instrumentation, components and subsystems for medical systems. To process/store/analyze the signals acquired from these medical sensors, analog/digital systems are used to provide data fusion and information extraction. These biomedical smart sensors cover the hybrid domains of mixed-technology (electrical, mechanical, optical, thermal, biochemical) and mixed-concept (electrical, control, digital signal processing). These significant domain design differences impose robust design challenges for medical sensor technology.

Advanced microsystems that include, sensors, interface-circuits, and pattern-recognition integrated monolithically or in a hybrid module are needed for civilian, military, and space applications. These include: automotive, medical applications, environmental engineering, and manufacturing automation. ASICs with Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) are considered in this paper, with the objective of recognizing air-borne volatile organic compounds, especially alcohols, ethers, esters, halocarbons, NH/sub 3/, NO/sub 2/, and other warfare agent simulants. The ASIC inputs are connected to the outputs from array-distributed sensors which measure three-features for identifying each of four chemicals. A Specialized Reinforcement Neural Network (RNN) learning approach is chosen for the chemicals classification problem. Hardware implementation of the RNN is presented for 2 /spl mu/m CMOS process, MOSIS chip. design implementation and evaluation are also presented.

In this article, we propose a dynamic recurrent approach to solve uncertain nonlinear algebraic equations. The approach is justified on the basis of net construction that recursively produces minimum neuron state energy which corresponds to the desired solution. Linearization via the Newton-Raphson method is employed in order to make the net converge to an appropriate region in the solution space. Some preliminary experimentation on non-trivial nonlinear examples are included and discussed. Approaches for hardware implementation of the recurrent dynamic neural network are presented. Comparison between a totally digital chip design and a hybrid analog/digital implementation utilizing MOSIS facilities is made. Evaluation and simulations on system, logic, and circuit levels are emphasized.

Hybrid continuous-time and discrete-event system models are developed for applications to intelligent robot and autonomous control systems. Certain general properties, including the interface structure between the discrete event part and the continuous part of hybrid systems, are studied. Petri nets are proposed as the model for the discrete event sub-system (DES), and state equations with a set of binary parameters as the model for the continuous time sub-system (CTS) in a hybrid system. The quantized CTS is formulated in prime event structures, which can also be modeled by a condition/event Petri net. Therefore, a complete hybrid system can be fit into an extended Petri net formalism, which provides a unified framework for hybrid system description. The validity of the proposed model is demonstrated by modeling a two-tank system.

The 2010 Pacific-Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM 2010) was held in Shanghai at Fudan University, during September 21–24, 2010. Since its inauguration in 2000, PCM has been held in various places around the Pacific Rim, namely Sydney (PCM 2000), Beijing (PCM 2001), Hsinchu (PCM 2002), Singapore (PCM 2003), Tokyo (PCM 2004), Jeju (PCM 2005), Zhejiang (PCM 2006), Hong Kong (PCM 2007), Tainan (PCM 2008), and Bangkok (PCM 2009). PCM is a major annual international conference organized as a forum for the dissemination of state-of-the-art technological advances and research results in the fields of theoretical, experimental, and applied multimedia analysis and processing. PCM 2010 featured a comprehensive technical program which included 75 oral and 56 poster presentations selected from 261 submissions from Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, Myanmar, Norway, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, the UK, and the USA. Three distinguished researchers, Prof. Zhi-Hua Zhou from Nanjing University, Dr. Yong Rui from Microsoft, and Dr. Tie-Yan Liu from Microsoft Research Asia delivered three keynote talks to the conference. We are very grateful to the many people who helped to make this conference a s- cess. We would like to especially thank Hong Lu for local organization, Qi Zhang for handling the publication of the proceedings, and Cheng Jin for looking after the c- ference website and publicity.
