As the main contribution, this document provides a consistent discretization of a class of fixed-time stable systems, namely predefined-time stable systems. In the unperturbed case, the proposed approach allows obtaining not only a consistent but exact discretization of the considered class of predefined-time stable systems, whereas in the perturbed case, the consistent discretization preserves the predefined-time stability property. All the results are validated through simulations and compared with the conventional explicit Euler scheme, highlighting the advantages of this proposal. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. EEG microstates: Functional significance and short-term test-retest reliability

EEG microstates, reflecting discrete topographical organization of the EEG signal power, may have clinical relevance;however, their functional significance and test-retest reliability remain unclear. To investigate the functional significance of the canonical EEG microstate classes and their pairwise transitions, and to establish their within-session test-retest reliability, we recorded 36-channel EEGs in 20 healthy volunteers during three eyes-closed conditions: mind-wandering, verbalization (silently repeating the word ‘square’ every 2 s), and visualization (visualizing a square every 2 s). Each condition lasted 3 min and the sequence of three conditions was repeated four times (two runs of two sequence repetitions). The participants' alertness and their sense of effort during the experiment were rated using visual-analogue scales. The EEG data were 2–20 Hz bandpass-filtered and analysed into the four canonical microstate classes: A, B, C, and D. EEG microstate classes C and D were persistently more dominant than classes A and B in all conditions. Of the first-order microstate parameters, average microstate duration was most reliable. The duration of class D microstate was longer during mind-wandering (106.8 ms) than verbalization (102.2 ms) or visualization (99.8 ms), with a concomitantly higher coverage (36.4% vs. 34.7% and 35.2%), but otherwise there was no clear association of the four microstate classes to particular mental states. The test-retest reliability was higher at the beginning of each run, together with higher average alpha power and subjective ratings of alertness. Only the transitions between classes C and D (from C to D in particular) were significantly higher than what would be expected from the respective microstates' occurrences. The transition probabilities, however, did not distinguish between conditions, and their test-retest reliability was overall lower than that of the first-order parameters such as duration and coverage. Recently, cloud radio access network (C-RAN) with caching as a service (CaaS) was proposed to merge the functionalities of communication, computing, and caching (CCC) together. In this paper, we dissect the interactions of CCC in C-RAN with CaaS from two dimensions: physical resource dimension and time dimension. In the physical resource dimension, we identify how to segment the baseband unit (BBU) pool resources (i.e., computation and storage) into different types of virtual machines (VMs). In the time dimension, we address how the long-term resource segmentation in the BBU pool impacts on the short-term transmit beamforming at the remote radio heads. We formulate the problem as a stochastic mixed-integer nonlinear programming (SMINLP) to minimize the system cost, including the server cost, VM cost and wireless transmission cost. After a series of approximation, including sample average approximation, successive convex approximation, and semidefinite relaxation, the SMINLP is approximated as a global consensus problem. The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is utilized to obtain the solution in a parallel fashion. Simulation results verify the convergence of our proposed algorithm, and also confirm that the proposed scheme is more cost-saving than that without considering the integration of CCC. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

Smith-Purcell radiation (SPR) arises when an electron moves above a spatial grating, where fixed momentum compensation constrains the emission wavelength. In contrast, temporal SPR ( t -SPR) utilizes a time grating to leverage temporal periodicity for energy compensation, enabling more flexible radiation control. We introduce a generalized dispersion equation for t -SPR that predicts the interplay between radiation frequency, direction, electron velocity, modulation period, and harmonic orders. t -SPR offers several advantages over conventional SPR: robustness ( t -SPR maintains stable emission intensity without rapid decay as the electron moves away from the time grating), versatility ( t -SPR enables precise control via temporal modulation of period, amplitude, and waveform), and amplified emission (temporal modulation introduces additional energy channels, boosting emission). These features make t -SPR highly promising for advanced applications in on-chip light sources and electron accelerators.

Thermomechanical stress is one of the most important issues in performance and reliability analysis of through silicon via-based 3-D integrated circuits (3-D ICs), where an accurate numerical approach is generally needed to produce stress models and identify weak points in the structure. In this paper, we propose a knowledge-oriented nonuniform (KONU) refinement strategy for 3-D IC stress simulation under the framework of a parallel adaptive finite element method (FEM), and apply it in 3-D IC stress and reliability analysis. Parallel adaptive FEM is promising for solving large-scale problems due to its high accuracy and parallel efficiency. It produces refined meshes based on the a posteriori error analysis, which has the quasi-optimal convergence rate for solving the problem. It has high parallel efficiency, which makes it suitable for handling large and complex structures in 3-D ICs. The KONU refinement strategy developed in this paper can efficiently reduce the number of refinement iterations in parallel adaptive FEM for 3-D IC thermomechanical stress simulation and improves the computational efficiency. It is demonstrated in this paper through several examples that parallel adaptive FEM for thermomechanical stress evaluation can be widely applied in 3-D IC reliability analysis, where accurate stress simulation and modeling is exceptionally important to produce accurate results. © 2018 IEEE.

Despite substantial declines since 2000, lower respiratory infections (LRIs), diarrhoeal diseases, and malaria remain among the leading causes of nonfatal and fatal disease burden for children under 5 years of age (under 5), primarily in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The spatial burden of each of these diseases has been estimated subnationally across SSA, yet no prior analyses have examined the pattern of their combined burden. Here we synthesise subnational estimates of the burden of LRIs, diarrhoea, and malaria in children under-5 from 2000 to 2017 for 43 sub-Saharan countries. Some units faced a relatively equal burden from each of the three diseases, while others had one or two dominant sources of unit-level burden, with no consistent pattern geographically across the entire subcontinent. Using a subnational counterfactual analysis, we show that nearly 300 million DALYs could have been averted since 2000 by raising all units to their national average. Our findings are directly relevant for decision-makers in determining which and targeting where the most appropriate interventions are for increasing child survival. © 2022, The Author(s).

This study introduces a proposed framework encompassing all pivotal sectors a municipality deals with contributing to sustainable development at a local level. This framework is tailor-made to fit into the Greek environment in which municipalities operate. Furthermore, by making use of an appropriate weighting method, considering the challenges of the working environment in Greek municipalities, the study proposes a specific methodology to better understand the policy priorities of municipalities. This information can be used to adjust and better align local policies with national strategies and with the needs and priorities of citizens.
