A design method is proposed for the synthesis of linear, high-order, continuous-time filters using a unique translinear integrator circuit. Unlike previous attempts at incorporating translinear circuits into filter design, the proposed theory makes explicit use of the exponential nature of the bipolar transistor. This technique is based on the operational simulation of LC ladders. A 5th-order Chebyshev filter is designed, simulated and verified experimentally. The filter shows good amplitude response as well as distortion levels comparable to other filtering schemes.

State-of-the-art speech processors in cochlear implants perform channel selection using a spectral maxima strategy. This strategy can lead to confusions when high frequency features are needed to discriminate between sounds. We present in this paper a novel channel selection strategy based upon pattern recognition which allows "smart" channel selections to be made. The proposed strategy is implemented using multi-layer perceptrons trained on a multispeaker labelled speech database. The input to the network are the energy coefficients of N energy channels. The output of the system are the indices of the M selected *** compare the performance of our proposed system to that of spectral maxima strategy, and show that our strategy can produce significantly better results.

Consumers are demanding more and more value for each dollar spent on new electronic equipment. Built-in Self-Test (BIST) of electronic circuits and equipment will help to satiate the demand for self test, self diagnostics, and self repair. This paper discusses some of the engineering and economical tradeoffs which must be addressed when implementing a Mixed Analog-Digital BIST (MADBIST) for an A/D converter on a mixed-signal IC. The overhead required to implement several types of tests is dealt with. The tests include frequency response, signal-to-noise ratio, gain tracking, intermodulation distortion, and harmonic distortion.

A Sixteen Input Maximum/Minimum Analog signal-selector Circuit (SIMMAC) is designed, simulated, and implemented using 2 /spl mu/m p-well (Orbit) CMOS technology. The circuit is useful in recognition of gas types from measurements of thin-film gas-sensor arrays. The output signal of each thin-film gas detector is typically a function of bias voltages, temperature and pressure, film type, frequency, and gas type. Gas sensor arrays provide profiles of resistivity vs. temperature, for a particular PPM, and/or profiles of resistivity vs. pressure at a particular temperature. Since different chemical gas types have peak resistivity values at a certain temperature and a certain pressure, a selector circuit is needed to identify chemical gas components. The SIMMAC design is based on a multiple-input current comparator median circuit. Simulation results gave an accuracy of better than 94% with analog input signal values from 1.6 to 3.6 V. The SIMMAC is suitable for gas detection from a sensor-array of up to 16-elements with known models and negligible signal distortion. Further, it may be used as a post processor to select the winning synapse in an unsupervised neural network for pattern recognition with distorted and unidentified models of gas mixtures.

Automatic feature extraction is a need in many current applications, including the monitoring of industrial tools. Currently available approaches suffer from a number of shortcomings. The Kohonen (1989) self-organizing neural network (SONN) has the potential to act as a feature extractor, but we find it benefits from several modifications. The purpose of these modifications is to cause feature variations to be aligned with the SONN indices so that the indices themselves can be used as measures of the features. The modified SONN is applied to the dull tool monitoring problem, and it is shown that the new algorithm extracts and characterizes useful features of the data.

He obtained his B.A. Sc. and M.A.Sc. degrees in electrical engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Ottawa Ottawa Ontario Canada in 1987 and 1989 respectively. Mr So was a research engineer in the University of Ottawa from January 1989 to October 1991 his research interests included CAD techniques of microwave circuits and numerical methods for electromagnetic wave modelling. He specialized in the development of electromagnetic engineering CAD software and successfully implemented a number of electromagnetic wave simulators based on the two-dimensional and three-dimensional transmission-line matrix methods. From August 1990 to February 1991 he accompanied Professor W. J. R. Hoefer to Rome Italy and Sophia Antiopolas France. During that time he implemented a parallel version of the 3D-TLM simulator for the CM-2 Connection Machine using C-Star and X Windows Library. He is a research engineer and a Ph.D. student at the University of Victoria Victoria British Columbia Canada. He ported the 2D- and 3D-TLM simulators to DECmpp 1200 massively parallel computer using MPL C and C++. He also combined OSA90/hope a commercially available microwave CAD program with a 2D-TLM simulation module for geometry optimization using the Datapipe technique of OSA90/hope. Recently he has developed a distributed client-server computing technique for the TLM method this technique could accelerate the TLM simulation by more than an order of magnitude. Channabasappa Eswarappa received the M.Tech. degree in electrical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur India in 1983 and Ph. This paper describes the implementation of transmission-line matrix (TLM) method algorithms on a massively parallel computer (DECmpp 12000), the technique of distributed computing in the UNIX environment, and the combination of TLM analysis with Prony's method as well as with autoregressive moving average (ARMA) digital signal processing for electromagnetic field modelling. By combining these advanced computation techniques, typical electromagnetic field modelling of microwave structures by TLM analysis can be accelerated by a few orders of magnitude.

In the same year he was presented with a Distinction Award from the Departmnet of Education of Northern Ireland and he is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in the Microwave Research Group at Q.U.B. His principal research area is the electromagnetic field mapping of microwave systems using concurrent programming. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers. Vincent F. Fusco was educated at the Queens's University of Belfast where he obtained the degree of Ph.D. in 1982. He has worked as a research engineer on short-range radar and radio telemetry systems. Currently he is a reader in Microwave Communications in the School of Electrical engineering and Computer Science the Queen's University of Belfast. His current research interests include non-linear microwave circuit simulatino and concurrent programming techniques for electromagnetic field problems with particular emphasis on EMC applications. He has published numerous research papers in these areas. He is the author of the bookMicrowave Circuits Analysis and Computer Aided Design Prentice-Hall 1987. Dr Fusco is a Chartered Electrical Engineer and a Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers.

This paper details the use of a circuit-based EM modelling technique combined with a harmonic balance simulator used to model the radiation from the microstrip bodies comprising an active antenna circuit. The modelling approach adopted for the planar bodies in the circuit will be shown to allow the use of concurrent algorithms in order to reduce overall computational time.

A system has been developed for the classification of intracardiac electrograms (ICEG). The system is comprised of an analogue VLSI neural network, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) and a PC based software training environment. Analogue implementation techniques were chosen to meet the strict power and area requirements of implantable systems. The robustness of the neural network architecture reduces the impact of noise, drift and offsets inherent in analogue approaches. The neural network chip is a 10:6:3 multilayer perceptron with on chip digital weight storage, a bucket brigade input to feed the ICEG to the network and has a winner take all circuit at the output. The chip was implemented in 1.2 μm CMOS and consumes less than 200 nW maximum average power in an area of 2.2×2.2 mm2. The network was trained in loop with the ICD in the signal processing path. Results are presented, demonstrating the advantages of combining neural network and and low power analogue circuit techniques by distinguishing certain dangerous arrhythmia, not currently possible in existing ICDs. © 1994 IEEE.

An analogue VLSI neural network has been designed and tested to perform cardiac morphology classification tasks. Analogue techniques were chosen to meet the strict power and area requirements of an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) system. The robustness of the neural network architecture reduces the impact of noise, drift and offsets inherent in analogue approaches. The network is a 10:6:3 multi-layer perceptron with on chip digital weight storage, a bucket brigade input to feed the Intracardiac Electrogram (ICEG) to the network and has a winner take all circuit at the output. The network was trained in loop and included a commercial ICD in the signal processing path. The system has successfully distinguished arrhythmia for different patients with better than 90% true positive and true negative detections for dangerous rhythms which cannot be detected by present ICDs. The chip was implemented in 1.2um CMOS and consumes less than 200nW maximum average power in an area of 2.2 × 2.2mm2 © NIPS *** rights reserved.

design and implementation of a residue-based adder/subtractor/multiplier arithmetic TinyChip for the moduli set (2/sup n/-1,2/sup n/,2/sup n/+1) is addressed in this paper. The unit realization adopts CMOS semi-custom VLSI design, using Octtools-5.0 with the standard cell MSU2-3 library. The implemented chip has the advantage of reduced delay time and hardware requirements. Thus, it can support real-time one and two dimensional signal processing applications. The design does not have dynamic range limitations due to the absence of memory, therefore, this implementation can be expanded for better reliability. Performance of the system is estimated to be 18 million residue arithmetic operations per second on 2 /spl mu/m process.
