Sensor networks (SNETs) for monitoring spatial phenomena has emerged as an area of significant practical interest. We focus on the important problem of detection of distributed events, sources, or abnormalities that are localized, i.e., only a small number of sensors in the vicinity of the phenomena are in the field of observation. This problem complements the standard decentralized detection problem, where noisy information about an event is measured by the entire network. For localized phenomena the main difficulty arises from the coupling of: a) noisy sensor observations that lead to local false positives/negatives; and b) limited energy, which constrains communication among sensor nodes. Together these difficulties call for reaching a decentralized statistical ordering based on limited collaboration. We are then led to the following fundamental problem: determine the most probable event locations while minimizing communication cost. Our objective in this paper is to characterize the fundamental trade offs between global performance (false alarms and miss rate) and communication cost. We develop a framework to minimize the communication cost subject to worst-case misclassification constraints by making use of the false discovery rate (FDR) concept along with an optimal local measure transformation at each sensor node. The preliminary results show that the FDR concept applied in a sensor networks context leads to significant reduction in the communication cost of the system. A very interesting implication of this work is that the detection performance of a wireless sensor network is comparable to that of a wired network of sensors.

In this paper we present the design of the rule-based framework for the runtime management of high-performance parallel scientific applications. The framework addresses the formulation of application management behaviors as reaction rules, the injection of rules at runtime, their correct, efficient and scalable parallel enforcement, and the detection and resolution of rule conflicts. Unlike rule-based frameworks in business management and security and resource management domains, the presented framework focuses on high-performance parallel scientific applications, which require consistent and efficient management across processors and components. The framework is part of the Accord programming system (Liu et al., 2004)

The inverse magnetostriction effect (IME) is investigated for noise generation, identification and evaluation in shipboard propulsion machinery applications. The finite element (FE) implementation is performed on an example drive motor in two dimensions. The FE implementation results show an increase in the forces acting on the ferromagnetic region causing more deformation in the stationary core. This deformation causes increased vibration and hence an audible noise generation. Wavelet analysis of displacement waveforms at selected points shows the involved frequency range causing noise during the operation. The results confirm the magnetostrictive origin of noise production. The importance of such information can be realized and utilized for the reduction of noise in machinery problems especially in sensitive applications.

A three-stage compression technique that reduces test data volume and test application time for scan-based testing of intellectual property (IP) cores in system-on-chip integrated circuits is presented. In the first stage, referred to as width compression, the concept of scan chain compatibilities is combined with a method that exploits the logic dependencies between scan chains. This leads to a gated fanout decompression structure that uses c input channels to drive m scan chains (c m). Next, static compaction is used to reduce the number of test patterns, a step referred to as height compression. Finally, dictionary-based compression is used to further reduce test data volume. Structural information about the IP cores is not necessary for fault simulation, dynamic compaction, or test generation. By combining the advantages of the gated fan-out structure and dictionary-based compression, the proposed approach significantly reduces the test data volume and testing time with very little hardware overhead for on-chip decompression. Results are presented for the ISCAS-89 benchmarks and for four industrial circuits. © IEE, 2005.

This paper presents the design and characterization of a sample-and-hold circuit based on a novel implementation of the bootstrapped low-voltage analog CMOS switch. The heart of this circuit is a new low-voltage and low-stress CMOS clock voltage doubler. Through the use of a dummy switch, the charge injection induced by the bootstrapped switch is greatly reduced, resulting in improved sample-and-hold accuracy. Experimental results in a 0.18 /spl mu/m digital CMOS process show that a resolution greater than 10 bits can be obtained with a 1.0 V supply voltage. Circuit operation is also possible for supply voltages close to the transistor threshold (e.g., 0.65 V).

Grid environments enable users to share nondedicated resources that lack performance guarantees. This paper describes the design of application-centric middleware components to automatically recover from failures and dynamically adapt to grid environments with changing resource availabilities, improving fault-tolerance and performance. The key components of the application-centric approach are a global per-application execution history and an autonomic component that tracks the performance of a job on a grid resource against predictions based on the application execution history, to guide rescheduling decisions. Performance models of unmodified applications built using their execution history are used to predict failure as well as poor performance. A prototype of the proposed approach, an autonomic virtual application manager (AVAM), has been implemented in the context of the In-VIGO grid environment and its effectiveness has been evaluated for applications that generate CPU-intensive jobs with relatively short execution times (ranging from tens of seconds to less than an hour) on resources with highly variable loads - a workload generated by typical educational usage scenarios of In-VIGO-like grid environments. A memory-based learning algorithm is used to build the performance models for CPU-intensive applications that are used to predict the need for rescheduling. Results show that In-VIGO jobs managed by the AVAM consistently meet their execution deadlines under varying load conditions and gracefully recover from unexpected failures

X-ray luggage inspection systems play an important role in ensuring air travelers’ security. However, the false alarm rate of commercial systems can be as high as 20% due to less than perfect image processing algorithms. In an effort to reduce the false alarm rate, this paper proposes a combinational scheme to fuse, de-noise and enhance dual-energy X-ray images for better object classification and threat detection. The fusion step is based on the wavelet transform. Fused images generally reveal more detail information; however, background noise often gets amplified during the fusion process. This paper applies a backgroundsubtraction- based noise reduction technique which is very efficient in removing background noise from fused X-ray images. The de-noised image is then processed using a new enhancement technique to reconstruct the final image. The final image not only contains complementary information from both source images, but is also background-noise-free and contrastenhanced, therefore easier to segment automatically or be interpreted by screeners, thus reducing the false alarm rate in X-ray luggage inspection.

In this paper, we propose discrete-time and continuous-time consensus update schemes motivated by the discrete-time and continuous-time Kalman filters. With certainty information encoded into each agent, the proposed consensus schemes explicitly account for relative confidence/reliability of information states from each agent in the team. We show mild sufficient conditions under which consensus can be achieved using the proposed consensus schemes in the presence of switching interaction topologies.
