High power three-phase current type pulse width modulation (PWM) rectifiers are becoming increasingly popular as the front-end converter in power electronic systems due to unity displacement power factor control, reduced line current harmonics and tighter electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) regulation. A new control structure utilizing the concept of input-output linearization technique, pole and zero placements using the Butterworth polynomial is designed for current source rectifiers for unity power factor operation and dc voltage regulation. Utilization of the complex-variable form model voltage equations expressed in the synchronous reference frame simplifies the presentation and design of the controllers. Experimental and computer simulation results of a controlled rectifier confirm the validity of the proposed control technique.

A transparent full-order flux observer design methodology and a model reference adaptive mechanism to estimate the rotor speed of an induction motor are set forth which also ensures system stability in all operability regions. The observer gains are chosen using the Butterworth polynomial and the controller gains of the reference model adaptive speed controller are selected using the concept of the D-decomposition. The overall transfer function between the reference rotor and actual speeds is used to finally determine the controller parameters of the speed loop to enhance the system overall stability in the motoring, regenerative and braking modes of drive operations. This paper presents a control methodology for the dc voltage regulation of an induction generator-ac-dc- boost rectifier system in which the copper loss of the generator is minimized. With the aid of an input-output linearization technique, which linearizes and decouples the model equations in the synchronous reference frame, a rotor flux vector control type high performance is achieved. Steady-state analysis provides some insights into the operability regime of the generator. The effectiveness of the control scheme under different load conditions as well as varying rotor speeds has been demonstrated by computer simulations. Some experimental results are included.

This paper investigates the use of a dual stator winding squirrel-cage induction machine for generating dc power using series or parallel connected ac-dc PWM rectifiers. The operating principles and constraints when generating under minimum total copper loss condition are explored using the machine steady-state model considering magnetizing flux saturation effects. Regulation of the dc voltage using concepts of the nonlinear input-output linearization method including the design of the controllers are set forth and confirmed to be effective by computer simulation results. Some experimental waveforms of the generator under load are also included in the paper.

Controllable series line compensation by series flexible ac transmission system (FACTS) devices can provide significant transient stability improvement and effective power oscillation damping. The work presented in this paper gives an overview of control issues of series FACTS devices contributing to stable power system operation when applying suitable controllers with appropriately selected system measurements. Firstly, this paper describes two internal control schemes, which are based on the automatic power flow control mode and line impedance compensation mode, for a switching converter type based series FACTS device. Secondly, it shows that the external (secondary) control can give a solution for overall system optimization by providing well-established supplementary controls and adaptive reference changes to the internal controller. An adaptive Mamdani based fuzzy logic controller has been designed for controlling a static compensator (STATCOM) in a multimachine power system. Such a controller does not need any prior knowledge of the plant to be controlled and can efficiently control a STATCOM during different disturbances in the network. A model free approach using the controller output error is applied for training purposes that adaptively changes the controller output parameters based on a gradient descent method.
