To take unit commitment (UC) decisions under uncertain net load, most studies utilize a stochastic UC (SUC) model that adopts a one-size-fits-all representation of uncertainty. Disregarding contextual information such as weather forecasts and temporal information, these models are typically plagued by a poor out-of-sample performance. To effectively exploit contextual information, in this paper, we formulate a conditional SUC problem that is solved given a covariate observation. The presented problem relies on the true conditional distribution of net load and so cannot be solved in practice. To approximate its solution, we put forward a predictive prescription framework, which leverages a machine learning model to derive weights that are used in solving a reweighted sample average approximation problem. In contrast with existing predictive prescription frameworks, we manipulate the weights that the learning model delivers based on the specific dataset, present a method to select pertinent covariates, and tune the hyperparameters of the framework based on the out-of-sample cost of its policies. We conduct extensive numerical studies, which lay out the relative merits of the framework vis-à-vis various benchmarks.

Toward Value-oriented Renewable Energy Forecasting: An Iterative Learning Approach

Energy forecasting is an essential task in power system operations. Operators usually issue forecasts and use them to schedule energy dispatch in advance. However, forecasting models are typically developed in a way that overlooks the decision value of forecasts. To bridge the gap, we design a value-oriented point forecasting approach for sequential energy dispatch problems with renewable energy sources. At the training phase, we align the training objective with the decision value, i.e., minimizing the overall operating cost. The forecasting model parameter estimation is formulated as a bilevel program. Under mild assumptions, we convert the upper-level objective into an equivalent form using the dual solutions obtained from the lower-level operation problems. In addition, a novel iterative solution strategy is proposed for the newly formulated bilevel program. Under such an iterative scheme, we show that the upper-level objective is locally linear with respect to the forecasting model output and can act as the loss function. Numerical experiments demonstrate that, compared to commonly used forecasts predicting expected realization, forecasts obtained by the proposed approach result in lower operating costs. Dead-time Compensation Method for Bus-clamping Modulated Voltage Source Inverter

Bus-clamping Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) is an effective method to reduce the switching loss in a three-phase voltage source inverter (VSI). In bus-clamping PWM scheme, the phase legs are switched using high frequency PWM signals for two-third of the line cycle, while for the remaining duration of cycle, the pole voltage is clamped to either positive or negative rail of the DC bus. In PWM operation of a half bridge, a dead-time is applied between the gate signals of complementary switches to ensure safe and reliable operation. However, introduction of dead-time leads to poor power quality, increased Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) and variation in actual voltage compared to the intended pole voltage. Moreover, when the bus-clamping technique is used, the PWM has both high frequency switching region and clamped region in a line cycle, and consequently, the undesired effects of dead-time are further aggravated. Therefore, in order to enhance the quality of output voltage, this paper presents a dead-time compensation strategy for a VSI operating with bus-clamping PWM. The proposed method calculates the required compensation term to be added on the modulation signal considering wide range of operating conditions. Additionally, the compensation includes a new strategy for low current conditions near zero-crossing to avoid distortion. The proposed method is verified by simulation and experiments in a three-phase VSI with a switching frequency of 100 kHz and a fundamental frequency of 60Hz. Copyright © 2023, The Authors. In the process of steel plate production, predicting the plate shape is of great significance for producing high-quality and consistently stable plate shapes. This paper presents a model that predicts both the defect types and flatness of the plate, providing theoretical support for setting process parameters in roller quenching production. First, the parameters of the quenching process are analyzed to identify their characteristics. Then, the K-Means clustering algorithm and correlation analysis are employed to process the quenching process parameters. A gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT) model is used to predict the defect types and flatness of the steel plates. Finally, industrial production data is utilized for experimental validation. The obtained experimental results verify the reliability of the proposed method. © 2023 IEEE.

The conception of a control strategy of Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) for providing a high quality of energy, without harmonic accumulations, to the electric network is a real challenge because of the no-linearity of the system and the variable wind speed. In this work, two commands based on two technics have been developed and then tested in order to control the system and the grid powers, respectively. Note that the main purpose of the control laws is to optimize the extraction of the wind energy in a real context and to push the DFIG working properly with the best performance in both static and dynamic modes. Therefore, the dynamic model turbine has been presented in this paper, also the FOC (Field Oriented Control) and the adaptive Backstepping commands are highlighted. Matlab/Simulink simulations analysis, with real parameters of the turbine and real wind profile of Dakhla-Morocco city, confirm the high accuracy of the adaptive Backstepping command, based on the Lyapunov stability technique, with a total harmonic distortion THD ~0.16%. © 2022, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Growing demands in today's industry results in increasingly stringent performance and throughput specifications. For accurate positioning of high-precision motion systems, feedforward control plays a crucial role. Nonetheless, conventional model-based feedforward approaches are no longer sufficient to satisfy the challenging performance requirements. An attractive method for systems with repetitive motion tasks is iterative learning control (ILC) due to its superior performance. However, for systems with non-repetitive motion tasks, ILC is generally not applicable, despite of some recent promising advances. In this paper, we aim to explore the use of deep learning to address the task flexibility constraint of ILC. For this purpose, a novel Task Analogy based Imitation Learning (TAIL)-ILC approach is developed. In order to meet the environmental targets, a large scale integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) has been taking place in power systems. Although those sources contribute to more clean energy and help to reduce the green house gasses emissions, they pose significant challenges to the system's stability due to the intermittency and the high level of dependence to the weather conditions. One of the main challenges is to sustain the system's balance and to guarantee the flexibility adequacy. For this purpose, the need for more comprehensive flexibility studies will increase in the future, since different scenarios should be examined according to various level of RESs, demand and weather conditions. In this work, we propose a novel approach for the unit commitment (UC) algorithm that is implemented in the conventional flexibility studies that aims to reduce the computational time and simultaneously sustain the results' accuracy in a satisfactory level. For this scope, we designed a nested-neural network system of two recurrent neural networks with long short-term memory, which are integrated and aim to reproduce the results of the complex conventional UC algorithm. Results show that the predicted insufficient ramping resource expectation of the two solutions are similar, while the computational time is being reduced by almost 99%. © The Institution of engineering & Technology 2024.

Over the past 70 years, the semiconductor industry has undergone transformative changes,largely driven by the miniaturization of devices and the integration of innovative structures and materials. Two-dimensional(2D) materials like transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDs) and graphene are pivotal in overcoming the limitations of silicon-based technologies, offering innovative approaches in transistor design and functionality, enabling atomic-thin channel transistors and monolithic 3D integration. We review the important progress in the application of 2D materials in future information technology, focusing in particular on microelectronics and optoelectronics. We comprehensively summarize the key advancements across material production, characterization metrology, electronic devices, optoelectronic devices, and heterogeneous integration on silicon. A strategic roadmap and key challenges for the transition of 2D materials from basic research to industrial development are outlined. To facilitate such a transition, key technologies and tools dedicated to 2D materials must be developed to meet industrial standards, and the employment of AI in material growth, characterizations, and circuit design will be essential. It is time for academia to actively engage with industry to drive the next 10 years of 2D material research.

Intelligent driving systems can be used to mitigate congestion through simple actions, thus improving many socioeconomic factors such as commute time and gas costs. However, these systems assume precise control over autonomous vehicle fleets, and are hence limited in practice as they fail to account for uncertainty in human behavior. Piecewise Constant (PC) Policies address these issues by structurally modeling the likeness of human driving to reduce traffic congestion in dense scenarios to provide action advice to be followed by human drivers. However, PC policies assume that all drivers behave similarly. To this end, we develop a co-operative advisory system based on PC policies with a novel driver trait conditioned Personalized Residual Policy, PeRP. PeRP advises drivers to behave in ways that mitigate traffic congestion. We first infer the driver's intrinsic traits on how they follow instructions in an unsupervised manner with a variational autoencoder. Then, a policy conditioned on the inferred trait adapts the action of the PC policy to provide the driver with a personalized recommendation. Our system is trained in simulation with novel driver modeling of instruction adherence. We show that our approach successfully mitigates congestion while adapting to different driver behaviors, with 4 to 22% improvement in average speed over baselines. 1
