Thermal analysis is a crucial and time-consuming step in the optimization design process of high-frequency transformers (HFTs). This paper proposes an improved thermal analysis method based on heat dissipation-conduction two-step simulation, significantly reducing the computation time while ensuring the accuracy of thermal analysis. Simulation results validate the accuracy and of the proposed method and demonstrate that the proposed method saves 82% of computation time for a single thermal analysis case compared to direct CFD. Experimental results further verify the accuracy of the proposed method. An exemplary application of the proposed method in the optimization design of the HFT illustrates a 98% reduction in computation time for thermal analysis during the optimization process.

In this paper, a dual-beam photothermal self-mixing substance trace detection system is proposed. The crystal violet (CV) solution of the sample undergoes a thermal lens effect under the action of pump photoperiod excitation, and the refractive index changes cause the deviation of the probe beam, and the self-mixing interference (SMI) effect occurs when the modulated light returns to the cavity. By combining theoretical and experimental results, the power fluctuation of the SMI signal caused by the thermo-optic effect is linearly related to CV concentration and other parameters. At an excitation power of 24 mW, the detection limit can reach 8.0 × 10−8 mol/L. This method does not require labeling or complex CV pretreatment and has high sensitivity and flexibility, providing a guide for CV characterization in biological, environmental, and pharmaceutical research. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group.

Sensor network localization (SNL) problems require determining the physical coordinates of all sensors in a network. This process relies on the global coordinates of anchors and the available measurements between non-anchor and anchor nodes. Attributed to the intrinsic non-convexity, obtaining a globally optimal solution to SNL is challenging, as well as implementing corresponding algorithms. In this paper, we formulate a non-convex multi-player potential game for a generic SNL problem to investigate the identification condition of the global Nash equilibrium (NE) therein, where the global NE represents the global solution of SNL. We employ canonical duality theory to transform the non-convex game into a complementary dual problem. Then we develop a conjugation-based algorithm to compute the stationary points of the complementary dual problem. On this basis, we show an identification condition of the global NE: the stationary point of the proposed algorithm satisfies a duality relation. Finally, simulation results are provided to validate the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Microgrids are a promising technology to achieve the sustainability goals set by the UN to fight against climate change, create affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, and economic growth by creating a reliable, resilient, green power infrastructure. There are limitations to the benefits that microgrids can provide. To overcome the limitations and bolster the benefits of individual microgrids, they can be interconnected, creating a network of microgrids (NoMs). NoMs have many benefits that individual microgrids cannot accomplish, such as participating in power interchange between connected microgrids and the utility grid. This will increase reliability and resiliency and create economic benefits for the participants of NoMs. Challenges exist in NoMs, including data analysis, communication, and cyber-security to operations and management of the NoMs. This paper will go over the benefits that NoMs can provide and the challenges currently being researched in academia.

Capable of reflecting and refracting the incident signals on both sides simultaneously, the intelligent omnidirectional surface (IOS) has recently been proposed as a promising solution to enhance the capacity of wireless networks. However, the large number of IOS elements brings a heavy burden to the beamforming scheme design, especially for applications that require a fast response to varying environments. In this paper, aiming to maximize the sum rate of an IOS-aided multi-user system via IOS-enabled beamforming design that can rapidly adapt to dynamic channel states and user mobility, we develop a novel meta-critic reinforcement learning framework where a meta-critic network recognizes the environment change and automatically re-trains of the learning model. A stochastic Explore and Reload procedure is tailored to reduce the high-dimensional action space problem. Simulation results show the proposed scheme can converge to a higher sum rate more rapidly compared to the benchmark methods in dynamic settings. The robustness of our scheme against different IOS sizes is also verified.

Optimal Sensor Placement for Full-Set TDOA Localization Accounting for Sensor Location Errors

The positioning accuracy of a signal source is influenced by where the sensors are deployed. Studies in the literature for the optimal sensor placement (OSP) of localization often ignore the presence of sensor position errors. In practice, however, it is impossible to place the sensors precisely at the desired locations. This work designs OSP by accounting for the presence of Gaussian sensor position errors that are independent and identically distributed (IID), with the full set of Time Difference of Arrival measurements corrupted by Gaussian IID noise. The criterion is the A-optimality equal to the trace of the source position Cramer-Rao Bound (CRB). We show that the presence of sensor position errors introduces a multiplication factor to the same criterion for the case without sensor position errors. The latter factor is dependent on the ratio of the sensor position error power to the range difference noise power but independent of the sensor positions, implying that the A-optimality OSP in the presence of sensor position errors is the same as in the absence. To our knowledge, this is the first time such results have been derived. Simulation studies validate the derived OSP, show the minimal OSP performance gap with sensor positioning error and without, and illustrate the better source localization accuracy by OSP. © 1965-2011 IEEE.

Market Design for Capacity Sharing in Networks

We study a market mechanism that sets edge prices to incentivize strategic agents to efficiently share limited network capacity. In this market, agents form coalitions, with each coalition sharing a unit capacity of a selected route and making payments to cover edge prices. Our focus is on the existence and computation of market equilibrium, where challenges arise from the interdependence between coalition formation among strategic agents with heterogeneous preferences and route selection that induces a network flow under integral capacity constraints. To address this interplay between coalition formation and network capacity utilization, we introduce a novel approach based on combinatorial auction theory and network flow theory. We establish sufficient conditions on the network topology and agents’ preferences that guarantee both the existence and polynomial-time computation of a market equilibrium. Additionally, we identify a particular market equilibrium that maximizes utilities for all agents and is equivalent to the classical Vickrey-Clarke-Groves mechanism. Furthermore, we extend our results to multi-period settings and general networks, showing that when the sufficient conditions are not met, an equilibrium may still exist but requires more complex, path-based pricing mechanisms that set differentiated prices based on agents’ preference parameters. We study a class of prediction problems in which relatively few observations have associated responses, but all observations include both standard covariates as well as additional "helper" covariates. While the end goal is to make high-quality predictions using only the standard covariates, helper covariates can be exploited during training to improve prediction. Helper covariates arise in many applications, including forecasting in time series;incorporation of biased or mis-calibrated predictions from foundation models;and sharing information in transfer learning. We propose "prediction aided by surrogate training" (PAST), a class of methods that exploit labeled data to construct a response estimator based on both the standard and helper covariates;and then use the full dataset with pseudo-responses to train a predictor based only on standard covariates. We establish guarantees on the prediction error of this procedure, with the response estimator allowed to be constructed in an arbitrary way, and the final predictor fit by empirical risk minimization over an arbitrary function class. These upper bounds involve the risk associated with the oracle data set (all responses available), plus an overhead that measures the accuracy of the pseudo-responses. This theory characterizes both regimes in which PAST accuracy is comparable to the oracle accuracy, as well as more challenging regimes where it behaves poorly. We demonstrate its empirical performance across a range of applications, including forecasting of societal ills over time with future covariates as helpers;prediction of cardiovascular risk after heart attacks with prescription data as helpers;and diagnosing pneumonia from chest X-rays using machine-generated predictions as helpers. © 2024, CC BY.
