A spontaneous group of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is denoted as a swarm of UAVs (S-UAVs). The UAVs communicate wirelessly and cooperate to accomplish tasks. In crisis scenarios such as flooding or earthquakes, all UAVs are at risk of getting damaged and thus non-functional. A non- functional UAV will result in a disconnected network, especially if that UAV is highly responsible for packet forwarding. S- UAV s are dynamic networks; clustering is one of the most adopted routing schemes in S-UAVs. The clustering scheme groups the UAVs into clusters where each cluster is formed of a cluster head (CH) and cluster members (CMs). Only the CH can handle inter-cluster communication. Due to the crucial role played by the CH, its selection is a continuous field of research. This paper proposes an enhanced clustered weighted scheme with redundancy to ensure end-to-end communication. The proposed scheme is based on a weighted formula for the primary CH, redundant CH, and CMs selection. The weighted formula calculates a cluster index based on the distance, the speed, and the reward index. A new component is added to the reward index which is performance. The redundant CH is selected to automatically replace the primary CH whenever it is damaged. If the redundant CH becomes inoperable, the second redundant CH will take over. Each cluster is formed of n CMs and will have n-2 redundant CHs. The results obtained from the conducted simulation experiments concluded that this promising scheme decreases data loss in a crisis case scenario.

Based on previous work, the ultraviolet HEMT-LED we fabricated by selective epitaxy growth, this paper further performed simulation to explore the most appropriate p-GaN selection size. P-GaN grown by Selective Epitaxy Growth (SEG) can not only be employed as a junction termination to reduce the electric field crowding of the gate of HEMT, but also form an active region by contacting with 2-dimentional electron gas (2DEG). The simulation results provide an effective reference for the design of p-GaN grown by SEG, and further pave the way for the realization of the idea of integration through the selection of growth methods.

A swarm of unmanned aerial vehicles (S-UAVs) consists of UAVs flying together with the target of accomplishing a certain task in a faster and more reliable way as compared to a single UAV. In a crisis scenario, UAVs have been widely used in rescue missions. Clustering is one of the most reliable routing schemes for S-UAVs. The UAVs are grouped into clusters with a cluster-head (CH) and cluster-members (CM). The CH plays a major role in clustering schemes as it handles all inter-cluster communication. In a crisis case, any UAV is at risk of getting non-functional, thus resulting in a disconnected cluster. This paper proposes a new clustering scheme based on K-means and weighted formulas. The K-means protocol is applied to generate pilot phase clusters. Afterward, whenever the metrics of the networks are established, the weighted formula is applied for cluster formation and CH selection. The weighted formula is based on the performance index, the relative movement, and the remaining energy. To ensure end-to-end communication despite CH non-functionality, our proposed protocol selects a redundant CH for every CH. This protocol had been simulated using MATLAB. The results obtained and analyzed towards the end of this paper demonstrate that the proposed scheme is very promising.

The first course of control is under a critical review. Both the teaching material covered and the teaching methods require new considerations. Introducing interactivity in the education process makes the learning more successful and enjoyable. MATLAB provides an effective environment for learning and applying different disciplines. Control101 is a new MATLAB toolbox under development which provides tools for interactive learning of control disciplines. This paper presents the framework for teaching discrete control algorithms applied for processes containing large dead times.

Advanced smart grid applications such as wide-area monitoring, protection, and control (WAMPAC), considerably depend on the synchrophasor measurements gathered from different locations of the power grid. These timestamped measurements are provided by Phasor measurement units (PMUs) and phasor data concentrators (PDCs). These devices are optimally deployed at selected nodes in the grid. PMUs and substation PDCs are routable protocol-based network devices and comply with the IEEE C37.118 standard. Since the PMUs generally communicate through a public wide area network, they are vulnerable to cyberattacks. As a result, these vulnerabilities lead to compromised data integrity, confidentiality, and availability of the smart grid. To cover the cybersecurity vulnerabilities in synchrophasor communication and achieve compatibility between the data transfer based on IEEE C37.118.2 with IEC 61850 standard, IEC 61850-90-5 was released. This part of the standard includes security measures to achieve authentication, integrity, and confidentiality if required. In this work, we implemented publisher and subscriber libraries capable of routing secure GOOSE messages while respecting the time delay specifications set by the IEC61850 standard. The performance of encryption and authentication algorithms was assessed and experimentally verified. In addition, the proposed framework's robustness against cyber-attacks was evaluated.

A drone-based inspection system that can move "freely" around an aircraft to perform the inspection of all the areas of interest in a fast and effective manner can have significant impact in reducing inspection time and cost. However, active thermography inspection using drone is challenging because the drone carrying the optical and thermal cameras is subjected to vibration and undesired motion. Since active thermography relies on the pixel temperature evolution over time, an unstable thermal video from a flying drone can cause error in the output results as any movement between the acquired images will affect the pixel position in the successive frames and thus disrupt the monitoring of the temperature evolution. This paper presents the outcome of experimental runs, where a commercially available drone equipped with both thermal and optical cameras was used to inspect a helicopter Main Rotor Blade (MRB) in a laboratory environment. © 2023 SPIE.

Traditional load shedding schemes can be inadequate in grids with high renewable penetration, leading to unstable events and unnecessary grid islanding. Although for both manual and automatic operating modes load shedding areas have been predefined by grid operators, they have remained fixed, and may be sub-optimal due to dynamic operating conditions. In this work, a distributed tri-level linear programming model for automatic load shedding to avoid system islanding is presented. Preventing islanding is preferred because it reduces the need for additional load shedding besides the disconnection of transmission lines between islands. This is crucial as maintaining the local generation-demand balance is necessary to preserve frequency stability. Furthermore, uneven distribution of generation resources among islands can lead to increased load shedding, causing economic and reliability challenges. This issue is further compounded in modern power systems heavily dependent on non-dispatchable resources like wind and solar. The upper-level model uses complex power flow measurements to determine the system areas to shed load depending on actual operating conditions using a spectral clustering approach. The mid-level model estimates the area system state, while the lower-level model determines the locations and load values to be shed. The solution is practical and promising for real-world applications.

Existing 3D mask learning methods encounter performance bottlenecks under limited data, and our objective is to overcome this limitation. In this paper, we introduce a triple point masking scheme, named TPM, which serves as a scalable plug- and-play framework for MAE pre-training to achieve multi-mask learning for 3D point clouds. Specifically, we augment the baseline methods with two additional mask choices (i.e., medium mask and low mask) as our core insight is that the recovery process of an object can manifest in diverse ways. Previous high-masking schemes focus on capturing the global representation information but lack fine-grained recovery capabilities, so that the generated pre-training weights tend to play a limited role in the fine-tuning process. With the support of the proposed TPM, current methods can exhibit more flexible and accurate completion capabilities, enabling the potential autoencoder in the pre-training stage to consider multiple representations of a single 3D point cloud object. In addition, during the fine-tuning stage, an SVM-guided weight selection module is proposed to fill the encoder parameters for downstream networks with the optimal weight, maximizing linear accuracy and facilitating the acquisition of intricate representations for new objects. Extensive experimental results and theoretical analysis show that five baselines equipped with the proposed TPM achieve comprehensive performance improvements on various downstream tasks. © 2025 IEEE. Robust Adaptive Control Allocation Schemes for Overactuated Underwater Vehicles under Actuator Faults

In this paper, we investigate the fault-tolerant path following control problem for an overactuated underwater vehicle subject to input saturation and rate of change constraints, actuator faults and parametric (mass and inertia) uncertainty. A robust adaptive control allocation strategy is proposed capable to reconfigure the distribution of the control effort among the remaining healthy actuators in the case some of them failed. The online estimation of actuators' effectiveness and bias fault parameters is integrated with the control allocation and reconfiguration unit. The robustness and performance of the scheme are shown by evaluating the results of simulations and pool experiments of different path-following control problems using overactuated underwater vehicles.
