Grid is a highly distributed heterogeneous environment which interoperates towards completing a common goal. As such, grids performance is highly dependant on the speed of data transfer between systems of which grid consists. Most commonly used and a "de facto" standard for data transfer on grid systems is GridFTP [7]. While working on CRO-GRID Infrastructure [3] project, we faced problems with small data transfer speeds when transferring small files. In this paper we present a program we have developed which uses GridFTP and speeds up data transfer of large number of small or medium sized files. We also present empirical results of the performance measurements achieved while using the implemented system.

The paper deals with lifting implementations of the motion-compensated temporal filter banks in the (t+2D) wavelet codecs. The paper is focused on the problem of optimum setup of the analysis and synthesis filters with the maximum coding efficiency possible for a given delay constrain. Systematic exhaustive experiments have been performed in order to find optimum setup as well as coding efficiency for a given delay constrain.

Scientific visualization evolved up to the stage where collaborative work in virtual coexistence of various experts has become unavoidable in identifying and solving specific visualization tasks. These problems encouraged us to research and define key aspects of visualization service which will enable collaborative work over the Internet. In this paper we define architecture of the whole system and unified interface for all requirements in such environment. Unified requests are sent to visualization processing unit to execute required visualization routine. Collaborative work on the volumetric medical data is a specially demanding task, so we present development of VMI (Visualization of Medical data over the Internet) system, where segmentation for visualization is based on joint histogram.

This paper addresses the control allocation to several aircraft flight controls to produce required body axis angular accelerations. Control law is designed to produce the virtual control effort signals, which are then distributed by solving a sequential least squares problem using active set method to the flight control surfaces to generate this effort. Two cases are described: in the first case the control law and allocation for the healthy aircraft is implemented, and in the second case, jamming of one control surface is introduced at time zero. In this case, it was shown how the controller and allocation compensate for this failure without changing the control law. To implement this system it was assumed that there is a good fault identification system onboard. Normally aircraft are over-actuated and in the case of a control failure this over actuation is more pronounced due to coupling of aircraft dynamics. Instead of using one-to-one mapping between control allocator and control surfaces, actuator dynamics was included in the system. The discrepancy in the optimal signal from control allocation due to this additional dynamics was compensated using the scheme mentioned in this paper. Each gain corresponding to the actuator is tuned using genetic algorithms (GA). The controller and allocation design are implemented on a nonlinear B747 model with actuator dynamics.

Piezoelectric materials have been proposed as embedded power source, which are capable of converting mechanical energy into electrical energy. However, power generated from a piezoelectric material usually comes with poor characteristics such as high voltage, low current and high impedance. In order to drive the embedded sensor circuit, piezoelectric power needs to be characterized and regulated. In this paper, the authors present an analysis on the power generation characteristics of the stiff lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ceramics and its equivalent circuit. It is then verified by simulation and experimental results. Since a single PZT element may not meet the needs of real-world embedded applications, we present experiments and analysis using four identical PZTs. Finally, the authors outline an application where PZT elements are used for power generation in a total knee replacement (TKR) implant.

Neural network (NN) based CAD models have been developed for analysis and design of fin-lines. In the analysis phase, the network takes the dimensional parameters of the finline structure as its input and gives the characteristic impedance (Z 0 ) and normalized guided wavelength (b/lambda cf ) as its output. Another network, trained for design, takes Z 0 along with other dimensions as input and produces the normalized gap width between fins (w/b) as output. A multilayer perceptron trained in the back-propagation mode is used to develop the networks. Results for unilateral fin-line is presented in this paper.

This paper proposes a medium access control (MAC) algorithm, called Cooperative Diversity MAC (CD-MAC), which exploits the cooperative communication capability to improve robustness in wireless ad hoc networks . In CD-MAC, each terminal proactively selects a relay for cooperation and lets it transmit simultaneously when it is beneficial in mitigating interference from nearby terminals and thus improving the network performance. For practicability, CD-MAC is designed based on the widely adopted IEEE 802.11 MAC. System-level simulation study shows that CD-MAC significantly outperforms the original IEEE 802.11 MAC in terms of packet delivery ratio.
