Cooperative coevolution (CC) algorithms, based on the divide-and-conquer strategy, have emerged as the predominant approach to solving large-scale global optimization (LSGO) problems. The efficiency and accuracy of the grouping stage significantly impact the performance of the optimization process. While the general separability grouping (GSG) method has overcome the limitation of previous differential grouping (DG) methods by enabling the decomposition of nonadditively separable functions, it suffers from high computational complexity. To address this challenge, this article proposes a composite separability grouping (CSG) method, seamlessly integrating DG and GSG into a problem decomposition framework to utilize the strengths of both approaches. CSG introduces a step-by-step decomposition framework that accurately decomposes various problem types using fewer computational resources. By sequentially identifying additively, multiplicatively and generally separable variables, CSG progressively groups nonseparable variables by recursively considering the interactions between each nonseparable variable and the formed nonseparable groups. Furthermore, to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of CSG, we introduce two innovative methods: a multiplicatively separable variable detection method and a nonseparable variable grouping method. These two methods are designed to effectively detect multiplicatively separable variables and efficiently group nonseparable variables, respectively. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that CSG achieves more accurate variable grouping with lower computational complexity compared to GSG and state-of-the-art DG-series designs. © 2024 IEEE.

Net load forecasting is essential for the reliable, safe and cost-effective operation of modern power systems incorporating variable renewable technologies. This paper proposes a short-term net load forecasting (STNLF) methodology based on Bayesian neural networks, applicable to microgrids with embedded photovoltaic (PV) systems. Input feature selection and determination of hidden nodes were performed to develop an optimally performing forecasting model. To validate the performance of the model, historical net load site-specific and aggregated data from buildings within the University of Cyprus microgrid (with integrated PV shares of 26%) were used. The developed STNLF model demonstrated a normalized root mean square error of 4.81 % and 3.98% for the solar-integrated building and the microgrid, respectively. Finally, the capability of the developed machine learning forecasting model to yield reliable forecasts was benchmarked against baseline naïve persistence forecasts, achieving skill score improvements of up to 18.61 % at microgrid level. © 2022 IEEE.

Pushing artificial intelligence(AI) from central cloud to network edge has reached board consensus in both industry and academia for materializing the vision of artificial intelligence of things(AIoT) in the sixth-generation(6G) era. This gives rise to an emerging research area known as edge intelligence, which concerns the distillation of human-like intelligence from the vast amount of data scattered at the wireless network edge. Typically, realizing edge intelligence corresponds to the processes of sensing, communication,and computation, which are coupled ingredients for data generation, exchanging, and processing, ***, conventional wireless networks design the three mentioned ingredients separately in a task-agnostic manner, which leads to difficulties in accommodating the stringent demands of ultra-low latency, ultra-high reliability, and high capacity in emerging AI applications like auto-driving and metaverse. This thus prompts a new design paradigm of seamlessly integrated sensing, communication, and computation(ISCC) in a taskoriented manner, which comprehensively accounts for the use of the data in downstream AI tasks. In view of its growing interest, this study provides a timely overview of ISCC for edge intelligence by introducing its basic concept, design challenges, and enabling techniques, surveying the state-of-the-art advancements, and shedding light on the road ahead.

Accurate net load forecasting (NLF) is crucial in modern power systems and microgrids to ensure optimal operation and management. At the microgrid level, the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources requires more efficient methodologies for NLF, since statistical approaches fail to provide accurate forecasts. Performance limitations of existing statistical approaches can be overcome by leveraging machine learning (ML) models. The purpose of this work is to compare the forecasting performance of six ML models (artificial neural network, extreme gradient boosting, k-nearest neighbors, random forest, recurrent neural network and support vector regression) and identify the best-performing model for short-term net load forecasting (STNLF). The comparative analysis was carried out using historical net load and weather data from the renewable integrated microgrid of the University of Cyprus. The results demonstrated accuracies below 10% for all STNLF ML models. Random forest was the best performing model, achieving a normalized root mean square error of 4.32%. The findings illustrate the applicability of STNLF ML models in renewable integrated microgrids, which can benefit microgrid operators in managing and controlling their various assets. © 2022 IEEE.

The frequency of malicious activities by cyber attackers is on the rise, posing a significant challenge to counter cyber attacks in the Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) environment. The vulnerability of wireless networks, which serve as the primary communication media for MEC servers and IoT applications, is due to their open nature of communication. This work proposes a MEC architecture that utilizes Network Function Virtualization (NFV) and Service Function Chain (SFC) to combat cyber adversaries. Additionally, we evaluate the performance of a cyber deception system, which leverages a software-defined networking (SDN) controller and decision- maker to continuously monitor incoming MEC traffic and direct cyber adversaries to a deception MEC server. The deception MEC server collects information about cyber adversaries' intent, capabilities, and potential damage to the system, thus securing legitimate users from cyber attacks. The proposed approach was evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations, and numerous results were obtained which demonstrate the effectiveness of cyber deception in MEC. © 2023 IEEE.

We consider the single-satellite, single-pass localization of ground electromagnetic interference (EMI) sources to protect the quality of service in satellite communications. For a stationary EMI source, the analysis of the time-varying Doppler signature caused by satellite motion provides valuable information for its localization. Due to the high-speed motion of the satellite, the instantaneous Doppler frequency exhibits a high dynamic range and significant nonlinearity. To address this, we previously developed a knowledge-aided signal stationarization approach using the concept of virtual ground references (VGR), thereby enabling a reduced sampling rate, extended coherent processing time, and improved EMI detectability and accuracy. In this paper, we propose several extended approaches, including simplified multi-VGR data fusion as well as iterative and sequential EMI localization methods, to further enhance EMI localization performance while reducing processing complexity. © 2024 IEEE.

Natural ventilation is an essential element of sustainable buildings as well as a promising solution for mitigating indoor air quality (IAQ) issues such as those related to the spread of COVID-19. The current study analyzes wind-driven cross-ventilation efficacy for a low-rise residential building with complex geometry and internal partitions consistent with typical units. A high-resolution computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is carried out using a 3D steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) approach with a realizable k-Ε turbulence closure. Microclimate parameters include different wind speeds and wind directions for a configuration with openings on all four sides of the building. The results indicate that air changes per hour (ACH) increase with windward opening area, and the number of ACH has a linear relationship with the wind velocity. Furthermore, adequate natural ventilation requires rooms to have a minimum of two openings to influence airflow and enhance IAQ. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
