High-voltage transmission lines transmit bulk power from one place to another and may pass through densely populated areas or forests, causing an economic challenge. While following the right-of-way (ROW) rules, high-voltage transmission lines are forced to share the same corridors with others, like metallic gas pipelines. In this regard, the electromagnetic fields from high-voltage transmission lines will affect neighboring pipelines using inductive, conductive, and capacitive effects. As a result, there will be an induced voltage across the metallic pipes, which will have negative repercussions. An example of this includes corrosion in the pipeline itself and those in direct contact with the pipeline via touch and step voltages. This paper studies the electromagnetic interference for the El-Fayoum-Dahshour gas pipeline, which shares the same route for 72 km with three overhead transmission lines, two of which are 500 kV and the third is 220 kV. Several study cases were done to show the impact of soil resistivity variation on the pipeline-induced voltage. The results conclude that the LG fault is the worst-case scenario. Moreover, mitigating the total induced voltage to the recommended safe limits was achieved by applying the polarization cell method.

An energy efficient EdgeAI autoencoder accelerator for reinforcement learning

In EdgeAI embedded devices that exploit reinforcement learning (RL), it is essential to reduce the number of actions taken by the agent in the real world and minimize the compute-intensive policies learning process. Convolutional autoencoders (AEs) has demonstrated great improvement for speeding up the policy learning time when attached to the RL agent, by compressing the high dimensional input data into a small latent representation for feeding the RL agent. Despite reducing the policy learning time, AE adds a significant computational and memory complexity to the model which contributes to the increase in the total computation and the model size. In this article, we propose a model for speeding up the policy learning process of RL agent with the use of AE neural networks, which engages binary and ternary precision to address the high complexity overhead without deteriorating the policy that an RL agent learns. Binary Neural Networks (BNNs) and Ternary Neural Networks (TNNs) compress weights into 1 and 2 bits representations, which result in significant compression of the model size and memory as well as simplifying multiply-accumulate (MAC) operations. We evaluate the performance of our model in three RL environments including DonkeyCar, Miniworld sidewalk, and Miniworld Object Pickup, which emulate various real-world applications with different levels of complexity. With proper hyperparameter optimization and architecture exploration, TNN models achieve near the same average reward, Peak Signal to Noise Ratio (PSNR) and Mean Squared Error (MSE) performance as the full-precision model while reducing the model size by 10 × compared to full-precision and 3 × compared to BNNs. However, in BNN models the average reward drops up to 12% - 25% compared to the full-precision even after increasing its model size by 4 ×. Light behaviours in disordered materials have been of research interest primarily at length scales beyond or comparable to the wavelength of light, because order and disorder are often believed to be almost indistinguishable in the subwavelength regime according to effective medium theory (EMT). However, it was recently demonstrated that the breakdown of EMT occurs even at deep-subwavelength scales when interface phenomena, such as the Goos-Hänchen effect, dominate light flows. Here we develop the engineering of disordered multilayers at deep-subwavelength scales to achieve angle-selective manipulation of wave localization. To examine the disorder-dependent EMT breakdown, we classify the intermediate regime of microstructural phases between deep-subwavelength crystals and uncorrelated disorder through the concept of stealthy hyperuniformity (SHU). In this classification, we devise nontrivial order-to-disorder transitions by selectively tailoring the short-range and long-range order in SHU multilayers, achieving angle-selective control of wave localization. The result paves the way to the realization of deep-subwavelength disordered metamaterials, bridging the gap between the fields of disordered photonics and metamaterials. © 2024, CC BY.

Against the backdrop of the "dual carbon" goal and the green of energy transformation, the volatility and randomness issues of the new power system dominated by wind and solar power are becoming increasingly prominent, affecting the safe and stable operation of the power system. In this context, this article summarizes and organizes the current development and operations status of the auxiliary services market, carbon market, green certificate market, and green electricity market in mature foreign markets, as well as the experience that can be used for reference. This work evaluated the single event functional interrupt (SEFI) response of the commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) and radiation hardened Cortex-M4 (M4) micro controllers with the Armv7-M ISA. The micro controllers were exposed to 200 MeV protons. The COTS M4 was further evaluated under carbon ions and alpha particles to assess if the control bits that depend on the software could have a significant influence on the SEFI cross section for this ISA. The SEU results show that both micro controllers can experience multiple-cell upsets (MCUs), which could facilitate the accumulation of multiple-bit upsets (MBUs). MBUs could be a concern even for radiation hardened systems with ECC, because ECC crashes the system (SEFI) to correct MBUs.

This paper considers a two-dimensional direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation problem from a collaborative, distributed antenna array where each subarray is a distributed sensing node that is arbitrarily oriented. While the relative locations of the subarrays are not precisely known, it is assumed that the configuration of each subarray is locally calibrated whereas the cross-covariance matrix between a pair of distributed nodes includes an unknown phase difference. Without explicitly estimating such unknown phase difference, subspace-based DOA estimation methods fail to coherently utilize the subarrays to locate the DOAs of the impinging signals. We propose a group sparsity-based approach to achieve accurate DOA estimation that is resilient to unknown phase disparities between subarrays. Simulation results clearly illustrate the effectiveness of the group sparsity-based approach using group LASSO, and the superiority over subspace-based methods, such as the MUSIC algorithm, is demonstrated.

This work describes a RF beamforming phased array architecture enabled by a novel wideband polyphase combiner/divider that generates 36 differential I/Q pairs (144 outputs) over 10-20GHz (66% fractional bandwidth). The polyphase combiner is designed in LTCC technology and fuses together two stacked parallel-plate waveguide (PPWG) radial power combiners with a 5-stage PPWG branch-line hybrid coupler. Through rigorous full-wave simulations, it is shown that multiple wideband 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° phases are produced with <7° phase imbalance, ±1dB amplitude error, and better than 0.5dB excess insertion loss over most of the design bandwidth.

The utilization of data analytics to gain insights into the game of basketball has seen a remarkable surge in the past decade. Leagues such as the National Basketball Association are continuously exploring innovative methods to analyze game data, an approach that has significantly influenced the dynamics of the game. But to perform these analyses, a growing amount of data is needed, which is traditionally annotated by humans. This work proposes a 3-stage system able to automatically acquire relevant basketball game data from a broadcast video. The first stage is an object detector combined with a tracking algorithm to extract the main elements present in a basketball game video. Then, the players' visual information is analyzed to identify the players based on pixel color analysis and number recognition. Finally, a statistics generation algorithm assigns the game events to the corresponding player and team, so that the system can be used as an aid for box score annotation in major leagues, low-cost annotation in amateur games, or in-depth game video analysis.
