We demonstrate a tunable terahertz quantum cascade laser using an abutted silicon lens and grating feedback. The device tunes discontinuously over 160 GHz with a center frequency of 4.4 THz.

We report operation of v ~ 2.7 THz quantum-cascade lasers (QCLs) up to 174 K. A new three-well active region, one-well injector scheme is utilized to lower the operating current densities. While the temperature performance of this design is comparable to that of the best published THz QCLs, lower operating current densities make this design a viable alternative.

In a multihop wireless network (MWN), access points (APs) in an MWN should provide high reliability to improve network availability. However, APs do not always work well. An AP may stop functioning due to a power outage or may malfunction for various reasons, including malicious attacks. To maintain MWN availability, the network should work autonomously to treat unreliable APs appropriately. In this paper, we propose an AP evaluation system in which each AP attempts to evaluate neighboring APs in collaboration with other APs that are neighbors of the target. Furthermore, each AP exchanges its evaluation result with other APs and attempts to use the result to control the MWN. We evaluate our proposed scheme using simulations to confirm its effectiveness.

Communication has an important role in multi-robot systems. It can facilitate cooperation, therefore, improve the performance of the system significantly. In this study we investigated the benefits of networked communication by experimentally evaluating the results of two search algorithms which are spiral search and informed random search. The experiments were performed in an experimental area containing obstacles and using e-puck robots where the communication ranges were ldquosimulatedrdquo with the help of an overhead camera. Each robot was allowed to (i) keep an occupancy grid based local map of the environment containing also information about the cells it has visited and (ii) exchange this information with the other robots within its communication range. The effect of the size of communication range on the performance of the system defined as the time of completion of the search task (i.e, locating the target), was investigated.

The success of transfer to improve learning on a target task is highly dependent on the selected source data. Instance-based transfer methods reuse data from the source tasks to augment the training data for the target task. If poorly chosen, this source data may inhibit learning, resulting in negative transfer. The current best performing algorithm for instance-based transfer, TrAdaBoost, performs poorly when given irrelevant source data. We present a novel set-based boosting technique for instance-based transfer. The proposed algorithm, TransferBoost, boosts both individual instances and collective sets of instances from each source task. In effect, TransferBoost boosts each source task, assigning higher weight to those source tasks which show positive transferability to the target task, and then adjusts the weights of the instances within each source task via AdaBoost. The results demonstrate that TransferBoost significantly improves transfer performance over existing instance-based algorithms when given a mix of relevant and irrelevant source data.

This paper presents polymer hot embossing, a polymer processing technique used to fabricate a millimeter-wave four-port hybrid ring waveguide power divider/combiner. The hybrid ring is divided into a two-part assembly and fabricated using polymeric materials. The polymer waveguide ring is then electroplated and placed into metallic fixtures with flanges designed to fit the standard coax-to rectangular waveguide adaptors WR-15 for test and measurement. A comparison between simulated and measured data shows that the performance of the polymer based hybrid ring resembles that of a metallic hybrid ring with minimal degradation, which may be due metallization non-uniformity.

We propose an automatic and precise moving-object extraction method for use in video streams that can also be used for 3-D system applications. The method generates a statistical model for each pixel using several frames, and then uses it to generate trimap images. After manually initializing a frame, unknown regions are automatically determined either background or foreground for the rest of frames. The key technology proposed is an adaptive training scheme, which estimates detection thresholds locally through the algorithm, followed by matting approaches using an iterative process and weighted statistical distance minimization. Experiments demonstrate outperformance of our method for both indoor and outdoor video streams, and also for 3-D modeling and representation.

A noise adaptive Cusum-based algorithm for determining the arrival times of contrast at each spatial location in a 2D time sequence of angiographic images is presented. We employ a new group-wise registration algorithm to remove the effect of patient motions during the acquisition process. By using the registered image the proposed arrival time provides accurate results without relying on a priori knowledge of the shape of the time series at each location or even on the time series at each location having the same shape under translation.

Service-oriented architecture can be considered as a philosophy or paradigm in organizing and utilizing services and capabilities that may be under the control of different ownership domains. Virtualization provides abstraction and isolation of lower level functionalities, enabling portability of higher level functions and sharing of physical resources. However, dynamics, environmental conditions and increasing complexity / heterogeneity of underlying resources call for adaptive resource handling. In this view an intelligent distributed architecture that enables dynamic user management and control on network-wide resource sharing by using the service oriented architecture concept is presented. Additionally, the proposed architecture supports trading of resources that will enable the transformation of traditional business models.
