In recent years, the amount of Internet accessible digital audiovisual media files has vastly increased. Therefore the need to describe the media (by way of metadata) has also increased significantly. MPEG-7 (finalized in 2001) provides a comprehensive and rich metadata standard for the description of multimedia content. Unfortunately, a standardized query format does not exist for MPEG-7, or other multimedia metadata. Such a standard would provide for communications between querying clients and databases, supporting cross-modal and cross-media retrieval. The lSO/lEC SC29WG11 committee decided therefore to contribute to this application space by adding such functionality as a new part of the MPEG-7 series of standards. In response to a Call for Proposals, six proposals were submitted. This paper describes the strengths of each proposal as well as the resulting draft standard for the MPEG-7 query format.

Linear and nonlinear indices of heart rate variability (HRV) have been shown to predict mortality in congestive heart failure (CHF). However, most nonlinear indices describe only the fractality or complexity of HRV but not the intrinsic chaotic properties. In the present study, we performed linear (time- and frequency-domain), complexity (sample entropy), fractal (detrended fluctuation analysis) and chaos (numerical titration) analyses on the HRV of 50 CHF patients from the United Kingdom heart failure evaluation and assessment of risk trial database. Receiver operating characteristic and survival analysis yielded the chaos level to be the best predictor of mortality (followed by low/high frequency power ratio, LF/HF), such that these indices were significant in both univariate and multivariate models. These results indicate the power of heart rate chaos analysis as a potential prognostic tool for CHF.

Software risk advisory tools have been developed to support Verification and Validation (V&V) processes for NASA flight projects on the Constellation program. The Orthogonal Defect Classification COnstructive QUALity MOdel (ODC COQUALMO) predicts software defects introduced and removed classifying them with ODC defect types, allowing various tradeoff analyses. We have been exploring methods to design and optimize V&V processes with static and dynamic versions of the quality model by integrating it with different risk minimization techniques. These techniques allow "what-if" experimentation to determine the impact of V&V techniques on specific risks and overall flight risk. V&V techniques are quantified from a value-based perspective when the defect model is integrated with machine learning, strategic optimization and JPL's Defect Detection and Prevention (DDP) risk management method. Results to-date show that the automated methods are practical for flight projects to design higher value V&V processes in shorter time and with fewer resources.

We propose a new multi-view video coding method using adaptive selection of motion/disparity compensation based on H.264/AVC. One of the key points of the proposed method is the use of view interpolation as a tool for disparity compensation by assigning reference picture indices to interpolated images. We investigate techniques to manipulate the frequency of Terahertz Quantum Cascade Lasers (THz QCL). Frequency tuning by changing the heatsink temperature or the QCL drive current, or by illumination of the QCL with bandgap light. Creation of frequency sidebands through amplitude modulation of the drive current or the bandgap light. We report the observation of strong difference frequency generation in a two-colour THz QCL and discuss the possibility to use this resonant non-linear effect to create (tunable) sidebands by mixing the radiation from an external (tunable) microwave source with the THz field inside the QCL cavity.
