Lateral growth of poly-Ge at temperatures as low as 150°C is reported. External mechanical stress has been properly manipulated to drive the low temperature Cu-induced crystallization of poly-Ge wherever Cu is deposited to form the crystallization seed for lateral growth. Uniaxial compressive stress has been externally applied to the Ge layer by bending the flexible PET substrate inward. A 10-hour period thermo-mechanical post-treatment in the presence of 0.05% equivalent compressive strain leads to a growth rate of 2.5 µm/hour in the direction of the applied stress and 1.8 µm/hour in the perpendicular direction, as confirmed by SEM analysis. We believe that partial growth of the Cu-seeded poly-Ge region in the form of tetragonal structures is the key feature which leads to the lateral growth of the pure-Ge strip. Elimination of the compressive stress hinders the lateral growth completely, even at reasonably high temperatures.

We report the development and progress of terahertz quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) that use the resonant-phonon depopulation scheme to obtain population inversion and where a low-loss, high-modal-confinement metal-metal waveguide is used. These waveguides were fabricated using an indium-gold reactive wafer bonding technique followed by substrate removal, and have been used to obtain lasing up to 137 K in pulsed mode and 93 K in continuous wave (cw) mode. Also, lasing has been obtained at frequencies as low as 2.1 THz (/spl lambda/=141 /spl mu/m), which is the longest wavelength achieved in a QCL without the use of a magnetic field. Recently, an alternative copper-copper thermocompression wafer bonding technique was used to extend cw operation up to a temperature of 97 K.

We proposed an image retrieval algorithm that boosts salient common features from heterogeneous query images and performs the similarity measurement. The retrieval process is carried out in intra and inter feature domains: (1) the intra retrieval utilizes a method of multi-instance query with one feature and; (2) the inter retrieval coordinates the individual intra retrieval results to boost salient common features among query samples. To represent feature saliency, the averaged normalized correlation coefficient is computed in the intra domain and is normalized in the inter domain. The most distinguished point of this algorithm is that it coordinates heterogeneous features for multi-instance retrieval. Up to five different image types could be integrated for retrieval. Simulations demonstrate satisfactory subjective retrieval performances.
