We propose and analyze a specific set of access rules, or "spectrum etiquette", for the 59-64 GHz unlicensed band to allow systems from different manufacturers with different physical and medium-access control protocols to co-exist, sharing the large available bandwidth without interference. The proposed etiquette is unique in that heterogeneous systems are able to co-exist with one another without monitoring the entire band by means of transmissions over a common, narrow band control channel used to establish collision-free transmission schedules over the channels allocated for data transmission within the 59-64 GHz band. Because no common physical layer can be assumed among different systems, the control channel is needed for the systems to schedule transmissions in the rest of the band, and the only means by which systems can communicate with one another over the control channel is the duration of each others' transmissions, which are perceived only as noise. A transmission encoding is defined based on this basic feedback to allow systems to ascertain which system can use which data channel at which time without interference. Analytical and simulation results are presented showing that the proposed etiquette is fair to all the co-existing systems, fully utilizes the spectrum, provides bounded delays for data-channel acquisition time by any given system, and provides minimum channel-use guarantees.

This paper describes the design and analysis of the scheduling algorithm for EC-MAC (energy conserving medium access control) (Sivalingam et al.), a low-power medium access control (MAC) protocol for wireless and mobile ATM networks. Based on the structure of EC-MAC and the characteristics of the wireless channel, we propose a new algorithm which can deal with the bursty errors and the location-dependent errors. Most scheduling algorithms proposed for either wired or wireless networks were analyzed with homogeneous traffic or multimedia services with simplified traffic models. We analyze our scheduling algorithm with more realistic multimedia traffic models. One of the key goals of the scheduling algorithm is simplicity and fast implementation. Unlike the time-stamp based algorithm, our algorithm does not need to sort the virtual time, thus reducing the complexity of the algorithm significantly.

Summary form only given. We have demonstrated a novel and simple wedge-shaped saturable absorber structure based on commercial semiconductor-doped glass. We have successfully used this colored glass device to mode lock a Ti:sapphire laser and, for the first time to our knowledge, to initiate Kerr lens mode locking (KLM). Semiconductor colored glasses can potentially serve as simple and inexpensive devices for initiating KLM and mode locking solid-state lasers.

A general constraint common to many wireless networks lies in the short lifetime of mobile terminal batteries. Energy efficient protocol that adapt to the terminal battery power level can be used to reduce the effects of this limitation. This paper addresses such power-adaptive algorithms in medium access control (MAC) protocols and in the power control mechanisms for hybrid CDMA/TDMA wireless networks. Our access protocol dynamically schedules CDMA channels to mobiles based on their traffic requests and battery power levels. This technique assigns mobiles with similar traffic requests and battery power levels to one or more slots. Discrete-event simulation has been used to demonstrate that the proposed techniques indeed provide low-power mobiles with increased throughput and reduced latency while reducing power usage.

As VLSI circuit speeds have increased, the need for accurate three-dimensional interconnect models has become essential to accurate chip and system design. In this paper we describe an integral equation approach to modeling the impedance of interconnect structures accounting for both the charge accumulation on the surface of conductors and the current traveling along conductors. Unlike previous methods, our approach is based on a modified nodal analysis formulation and can be used directly to generate guaranteed passive low order interconnect models for efficient inclusion in a standard circuit simulator.

In this paper, we present a framework for managing ATM customer networks using WWW and CORBA technologies. The WWW technology may provide network management operators with platform independence, location independence, friendly and/or consistent management behavior as well as secure management operations. The main problems in a Web-based network management system may include limited management capabilities of HTTP operations and lack of supporting mechanisms for trap or event notifications. These problems are, in this paper, solved by the integration of Java and CORBA technologies. We extend the current Web technology which is being used for transferring various information on Internet to those which can be used to transfer management requests and replies as well as event notifications. A Web browser is used as a universal user interface for monitoring and controlling the activities of the ATM customer networks. We have developed an integrated customer network management system which can manage SNMP-enabled or CMIP-enabled network devices and provide ATM CNM services. In particular, we applied the CORBA technology to accommodate several management protocols such as SNMP, CMIP and other management protocols. Through the CORBA IDL-to-Java mapping, complex management operations as well as event notifications are supported without modification of the current WWW systems.

Energy efficiency is an important issue in mobile wireless networks since the battery life of mobile terminals is limited. Conservation of battery power has been addressed using many techniques. This paper addresses energy efficiency in medium access control (MAC) protocols for wireless networks. The paper develops a framework to study the energy consumption of a MAC protocol from the transceiver usage perspective. This framework is then applied to compare the performance of a set of protocols that includes IEEE 802.11, energy-conserving MAC (EC-MAC), PRMA, multiservices dynamic reservation-TDMA (MDR-TDMA), and distributed-queueing request update multiple access (DQRUMA). The performance metrics considered are transmitter and receiver usage times for packet transmission and reception. The analysis here shows that protocols that aim to reduce the number of contentions perform better from a energy consumption perspective. The receiver usage time, however; tends to be higher for protocols that require the mobile to sense the medium before attempting transmission.

We study the problem of representing images within a multimedia Database Management System (DBMS), in order to support fast retrieval operations without compromising storage efficiency. To achieve this goal, we propose new image coding techniques which combine a wavelet representation, embedded coding of the wavelet coefficients, and segmentation of image-domain regions in the wavelet domain. A bitstream is generated in which each image region is encoded independently of other regions, without having to explicitly store information describing the regions. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithms achieve coding performance which compares favorably, both perceptually and objectively, to that achieved using state-of-the-art image/video coding techniques while additionally providing region-based support.

This study presents a new algorithm for improved prediction of ac hot-carrier lifetime, It is based on identifying and projecting the dominant degradation asymptote, The algorithm accounts for the stress-bias dependence of the hot-carrier degradation rate and the nonlinearity of the degradation time-dependence, Detailed model parameter extraction and lifetime prediction procedures are explained, and applications of the new algorithm demonstrated, Significant differences in the predicted ac-lifetimes are found between the existing and the new algorithms over a wide range of CMOS inverter design parameters, such as the input ramp rate and the load capacitance.

Variation is a key concern in semiconductor manufacturing and is manifest in several forms, Spatial variation across each wafer results from equipment or process limitations, and variation within each die may be exacerbated further by complex pattern dependencies, Spatial variation information is important not only for process optimization and control, but also for design of circuits that are robust to such variation, Systematic and random components of the variation must be identified, and models relating the spatial variation to specific process and pattern causes are needed, In this work, extraction and modeling methods are described for wafer-level, die-level, and wafer-die interaction contributions to spatial variation. Wafer-level estimation methods include filtering, spline, and regression based approaches, Die-level (or intra-die) variation can be extracted using spatial Fourier transform methods;important issues include spectral interpolation and sampling requirements, Finally, the interaction between wafer- and die-level effects is important to fully capture and separate systematic versus random variation;spline- and frequency-based methods are proposed for this modeling, Together, these provide an effective collection of methods to identify and model spatial variation for future use in process control to reduce systematic variation, and in process/device design to produce more robust circuits.
