Total dissolved solids (TDS) consisting of inorganic salts and organic matter are pollutants to the aquatic and water systems for human use. This paper studied the effect of ceramic adsorbent composition on improving the quality of the produced water (PW) by decreasing TDS before entering reverse osmosis (RO). Manufacturing ceramic adsorbents use a mixture of spent catalysts of residues catalytic cracking (RCC) and natural clay in various compositions. Experiments were performed using the PW from one oil and gas company in South Sumatra, Indonesia. The initial characterization of produced water contains total dissolved solids of 14,556 mg/L. The flow rate of PW into the ceramic adsorbent column were varied from 6 to 8 L/min at a contact time of 15 to 120 min. The results showed that ceramic adsorbent A (diameter 10 mm and thickness 10 mm, 70% clay, and 30% RCC) reduced TDS by 74.58%. Adsorbent B (diameter of 20 mm and thickness of 10 mm, 70% RCC and 30% clay) lowers TDS by 56.68% at a flow rate of 6 L/min and a contact time of 60 min. Adsorbent C (diameter of 10 mm and thickness of 10 mm, 30% clay, and 70% RCC) reduced TDS by 59.40% at a flow rate of 6 L/min and a flow time of 60 min. Adsorbent D (diameter of 20 mm, thickness of 10 mm, 30% clay, and 70% RCC) lowers TDS by 54.38% at a flow rate of 6 L/ min and a contact time of 60 min. After being transferred into the adsorption column, their filtrates were sent into the Reverse Osmosis (RO) membrane. The final permeates of RO have TDS values between 1,720 mg/L to 3,930 mg/L that met water standards for oil and gas exploration wastewater in Indonesia. © 2023 The Authors. All rights reserved.

Danau Ranau geothermal field is located in Lampung and South Sumatra province, Indonesia. It is classified as a high terrain volcanic hydrothermal system controlled by the Sumatran fault as the permeability zone. The study aims to characterize the Danau Ranau reservoir, update the conceptual model, and assess the geothermal power capacity coupled with Monte Carlo simulation. Therefore, the numerical reservoir simulation is performed using TOUGH2 software to achieve a natural state model based on geoscience interpretation data. The numerical reservoir models' output matches the geological, geochemical, and geophysical interpretation, thus becoming important information (3D pressure and temperature, heat and mass flow, location of heat source, boundary condition, reservoir geometry) in the updated conceptual model. The probabilistic heat stored method results based on the natural state model's output show that Danau Ranau geothermal field can generate up to 30 MW. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

A comparison of the Matrix Pencil Method and the Cauchy Method is studied. The two methods both serve as natural resonant frequency extraction algorithm but is based on information in different domains. Their performances are analyzed using synthesized data and full-wave simulated data. Both methods present the capability to extract NRFs from targets. Numerical results are presented to show the similarity and differences between the two methods. © 2021 IEEE.

Hematite (α-Fe2O3) is a low-cost n-type semiconductor with significant absorption of visible light owing to its low bandgap energy of 2.1 eV. The wide applications of hematite in renewable energy and environmental remediation continuously entice more studies. However, the low absorbance of solar energy in the UV-range significantly limits the efficiency of many photocatalytic materials. In this study, we tried to dope α-Fe2O3 with silver via chemical precipitation method to lower the bandgap energy and widen its absorbance. The effects of doping hematite with Ag on the structure, morphology, elemental composition, and optical absorbance were determined by characterizing the samples via X-ray diffractometry (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, and UV-Vis spectroscopy, respectively. It was observed from the XRD patterns that the α-Fe2O3 crystallizes in hexagonal structure with lattice parameters a = 5.0380 Å and c = 13.7720 Å for the pure α-Fe2O3. Doping with 0.1M and 0.2M AgNO3 leads to a greater value of the lattice parameters indicating successful doping. SEM images show that the hematite formed was composed of particles with irregular shapes that have sizes in the range 0.865-0.883 μm. Excess silver particles were deposited on the surface of hematite. UV-Vis spectra show that there is a red-shift in the absorption band of the Ag-doped hematite. A notable decrease in the bandgap energy of the undoped α-Fe2O3 was observed from ~2.2eV to ~2.0eV with the increase in the amount of the dopant in the hematite as determined using Tauc’s plot. © 2021 Trans Tech Publications Ltd, Switzerland.

2024 T3 is one of aluminium alloys which are widely used in the aircraft structures. Anodizing of alluminium alloy in tartaric-sulphuric acid (TSA) electrolyte is developed to obtain more environmentally-friendly process and to produce anodize layer with better corrosion resistance. In this research work, the influences of anodizing parameters of Al 2024 T3 in TSA on the thickness, weight and corrosion resistance of the anodize layer are studied. Corrosion resistance test was carried out by conducting salt spray test for 336 hours and anodic polarization measurements using potentiostat. Results of three-factor analysis of variance (ANOVA) demonstrated that the most influencing factor that determines the thickness and weight of the anodize layer is temperature, followed by applied voltage, duration of anodizing, voltage-temperature interaction, interaction of temperature-duration of anodizing, interaction of voltage-temperature-duration of anodizing, and interaction of voltage and duration of anodizing. The pit density and corrosion current density (icorr) were found to be dependent on the coating thickness. The anodize layer with a thickness of higher than 3 μm was not experienced to pitting corrosion during 336 hours of salt spray test.

Influence of Brine Compositions on Wetting Preference of Montmorillonite in Rock/Brine/Oil System: An in Silico Study

In this paper, we investigated dependency of thin brine film stability confined between rock and hydrocarbon layer on brine solution properties in terms of salinity and anionic components. Molecular Dynamics simulation was used to investigate behavior of the system at rock/brine and brine/oil interfaces to characterize thin brine film. Here, montmorillonite, a thin water film containing different salinities (low salinity water, 5,000 ppm, and high salinity water, 70,000 ppm) of NaCl and Na2SO4, and organic components constituting 3:1 molar mixture of decane and sodium decanoate were considered to represent rock, brine, and oil, respectively. High salinity brine makes the thin film more stable. Extensive repulsive electrostatic forces between Cl⁻ anions distributed in brine film and carboxylate functional groups at the brine/oil interface impede penetration of oil components into the brine film and then their adsorption onto the clay surface. Low salinity Na2SO4 showed the most stable brine film, in which distribution of anions at the brine/oil interface prevents intrusion of oil components into the brine film. However, high salinity Na2SO4 showed strong potential in forming ionic aggregations comprising Na+ cations and anions. These ionic aggregations act as bridging agents to adhere oil constituents onto the clay slab. © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Batu Gede and Batu Kapur are administratively located in Subang Regency, West Java, precisely in the northern part of Tangkuban Perahu Geothermal Working Area. Characteristics of the manifestations in Batu Gede and Batu Kapur are generally bicarbonate neutral pH warm springs and their location exposed in the foot of Tangkuban Perahu Volcano. Despite the similar chemical characteristic of those two manifestations, there is a significant characteristic difference between them. Spring with low pH with the pungent smell emerges in the Batu Gede not far from neutral pH bicarbonate warm spring. The aim of this research is to determine control of the occurrence and relationship of manifestation in both areas by conducting geological mapping. Surface manifestations are controlled by a geological process associated with primary and secondary permeability. Both manifestations emerge dominantly in the control of fault as a secondary permeability. Primary permeability also controls the occurrence of manifestations but not significant. Batu Gede manifestations are dominantly controlled by overstepping structure, while Batu Kapur are dominantly controlled by intersections between structures. Based on high content of SO4-2, acid pH, and the presence of sulfur, the acid manifestation might be correlated with magmatic activity beneath Batu Gede's manifestation. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

This study is used a background source model to calculate probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) in Manado City. The gridded seismicity model is applied to characterize the background source model based on the seismicity rate on each grid 0.1 × 0.1 degrees. The results obtained from this study was the contribution of background sources for PSHA in Manado City for the probability of excedence 10% in 50 years is 0.18 ≥ g ≤ 0.19. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of particle size in the thermoluminescence (TL) response of natural quartz sensitized with high gamma dose. For this, fragments of a single crystal taken from the Solonópole district (Brazil) were crushed and classified into ten size fractions ranging from 38 μm to 5 mm. Aliquots of each size fraction were sensitized with 25 kGy of gamma dose of 60Co and heat-treated in a muffle furnace at 400oC. The non-sensitized samples were exposed to test doses between 50 Gy and 5 kGy and the sensitized samples were exposed to a unique test dose equal to 50 mGy. For non-sensitized samples, the TL peak near 325 °C increases with the particle size decreasing. However, in the case of sensitized samples, the TL output near 280 °C increases with the increasing of particle size up to mean grain size equal to 308 μm. Above 308 μm, an abrupt reduction in the TL intensity was noticed. These effects are discussed in relation to the specific surface area and the different interaction of high gamma doses with fine and coarse particles of quartz. © 2010 IOP Publishing Ltd.
