Novel robust Elman neural network-based predictive models for bubble point oil formation volume factor and solution gas–oil ratio using experimental data

Bubble point oil formation volume factor (Bob) and solution gas–oil ratio (Rs) are two crucial PVT parameters used for modeling and volumetric calculations in petroleum industry. They are usually determined in laboratory or estimated using empirical correlations. Experimental methods are time-consuming and expensive where empirical correlations have limitations. Artificial intelligence can be sued overcome these limitations to develop more accurate, robust, and quick predictive tools. In this paper, we used three artificial neural network algorithms to develop intelligent models to predict Bob and Rest using 465 experimental data. Application of the Elman neural network (ENN) for this purpose is being reported for the first time. A variety of input parameters were selected based on a sensitivity analysis which include reservoir temperature (T), oil API gravity (°API), bubble point pressure (Pb), gas-specific gravity (γg), and Rs was used to predict the Bob. T, °API, Pb, γg, and Bob was used to predict the Rs. The ENN model was found superior to the other developed smart models and the empirical correlations with coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.993, root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.0093, and average absolute percent relative error (AAPRE) of 0.93% for the Bob and 0.999, 0.016, and 6.72% for the Rs, respectively. The ENN network has fewer adjustable parameters and provides faster training capabilities using fewer neurons and hidden layers compared to other ANN algorithms. The developed smart predictive tools can be safely used instead of laboratory methods and empirical correlations for a much wider ranges of input parameters and with higher accuracy and confidence. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag London Ltd., part of Springer Nature 2024.

Challenges and Implications for the mining Industry for Future Resources Extraction

Epochs of human civilization are marked by the sources of materials used at the periods, namely: Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Silicon Age. The materials used at these eras were mined and can be linked to the development of mining for the benefit of society. The same epochs are indications of advances in Materials Science and engineering. We are now in the Smart or Intelligent Materials age. One of the key drivers of the Smart Materials era is sustainable development. To achieve sustainable development, the G8 countries agreed on the 3R Initiative at the Sea Island Summit in June 2004 that was launched at the Ministerial Conference in Tokyo in 2005. The 3Rs concept for sustainable development refers to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle and it is now extended to 4Rs to include "Recover " . There is potential to further extend the 4Rs concept to 5Rs to include Reprocess. Achieving the objectives of 5Rs within the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations involves a critical look at how renewable energy and Smart or Intelligent materials are developed. A critical source of Smart materials and renewable energy resources is mining. Unfortunately, mining is now considered intolerable and antagonistic to sustainable development in the context of environmental friendliness and its contribution to fossil fuel use consequences. Intelligent mining ensures sustainable resource recovery and processing and will make critical materials availability for Smart materials and renewable energy development. Regrettably, mining currently faces aggressive challenges with a bleak future in accomplishing these objectives. © 2022 Society of Materials engineering for Resources of Japan. All rights reserved.

In recent years airborne particulate matter and respirable coal mine dust have been at the center of research focused on worker health in the resource and infrastructure industries because of a resurgence of severe forms of lung disease among mine workers. Federal research agencies have heavily invested in finding the root cause. Attempts are also being made to coordinate various research findings. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires maintaining of Emissions Inventory (EI) where a detailed estimate of "criteria" pollutants and "hazardous" air pollutants is performed. Respirable dust falls under the "hazardous" category. However, it is unclear whether there are modern tools to perform emission inventories in the mines where such respirable diseases are prevalent. Performing EI has the potential to increase the awareness about dust footprint in extractive industries. This article is the first of a two-part series in which the authors present available platforms for EIs and their pros and cons. The second part will focus on recent achievements in respirable-dust-related research at various universities and organizations.

Surface analysis of different wood polymer composites exposed to artificial weathering

This study presents a superficial analysis of different wood polymer composites (WPC) comprising polystyrene (WPSC), poly(furfuryl alcohol) (WPFAC), and pine resin (WPRC) when exposed to artificial weathering. The study investigates the influence of resin type on the composites, focusing on their chemical, colorimetric, morphological, and thermal properties. The main findings indicate WPSC exhibits poor resistance to weathering, allowing ultraviolet radiation damage on the lignocellulosic component of the composite, leading to oxidized groups formation. Conversely, WPFAC and WPRC demonstrate good wood protection capabilities by preventing significant deterioration of holocellulose and acting as filters for radiation and moisture. Moreover, WPFAC exhibits the lowest decrease in carbonyl index and O/C ratio, with reductions of 2.6 and 11.6%, respectively. These findings are significant as they demonstrate that poly(furfuryl alcohol) and pine resin can be used to produce WPCs that delay and mitigate wood degradation by weathering, contributing to the increased potential utilization of bioresins. © 2024 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

Advancing Precision Agriculture: Machine Learning-Enhanced GPR Analysis for Root-Zone Soil Moisture Assessment in Mega Farms

In this article, we investigate an intelligent ground penetrating radar (GPR) that facilitates root-zone soil moisture estimation, a key parameter in precision agriculture. To create an intelligent GPR, we must train machine learning (ML) methods applied to the GPR-received signal. This process requires a large number of labeled GPR data that would be time-consuming and labor-intensive if created via field measurements. This article uses gprMAX software to emulate drone-coupled GPR received signal to generate large-scale data for training ML models. The data are created via a 1.5 GHz Ricker waveform considering a three-layer soil consistent with a realistic soil horizon model. The approach is structured as follows: first, we generate a synthetic dataset using gprMAX. Feature engineering techniques are then employed to extract meaningful components from the GPR signals, followed by a rigorous selection process to identify the most effective ML model for soil moisture prediction. Finally, we validate our model by integrating synthetic data with real GPR data collected at the SoilX lab at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, enhancing prediction accuracy and generalization capability. Our proposed model achieves an overall average root-mean-squared error of 0.5%, and 1.56 cm for moisture and depth estimations, respectively. The proposed intelligent GPR, when installed on a drone, enables high horizontal (e.g., 10 m) and vertical (e.g., 1.5 cm) resolution and high penetration depth (beyond 2 m) megafarm root-zone 3-D moisture map creation. Thus, it offers much higher capabilities when compared to traditional methods, such as synthetic aperture radar and satellite imaging. These results facilitate efficient farming practices, such as optimizing irrigation models, for better crop yields and food security. © 2023 IEEE.

A novel green nanocomposite for EOR: Experimental Investigation of IFT Reduction, wettability Shift, and nanofluid stability

A stable nanofluid (NF) is crucial for success of nano-enhanced oil recovery (nEOR) processes. However, this represents a significant challenge as nanoparticles (NPs) tend to agglomerate under high salinity and NP concentration adversely affecting the oil recovery. New nanomaterials including functionalized nanoparticles also known as nanocomposites (NC) can help to overcome these issues. In this paper, first, we reported synthesis, characterization, and performance evaluation of a novel hydrophobic CuO-SiO2-Montmorillonite-K+-Thiazine NC for the first time. The NC was characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analysis (EDAX), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetry Analysis (TGA), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). SEM analysis showed that the NC is composed of uniformly distributed NPs. EDAX results confirmed presence of Cu, SiO2, O2, and Cl in the NC. XRD analysis indicated that SiO2 is the dominant phase in the crystal lattice and responsible for adsorption capacity of the NC. TGA analysis showed that the NC will be thermally stable in typical reservoir temperatures (∼80°C). FTIR results confirmed presence of Si-O, Cu-O, Si-O-Si, Al-O-Si, Al-OH, and OH bonds in the NC. In the second phase of this research work, the novel NC was used to investigate recovery of a Kazakhstani paraffinic heavy crude oil from Berea sandstone with focus on IFT reduction, oil recovery, wettability alteration, and stability analysis of the NFs. NFs were prepared with NC concentrations of 250, 500, and 1,000 ppm using moderate salinity (MS), low salinity (LS), and distilled water (DW). The results showed that the optimal NF (250 ppm LS) exhibited a high zeta potential value (−65.5 mV) indicating a high stability which is superior to all of the previously reported NCs. This high stability is attributed to use of thaizine as a source of natural surfactant. The optimum NF also altered the wettability of the sandstone by 77.6% and the

This paper describes the swelling phenomenon that occurs in the Manikin tunnel, an ongoing diversion tunnel for the Manikin Dam Project in Kupang, Indonesia, driven through swelling clay underlain by the Bobonaro Formation. The Manikin tunnel experiences significant large deformation, resulting in substantial damage to its initial supporting structures. Three initial support systems are assessed through numerical simulation using the 2-D finite element method, namely: (1) the original design, (2) larger steel-rib + invert beam, and (3) the original design with forepoling + invert beam. To represent the swelling phenomenon, a zone of ground strength reduction is developed in the area surrounding the tunnel, and swelling pressure is exerted on the initial lining. This method is able to match the results of convergence monitoring. Numerical simulations show that the original initial support design results in large convergence up to 89 cm or 11.4% strain and thickness of plastic zone up to 3 m, but the proposed alternative support systems are able to control the convergence much better. For the initial support with larger steel rib + invert beam, the convergence is only 14 cm or 1.8% strain, and for the original support with forepoling + invert beam, the convergence is only 9 cm or 1.2% strain. This paper points out that the original support design with forepoling + invert beam yields the best supporting method as it results in the smallest horizontal and diagonal convergences. © 2022 ARMA, American Rock Mechanics Association.

Remote sensing techniques provide valuable insights into lithological interpretation and improve the accuracy of geological surveys. Due to the complex terrain of Langkawi Island, which is in the northwestern part of the Malay Peninsula, conducting detailed field investigations is challenging. However, advancements in technology have made remote sensing an effective method for surveying areas that are hard to access. In this study, Landsat 9 data, with a spatial resolution of 30 m, served as the primary source of information. The initial preprocessing of this data was done using ENVI software. After preprocessing, carefully selected band combinations and ratios were used to extract valuable geological insights. Remote sensing-based lithological interpretation is crucial in modern geological surveys. In this study, the band ratio technique was employed to map the lithological distribution. This study focused on the southern end of the Langkawi archipelago, specifically the Dayang Bunting and Tuba Islands, where the geological characteristics are of particular interest due to their unique geological history and topography. To achieve the objectives, the band ratio technique applied to satellite imagery allows for the derivation and analysis of the lithological distribution patterns on these islands. This study compared previously used band ratio combinations with those tested here to find the most effective for distinguishing lithology types. After testing 32 permutations, by comparing with the original geological map and combining previous field observations, the four most successful combinations were visually evaluated: RGB 2/3 2/5 2/6, 4/3 4/6 4/7, 2/4 2/6 2/7, and 5/2 5/6 5/7. On Dayang Bunting and Tuba Islands, these combinations revealed distinct colors, differentiating limestone, marble, and granite. Lembang fault is an active fault that may trigger earthquakes and landslides in the North Bandung area. The movement of the fault is on the mainland, theLembang fult is still being debated even though an earthquake has been recorded which may have originated from this fault. The epicenter in the Cihideung area, in addition to tectonic influences, the activity of the Lembang fault is also thought to be influenced by volcanism which can affect the mechanism of fault movement. Tectonic processes play an essential role in the formation of the morphology of an area. The Lembang fault is a normal fault that was formed as a result of tectonic activity in the Neogene sge, located in the northern part of Bandung, stretching for 30 km in a west-east direction, the existence of this fault has shaped the morphology of the Lembang plains to the north and forms a hilly path trending west-east to the north. South. Tectonic geomorphology is the main factor that controls the development of landforms in active tectonic areas and have a significant influence on the natural features of mountains and watersheds which are located east of the Lembang fault, Cikapundung, and Cikeruh. Trending northwest-southeast geomorphic indication analysis is used to study tectonic activity in the study area in the form of basin shape (Bs), watersheds gradient index (SL), drainage basin asymmetry (Af), mountain face sinuosity (SMF) and valley floor width to valley height ratio (Vf). These geomorphic indication variables are combined to produce degrees of relative tectonic activity in the research area which can be divided into four classes;class 1 has a very high relative tectonic activity index, class 2 has a relatively high tectonic activity index, class 3 has a relatively moderate tectonic activity index, and class 4 has a relatively low tectonic activity index, field observation data in the form of the landform and geology of the research area support these results. © 2023 ACRS. The limited degradation of synthetic polymers used in food packaging when discarded in the environment is a major concern for society. Therefore, industry and academia have sought to develop biodegradable and eco-friendly materials for single-use in packaging. An interesting alternative for the food industry is biodegradable polymeric films, which is why different biopolymers have been used in the production of sustainable packaging. It is worth mentioning that the use of biodegradable polymers is one of the most successful innovations in the industry to address issues related to the environment. Among the available raw materials, starch extracted from different renewable sources is very promising for this purpose, due to its abundance, low-cost compared to other polymers and ability to produce non-toxic films. However, when used alone, pure starch has many limitations, which can be overcome by developing a mixture with other polymers (polymer blends), preferably from renewable and biodegradable sources, such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA). In this context, the absence of literature reviews evidencing the results of the application of films in foods led us to write this article, given the importance of polymer blends produced with different types of starch (cassava, corn, pea, potato, rice and wheat) and the PLA matrix. According to the results, it is clear that polymer blends based on PLA/Starch for food packaging are very promising, already being part of the industries solutions, aiming to minimize the large volume of plastic waste of petrochemical origin discarded in nature. Obviously, as with any technology, more research is needed to further improve the performance of the films, and while much research has made great strides, there are still limitations that prevent the commercialization of these materials. © The Author(s) 2023.
