Hospital wastewater contains a complex mixture of pollutants, including biological, chemical, and pharmaceutical contaminants, which necessitates effective treatment strategies. This study investigates the efficiency of electrocoagulation for treating hospital wastewater while employing predictive modeling techniques, including feedforward neural networks (FFNN), neural Wiener (NW), neural Hammerstein (NH), and neural Hammerstein–Wiener (NHW) models. The electrocoagulation process was conducted using aluminum and carbon electrodes, with varying voltage levels (5 V, 10 V, and 15 V) and treatment durations (30, 60, 90, and 120 min). Key water quality parameters, including turbidity, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), Escherichia coli, and coliform bacteria, were analyzed before and after treatment. Results demonstrated that increasing voltage and contact time significantly enhanced pollutant removal, with the highest removal efficiencies observed at 15 V and 120 min. Electrocoagulation effectively reduced turbidity, BOD, and COD levels while achieving substantial microbial inactivation. The predictive models successfully captured electrocoagulation dynamics, with the neural Hammerstein–Wiener model exhibiting the highest accuracy (root mean square error [RMSE]: 0.0399, weighted mean absolute percentage error [WMAPE]: 0.0665). These findings suggest that electrocoagulation, coupled with advanced modeling techniques, provides a sustainable and efficient hospital wastewater treatment approach. Future research should focus on optimizing operational parameters, integrating hybrid treatment methods, and developing real-time monitoring systems to enhance treatment efficiency and cost-effectiveness. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2025.

In recent years, forsterite (Fo, Mg₂SiO₄) has emerged as a promising biomaterial for bone tissue engineering scaffolds, demonstrating efficacy in inhibiting the growth of clinical bacterial isolates. Additionally, rare-earth (RE) doped Fo exhibits excitation properties that match the near-infrared (NIR) biological transparency window (700-1800 nm), facilitating deep penetration into biological tissues. Despite these advantageous properties, the literature lacks data on the toxicity of RE-doped forsterite and its effects on damaged or dysfunctional cells, such as cancer cells. This study presents, for the first time, toxicity analyses of RE-doped forsterite nanoparticles (NPs) in cultures of healthy and tumor skin cells. Specifically, forsterite doped with Er³⁺, Yb³⁺, and a combination of Er³⁺/Yb³⁺, produced via reverse strike coprecipitation (RSC), was employed in cytotoxicity assays. The influence of solution pH on the toxicity response was also investigated. The results indicated that all NPs exhibited biocompatibility with keratinocytes, while melanoma cells showed increased cell death. Photoluminescence (PL) analyses revealed that Fo:Yb displayed enhanced blue emission under 980 nm excitation, whereas Fo:Er/Yb exhibited green and red emissions. The study proposes that the combination of the alkalinization effect of forsterite with the upconversion (UC) photoactivity of the NPs could serve as a dual-attack system for in situ oncological treatment. © 2024, The Authors. Fuel cell membranes can be used in various ways to achieve zero-emission transport and energy systems, which offer a promising way to power production due to their higher efficiency compared to the internal combustion engine and the eco-environment. Perfluoro sulfonic acid membranes used for proton exchange membranes (PEMs) have certain drawbacks, like higher fuel permeability and expense, lower mechanical and chemical durability, and proton conductivity under low humidity and above 80 °C temperature. Researchers have drawn their attention to the production of polymer electrolyte membranes with higher proton conductivity, thermal and chemical resilience, maximum power density, lower fuel permeability, and lower expense. For sustainable clean energy generation, a review covering the most useful features of advanced material-associated membranes would be of great benefit to all interested communities. This paper endeavors to explore several types of novel inorganic fillers and crosslinking agents, which have been incorporated into membrane matrices to design the desired properties for an advanced fuel cell system. Membrane parameters such as proton conductivity, the ability of H2 transport, and the stability of the membrane are described. Research directions for developing fuel cell membranes are addressed based on several challenges suggested. The technological advancement of nanostructured materials for fuel cell applications is believed to significantly promote the future clean energy generation technology in practice. © 2025 The Authors

Metal-Doped Carbon-Supported/Modified Titanate Nanotubes for Perfluorooctane Sulfonate Degradation in Water：Effects of Preparation Conditions, Mechanisms, and Parameter Optimization

Metal-doped, activated carbon (AC) supported titanate nanotubes (Me/TNTs@AC) have been shown promising for photocatalytic degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). However, the preparation recipe of these adsorptive photocatalysts has not yet been optimized in terms of type and content of precursor materials and the metal dopants as well as synthesizing conditions. To address this knowledge gap, we prepared TNTs@AC based on a commercial TiO2 and six different ACs at varying AC:TiO2 ratios and under different hydrothermal conditions. In addition, a suite of dopant metal ions, including Fe3+, Bi3+, Ga3+, In3+, Co2+, Cu2+, and Mn2+, were compared to gauge their effect on the material photoactivity. Moreover, the effect of the calcination temperature was also tested. The photocatalytic performance of Me/TNTs@AC was evaluated based on their effectiveness in defluorination of pre-sorbed perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) after 4-h UV irradiation. Based on the experimental results, the highest photocatalytic mineralization efficiency (66.2%) of PFOS was achieved using Ga/TNTs@AC prepared under the following conditions: Filtrosorb-400® = 50 wt.%, Ga = 2 wt.%, hydrothermal treatment temperature = 130 ℃, hydrothermal duration = 72 h, and calcination temperature = 550 ℃. To understand the underlying mechanisms, selected materials were characterized via X-ray diffraction, the BET surface area and pore volume, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrometry, and photoluminescence. The results revealed that the superior photoactivity of Ga/TNTs@AC is attributed to the Ga-facilitated formation of pure crystallized anatase phase during the calcination, high UV light absorption, formation of microscale hybrid AC-anatase-Ga phases, and oxygen defects induced by Ga3+. The information can facilitate preparation and optimization of composite photocatalysts for efficient adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of PFAS in water. © 2022, The Authors. Top of reservoir (TOR) determination is one of the resource keys features of the geothermal resource and significantly impacts the well's productivity (Casing Point Determination). It is defined from the conceptual model process and refined by the well temperature data. This paper will describe the geologic controls on the top of reservoir geometries of the Muara Laboh (ML). ML has located in step over-pull apart basins of the Great Sumatra Fault Zone segment. The features then accommodate the emplacement of quaternary to tertiary volcanic and intrusion. The geoscientific data from the existing conceptual model, well cuttings, cores, MeB test, and image log data were combined with the drilling parameter data (mud temperature & mud loses) to characterize the geology of the TOR. Drilling results show that wells in the NE sector have a shallower TOR. The TOR is located near the quaternary Patah Sembilan volcanic unit's contact with the undifferentiated silicic formation. The NE sector TOR corresponds with the change of alteration type from smectite rich argillic zone (240°C) identified underlaying the NE reservoir sector's transition zone. MeB Index below 10 seems to be corresponding with the base of conductive of 5 Ohm, and the NE TOR location. The SW sectors TOR sits a deeper elevation (∼300msl), lies within the intercalated dacite-andesite volcanic unit, higher temperature propylitic alteration zone, with epidote, epidote-adularia-quartz, and open space veins were observed below the TOR. Similar to the NE sector, the drop of the MeB index to less than ten, which is also related to the lithology contact, shows the possibility that the TOR has dropped in the SW sector. Below the low MeB zone, calcite infilled the fractures and sometimes encapsulated the pre-existing epidote vein;calcite then decreases with increasing epidote vein and epidote-adularia vein occurrence. We observed 754 microearthquake data by at least 15 stations for six months as a tool to monitor and characterize the subsurface condition in two-phase geothermal field in Southern Bandung. The data were reduced to 417 events having azimuthal gap less than 180°. We determine the initial earthquake locations in this study by using Geiger method and we update the hypocenter locations by performing simultaneous inversion for hypocenters and 1D velocity structure followed by 3D tomographic inversion. We obtained the velocity structure by utilizing TomoDD to perform 3D tomographic inversion. There are four clusters of seismicity observed in this study which we suspected related to the injection, production, and tectonic activity of the study area. The southern cluster is consistent with the location of injection wells and spread from 1 km depth to 8 km depth, indicating that MEQ events were triggered by injection activity. The production area is characterized by a denser population of events and the events were distributed closely ranging from 1 to 3 km depth. We suspect that the third cluster is caused by development activity of steam dominated geothermal field omit in the east of our main field. The fourth cluster is located in the southernmost of our area and suspected caused by tectonic activity. Low Vp/Vs values near to the surface are observed in the north direction and coincide with the location of the first cluster. The location of anomaly is highly corresponded with the production area and the low value of Vp/Vs anomaly is interpreted as the steam zone. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Tangkuban Perahu and nearby volcano-hosted geothermal prospects are believed to be important for future power generation in West Java, Indonesia. Recharge areas of these prospects and geothermal fluid evolution are not yet fully understood. The objectives of this investigation are to describe the fluid origin, processes, and evolution of geothermal fluids in relation to the recharge and the conceptual model of the Tangkuban Perahu Geothermal Systems (TPGS). The investigation involved sampling and analysis of geothermal waters, rainwater, and gases collected in fumaroles and other manifestations around the TPGS. Isotopic results of δ18O and δ2H collected from thermal and rainwater indicate deep-circulating meteoric origin, at an infiltration altitude ranges between 753-850 m in low terrain. Meanwhile, the high-standing terrain indicates the recharge zone to be within the wall of the Sunda Caldera and mountain slopes. Chondrite normalized patterns reveal an overall flat trendline that suggests the enrichment of Lower Rare Earth Elements (LREEs) in the central part of Tangkuban Perahu which is derived from the magmatic influx. The non-atmospheric gases origin was diagnosed by the lower N2/Ar (≤ 38) and is characterized of meteoric origin. The positive δ18O shifts from Ciater (CT), Batu Gede (BG), and Domas crater (KwD) geothermal waters samples comparatively to local meteoric lines are influenced by the interaction with wall rocks or magmatic influx. In these geothermal systems, the meteoric water infiltrated to the depth is heated, mixed with near-surface water, and followed by partial discharge as thermal springs along faults. © 2022, The Authors. Krakatau is one of the volcano in Indonesia which has the destructive paroxysmal eruption. Eruption on 1883 was estimated had VEI of 6. The eruption was recorded as one among some most violent volcanic eruption event in the world. Gravity method is one of the geophysical methods that could delineate the subsurface structure base on density variation. Therefore, the objectives of this research are to reconstruct the 3D subsurface structure of the Krakatau volcano especially the approximate location and dimension of the magma chamber. The subsurface model of Krakatau was done by 3D modelling using residual anomaly map. In order to develop the status of magma chamber model, the available information on the geological map of Krakatau and surrounding area was used. Besides that, some information relative to the volcano such as the information derived from earthquake wave attenuation were utilized. The result of the study shows that position its volcano magma chamber is not directly vertical or oblique under the volcano crater and it has multiple chambers which trending northwest-southeast. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. Mathematics is a topic very important to achieve success during education and for life. In this way, the factors that could influence on mathematics learning, from the point of the view of parents, were analyzed. The approach used in this study was the grey clustering method, which is based on the grey systems theory. The case study was conducted in Lima, Peru. The sample of parents was obtained at the final stage of national competition of mathematics, commonly called CONAMAT, carried out after of previous stages of classification. The parents were divided in two groups, primary education parents and secondary education parents. The results revealed that the factor more important that influenced on the preference from students for mathematics learning were the vocation from students to sciences and the motivation from students to mathematics. The results of this study could help to mathematics teacher or educational authorities from Peru to make the best decision on mathematics teaching and learning. Moreover, the grey clustering method showed its effectiveness during the application on the case study, and it could be applied to other studies from social sciences or educational sciences, as the grey clustering method considers the uncertainty within its analysis. © 2019 IEEE.

Java Island is highly active tectonic zone and also has a complex geological system as a result of Indo-Australian plate that subducted under the Eurasian plate. This complexity produces many large and destructive earthquakes. Moreover, Java is a most densely populated region in Indonesia. The precise earthquake location can define and evaluate the seismic hazard in the area. In this study, we determined hypocenter location around the central and east Java region by using a non-linear method. We manually picked P-and S-wave arrival time recorded by BMKG network for the time period of 2009 to 2017. We used the minimum 1D seismic velocity model of ak135 to locate the events. We used some criteria for the determination of event location including (i) at least recorded by 4 station which has clear onset P and S arrival, and (ii) has magnitude (MW) > 3. The seismicity in the study area is controlled by subduction and many active faults distributed along the Java Island, also clustered in several areas such as Kendeng thrust, Opak river fault, Kebumen, Banyuwangi, and others. The result of this study indicates the accurately main shallow seismicity zones in central and eastern part of Java region, and also confirm the presence of active inland faults. As further studies, we will conduct 1D velocity modeling and relocate the hypocenters using an updated local 1D velocity model beneath the study area. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.
