Thermodynamics properties and combustion performance investigation of higher chain alcohol-RON 92 gasoline system

The increasing consumption of fossil fuel in Indonesia is not followed by the rising on domestic oil production. This will lead to the depletion of fossil fuel reserves that will affect the availability of energy resources. Biofuel is considered as the critical solution to solve this problem in Indonesia. In recent years, alcohol produced from biomass has been used as an oxygenated compound in gasoline to increase the octane number and reduce pollutants resulting from motor vehicle exhaust emissions. However, the use of alcohol as an additive compounds is still limited to ethanol. In fact, the use of higher-chain alcohol such as 1-butanol offers more benefits over ethanol due to its higher calorific value. 1-butanol also has good characteristics for gasoline mixture such as less corrosive than ethanol, more resistant to water contamination, its low vapor pressure which leads to more safety application. This work investigated the effect of 1-butanol addition on the thermodynamic properties of gasoline-ethanol blend, in the form of density values, isobaric expansion coefficient, and the calorific value. The addition of 1-butanol up to 15% weight (80% RON 92-5% ethanol-15% 1-butanol) gives higher density to alcohol-gasoline blend up to 2% compared with pure RON 92 gasoline. Moreover, this addition produces the calorific value of gasoline blend of 11,313 cal/gr compared to pure RON 92 gasoline with the calorific value of 12,117 cal/gram. This blend can reduce the RON 92 gasoline consumption up to 15% from calorific value perspective.

This research discusses the testing and analysis of cracking Aluminum (Al) material. Al as a handle lever was used for a braking device on a motor vehicle. Cracking of handle lever due to the part content of porosity from hydrogen gas. The existence of the H2 can be caused by the casting process and dies design that is less perfect, especially at the gate or brisket and overflow. This research is to optimize the process of making Al part handle lever, and the construction dies by following the standard. The results of these improvements were reevaluated through the chemical and mechanical testing properties stages, such as density test and tensile test on the workpiece as part handle lever. The loads on the tensile test are 25 kg and 35 kg, and the tensile test result has met the standard set by the motor vehicle company. The optimization result has the porosity defect can be reduced by 99 %. Therefore the best part handle lever can be produced.

Formation of Mount Loyang: Easternmost scoria cone of Slamet stratovolcano, Central Java, Indonesia

Scoria cones commonly occur in the lower flank of stratovolcano close to the populated area. This close spatial relationship increases hazardous risk of direct impact of volcanic activities to the people. Therefore, it is necessary to gain more understanding to the formation of scoria cone to better assess the volcanic hazards. We studied Mount Loyang, the furthest scoria cone of Slamet volcano, approximately 14 km from the recent active crater. Quarrying to this scoria cone enables us to observe the interior structure towards the surface as represented by its volcanic rocks sequence. The sequences include 61 layers of voluminous ash and lapilli deposits resembling simultaneous scoria cone formation which attributed with lava effusion on the lower part of the cone. Chemical compositions were gained through ICP-MS-AES analysis including major and 13 trace elements for 17 representative samples yields typical basaltic compositions of SiO2 46.1 to 50.7 wt.% and MgO 5.9 to 7.5 wt.%. Median grain size (MdΦ) and sortation coefficient (δΦ) of −0.4 to −1.85 and 1.025 to 2.35, respectively, suggested for Hawaiian to Strombolian eruption type. In detailed, initial stage composed of bomb rich (size range 10 to 30 cm) embedded in ash materials (Φ scale −2) typical of opening vent stage. Average grain size shows general coarsening upward trend (Φ scale −3 to −5) and suggest for increasing explosive eruptive style. In the late stage, pyroclastic surge deposit typical of phreatomagmatic eruptive style started occur implying for the transition from dry to wet environment. The external water influence might triggered more explosive eruptive style once there is new magma ascend to the surface. We suggest that such eruptive style through a scoria cone need to be integrated into the hazard assessment of a potentially active volcanic area such as that in Slamet volcano.

The process of continuous landfill in the area of the final disposal (landfill) of waste produces pollutants such as leachate (leachate) is a liquid containing dissolved substances and suspended very fine as a result of waste decomposition by microbes. Leachate water contains decomposing organic materials and heavy metal materials. Heavy metals (Cr, Hg, Pb, Cu, Fe, Mn, Zl, Cl) present in leachate water are from waste that has been disposed to TPA Keudah Kota Banda Aceh. The author would like to do research on the adsorption of heavy metals by using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer in landfill leachate Banda Aceh. The purpose of this research is to get the absorption of some heavy metals in the landfill leachate by using AAS analysis method. The results of the analysis in landfill leachate solution Banda Aceh by using Atomic Adsorption Spectrohotometer its highest uptake in heavy metal parameters Iron (Fe) amounted to 10.9191 ppm, and is followed by the parameters of heavy metals (Ni) 0.9820 ppm, ( Zn) 0.4188 ppm, (Co) 0.1698, (Cu) 0.1198 ppm, (Pb) 0.0602 ppm, (Cr) 0.0502 ppm, (Hg), and (Cu) Cd) the results are not detected (ND). Considering that Indonesia in the future is still faced with environmental pollution problem as a result of the development, the restoration and rehabilitation of contaminated land needs to get mutual attention, such as by using dilution method, stabilization, and phytoremdiation technique.

Redesigning the work system of rubber industries based on total ergonomics and ergo-micmac integration

The factory capacity achievement and the bottleneck reduction of production process at wet-blanket workstations are influenced by the balance of life quality rates and worker's productivity, along with the worker's ability and limitations, tasks, organization and work environment. The life quality of workers is indicated by: the reduction of workload, and fatigue. Meanwhile, work productivity is measured by increasing production results per work shift. The optimization of the quality of life and productivity of workers is achieved by redesigning the system and workstations based on ergonomics integrating Total Ergonomics with Ergo-MicMac (Micro Ergonomics and Macro Ergonomics), which includes redesigning wet-blanket folding worktable, regulating the system pattern of working in pairs, giving official break time, giving extra nutritious intakes such as sweet tea and snack Pempek, giving personal protective equipments, and redesigning physical working *** study was an experimental study, with treatment by subject design involving 30 workers sampled at a workstation condition before and after Ergonomics based redesign. The findings and conclusions of the study were derived from the reduction of the workload by 16.06%, fatigue by 18.84% and the increase of production results per work shift by 20.29%.

Topographic map analysis to determine Arjuno-Welirang volcanostratigraphy and implication for geothermal exploration

Volcanostratigraphy study is used for supporting geothermal exploration on preliminary survey. This study is important to identify volcanic eruption center which shows potential area of geothermal heat source. The purpose of volcanostratigraphy study in research area is going to distinguish the characteristics of volcanic eruption product that construct the volcanic body. The analysis of Arjuno-Welirang volcanostratigraphy identification are based on topographic maps of Malang sheet with 1:100.000 scale, 1:50.000 scale, and a geological map. Regarding to the delineation of ridge and river, we determine five crowns, three hummocks, one brigade and one super brigade. The crowns consist of Ringgit, Welirang, Arjuno, Kawi, and Penanggungan, the hummocks comprise of Kembar III, Kembar II, and Kembar I, the brigade is Arjuno-Welirang, and the super brigade is Tengger. Based on topographic map interpretation and geothermal prospect evaluation method analysis, shows that Arjuno-Welirang prospect area have good geothermal resource potential.

Steam and Brine Zone Prediction around Geothermal Reservoir Derived from Delay Time Seismic Tomography and Anisotropy Case study: 'PR' Geothermal Field

Development of geothermal production can be conducted in several ways, one of them analyses the fracture or crack and structure within the reservoir. Due to low permeability and porosity value within the reservoir in geothermal field. This crack or fracture provide porosity for fluid storage and permeability for fluid movement and play a major role in production from this kind of reservoir. Structure and polarization direction can be derived from anisotropy parameter and seismic velocity parameter in geothermal field. In this study, we used micro-earthquake data of 1,067 events that were recorded by the average of 15 stations during almost 1-year measurement. We used anisotropy parameter using 3-D shear-wave splitting (SWS) tomography method to represent the distribution of anisotropy medium around the geothermal field. Two parameters produced from the S-wave analysis, which is polarization direction and delay time between fast S-wave and slow S-wave. To determine SWS parameters, we used a rotation of horizontal seismogram including N-S component and E-W component. Furthermore, we used short-time fourier transform (STFT) to calculate lag time and time window based on wave periods. Two horizontal components have been rotated from azimuth 0° to 180° with an increment of 1°. Cross-correlation coefficient used every azimuth of two horizontal components based on delay time with predetermined time window obtained by STFT. When cross-correlation coefficient is high, the corresponding value of delay time and azimuth are chosen as the polarization direction and delay time of SWS. Normalized time different divided by total ray length was used to determine the distribution of crack density. Through correlation of seismic velocity model, crack density, and 3-D anisotropy tomography, we can delineate a geothermal reservoir model. Our results show, high degree of anisotropy and crack density occur in the northern and eastern part of 'PR' geothermal field for further development.

Petrological and geochemical characteristics of pumiceous tephra deposit from Slamet stratovolcano, Central Java, Indonesia: Explosive period of the most differentiated magma of a basaltic stratovolcano

We reported detailed investigation of the pumiceous deposits reside in the western part of Slamet Volcano that are found as both primary and secondary product. Pyroclastic fall, flow and surge deposits represent those of the primary products, whereas lahar and fluvial deposits represent those of the secondary products. The tephra fall deposits are separated by pyroclastic flow and surge deposits as typical of sub-plinian to plinian eruption type. The secondary deposits of fluvial deposits occurred in between the primary deposits indicating repose time of the explosive events, whereas lahar deposits occurred as the youngest deposits concluding these pumiceous events. Petrographic observation show that pumice deposit is extremely vesicular with various bubble sizes, vitrophyric in texture, and contains subhedral phenocryst of plagioclase, orthopyroxene, clinopyroxene, opaque mineral and minor biotite. Chemical compositions of major and trace elements were obtained using ICP-MS-AES. SiO2 range from 58,7 to 63,9 wt.% and classified as andesite to dacite with LOI number range from -0,04 to 3,06. Ratios of incompatible elements (e.g. Ba/Zr, Rb/Zr, Zr/Nb, and Hf/Nb) consistently separate rocks of Old and Young Slamet. In these ratios, pumiceous samples are plotted within the range of Young Slamet implying for genetic relationship. These explosive events are “unique” considering typical recent basaltic activities of Slamet volcano and need to be carefully considered in the volcanic hazard mitigation.

Geothermal system boundary at the northern edge of Patuha Geothermal Field based on integrated study of volcanostratigraphy, geological field mapping, and cool springs contamination by thermal fluids

Patuha Geothermal System is a volcanic hydrothermal system. In this type of system, the boundary of the system is often determined by low resistivity (10 ohm.m) anomaly from Magnetotelluric (MT) or DC-Resistivity survey. On the contrary, during geothermal exploration, the system boundary often need to be determined as early as possible even prior of resistivity data available. Thus, a method that use early stage survey data must be developed properly to reduce the uncertainty of the geothermal area extent delineation at the time the geophysical data unavailable. Geological field mapping, volcanostratigraphy analysis and fluid chemistry of thermal water and cold water are the data available at the early stage of exploration. This study integrates this data to delineate the geothermal system boundary. The geological mapping and volcanostratigraphy are constructed to limit the extent of thermal and cold springs. It results that springs in the study area are controlled hydrologically by topography of Patuha Volcanic Crown (complex) or so called PVC, the current geothermal field and Masigit Volcanic Crown (complex) or so called MVC, the dormant volcano not associated with active geothermal system. Some of the cold springs at PVC are contaminated by subsurface steam heated outflow while others are not contaminated. The contaminated cold springs have several characteristics such as higher water temperature than ambient temperature at the time it was measured, higher total disolved solid (TDS), and lower pH. The soluble elements analysis support the early contamination indication by showing higher cation and anion, and positive oxygen shifting of stable isotope of these cool springs. Where as the uncontaminated spring shows similar characteristic with cool springs occur at MVC. The boundary of the system is delineated by an arbitrary line drawn between distal thermal springs from the upflow or contaminated cool springs with the cool uncontaminated springs. This boundary is
