Improved Location of Microseismic Events in Borehole Monitoring by Inclusion of Particle Motion Analysis: a Case study at a CBM Field in Indonesia

Microseismic monitoring and constraining its hypocenters in and around hydrocarbon reservoirs provides insight into induced deformation related to hydraulic fracturing. In this study, we used data from a single vertical array of sensors in a borehole, providing measures of arrival times and polarizations. Microseismic events are located using 1-D velocity models and arrival times of P- and S-waves. However, in the case of all the sensors being deployed in a near-vertical borehole, there is a high ambiguity in the source location. Herein, we applied a procedure using azimuth of P-wave particle motion to constrain and improve the source location. We used a dataset acquired during 1-day of fracture stimulation at a CBM field in Indonesia. We applied five steps of location procedure to investigate microseismic events induced by these hydraulic fracturing activities. First, arrival times for 1584 candidate events were manually picked. Then we refined the arrival times using energy ratio method to obtain high consistency picking. Using these arrival times, we estimated back-azimuth using P-wave polarization analysis. We also added the combination of polarities analysis to remove 180° ambiguity. In the end, we determined hypocenter locations using grid-search method that guided in the back-azimuth trace area to minimize the misfit function of arrival times. We have successfully removed the ambiguity and produced a good solution for hypocenter locations as indicated statistically by small RMS. Most of the events clusters highlight coherent structures around the treatment well site and revealed faults. The same procedure can be applied to various other cases such as microseismic monitoring in the field of geothermal and shale gas/oil exploration, also CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) development.

Ferrogel is a smart material that combines the elastic properties of hydrogel and magnetic behavior from the filler of magnetic materials. In this work, ferrogel was fabricated through a freezing-thawing process with matrix materials of Carboxyl Methyl Cellulose (CMC)/Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) and a filler of magnetite. Magnetite nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by using a coprecipitation method at room temperature. The magnetite filler was investigated via X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), respectively, to analyze the structure and morphology of the magnetite. Based on the XRD analysis, the magnetite nanoparticle was matched by ICSD number of 9013529 and has an average particle size of about ~ 9.67 nm. This result is well confirmed by the TEM characterization that showed an average particle size of 9.32 nm. Furthermore, ferrogel was explored by using a Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) and an electromagnetic instrument to measure the magnetic properties and deformation of ferrogel, respectively. The VSM analysis showed that CMC/PVA hydrogel-based ferrogel has a superparamagnetic behavior due to its magnetization remanent and field coercivity that is close to zero. Interestingly, the deflection of Fe3O4/CMC/PVA ferrogel under the effect of the external magnetic field exhibited a good response. The deformation of ferrogel significantly increased from 4.9 cm to 7.0 cm as the filler of magnetite in the ferrogel was increasing from 14 wt% to 22 wt%. This phenomenon could be improved and explored to change the ferrogel into an artificial muscle by engineering the concentration and magnetite response in the CMC/PVA hydrogel.

Mitigation of landslide area around railway tunnel, South Sumatra Province, Indonesia

Adequate and safe railway line infrastructures as well as facilities are required to support the rail transport system in South Sumatra. The slope stability along railway line of Lahat-Lubuk Linggau South Sumatra were studied during landslide that occured on January 23th, 2016. The landslide occurred on the mouth of railway tunnel in Gunung Gajah Village, Lahat District that causing the railway transportation system had to be stopped for a few days. A comprehensive research was conducted to analyze the causes of the landslide and to identify other landslide risky areas along the railway line Lahat-Lubuk Linggau. The research activities included surveying, sampling, laboratory testing, investigating condition of geology, geotechnics, hydrogeology/hydrology, morphology and land use. The factors that cause landslide in the past studies were found to be morphology, structural geology, physical and mechanical characteristics, hydrogeology, hydrology, external forces (train vibration, earthquake). Results back analysis of slope stability when the landslide occurred showed that the value Safety Factor (SF) = 1, angle of friction = 0°, and cohesion = 0.49 kg/cm2 (49 kPa). Based on the observation and analysis of the condition of the morphology and orientation of the structure of the rock layers, there was a location prone to landslide (labile) in the surrounding area of the landslide. Mitigations to potential landslide in adjacent area were building a retaining wall, draining channels, and shortcrete at the rock wall after landslides and maintaining the land use around the slopes.

Chronic care manages long-term, progressive conditions, while acute care addresses short-term conditions. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Approximately 68% of DALYs were attributed to chronic care, while 27% were due to acute care. Chronic care needs increased with age, representing 86% of YLDs and 71% of YLLs, and accounting for 93% of YLDs from sequelae. These findings highlight that chronic care needs far exceed acute care needs globally, necessitating health systems to adapt accordingly. © 2025. The Author(s).

Contribution of student involvement in production/service unit and experience of industry practices to entrepreneurial attitude and the impact entrepeneurship readiness of vocational high school students of great Malang

Purpose of this research was to determine the contribution of student involvement in production/ service unit (X1), experience of industry practices (X2), and entrepreneurial attitude (Y) towards readiness entrepreneurship (Z) of vocational student regional Malang. The design of the study using a quantitative approach. The samples used as many as 130 respondents. Instruments used for collecting data in the form of questionnaires. Data analysis included descriptive and test of hypothesis. The result showed: that the description of data on the level of student involvement in production/ service unit, experience of industry practices, entrepreneurial attitude and entrepreneurship readiness in the high category. The contribution student involvement in production/ service unit of entrepreneurial attitude of 10.6%. The contribution experience of industry practices of entrepreneurial attitude of 17.4%. The contribution student involvement in production/ service unit and experience of industry practices simultaneously to entrepreneurial attitude of 44.1%. The contribution student involvement in production/ service unit of readiness entrepreneurship of 4%. The contribution experience of industry practices of readiness entrepreneurship of 5%. The contribution entrepreneurial attitude of readiness entrepreneurship of 16%. Finally, the contribution student involvement in production/ service unit, experience of industry practices, and entrepreneurial attitude simultaneously to readiness entrepreneurship of 50.3%.

In the transitional mass range (∼ 8-10 solar masses) between white dwarf formation and iron core-collapse supernovae, stars are expected to produce an electron-capture supernova. Theoretically, these progenitors are thought to be super-asymptotic giant branch stars with a degenerate O+Ne+Mg core, and electron capture onto Ne and Mg nuclei should initiate core collapse1,2,3,4. However, no supernovae have unequivocally been identified from an electron-capture origin, partly because of uncertainty in theoretical predictions. Here we present six indicators of electron-capture supernovae and show that supernova 2018zd is the only known supernova having strong evidence for or consistent with all six: progenitor identification, circumstellar material, chemical composition5,6,7, explosion energy, light curve, and nucleosynthesis8,9,10,11,12. For supernova 2018zd, we infer a super-asymptotic giant branch progenitor based on the faint candidate in the pre-explosion images and the chemically-enriched circumstellar material revealed by the early ultraviolet colours and flash spectroscopy. The light-curve morphology and nebular emission lines can be explained by the low explosion energy and neutron-rich nucleosynthesis produced in an electron-capture supernova. This identification provides insights into the complex stellar evolution, supernova physics, cosmic nucleosynthesis, and remnant populations in the transitional mass range. Water absorption and its effect on the tensile properties of tapioca starch/polyvinyl alcohol bioplastics

Tapioca is one of the largest sources of starch and makes it suitable to be used for bioplastic material. Addition of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been shown to successfully reduce the brittleness of starch bioplastic. This study aims to investigate the influence of PVA addition to water absorption behavior and its effect on the tensile properties of tapioca starch/PVA bioplastics, which are still not yet fully understood until now. The bioplastics were prepared by solution casting method at gelatinization temperature, with PVA addition from 0 to 29 wt%. Examinations were carried out by means of water absorption test, tensile test and Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy. Increasing content of PVA, up to 29 wt%, was found to decrease the water absorption of the bioplastics, with the lowest water saturation point of 251%. This is due to the interaction between starch and PVA which reduces the free OH groups in the resulting bioplastics. Consequently, this led to a decrease in water absorption-related deterioration, i.e. tensile properties degradation of the bioplastics. The addition of 29 wt% resulted into the lowest degradation in tensile strength (6%) and stiffness (30%), while accompanied with the highest elongation increase (39%) after water immersion.

Ambient Noise Tomography of Merapi Complex, Central Java, Indonesia: A Preliminary Result

Mt. Merapi is one of the most active and hazardous volcanoes not only in Indonesia but also in the world. Having a height of about 2968 meter above sea level it contains an active lava dome, which regularly produces pyroclastic flows and is categorized as a stratovolcano. It erupts on average every 2-5 years, in which thousands of people live on the flanks of the volcano. The last eruption occurred on 26 October 2010 and after the large eruption in 2010 the characteristic of Mt. Merapi was changed. Due to its uniqueness, Merapi is closely monitored by the many geoscientists, particularly through volcanological *** study is concerned with the application of ambient noise tomography (ANT) to create Rayleigh wave group velocity maps around Mt. Merapi. The continuous data set is taken from the DOMERAPI project, which consists of temporary seismic array of 40 broadband seismometers for approximately ten months. The resulting group velocity maps of Rayleigh wave show an anomaly pattern that agrees with previous geological and geophysical study results. A pronounced, positive anomaly is clearly imaged with direction about 152°N beneath Mt. Merapi through to Mt. Merbabu. In addition, negative anomalies are observed in its east and west flanks.

Analysis of Power Generating Speed Bumps Made of Concrete Foam Composite

This paper discusses the analysis of speed bump made of concrete foam composite which is used to generate electrical power. Speed bumps are designed to decelerate the speed of vehicles before passing through toll gates, public areas, or any other safety purposes. In Indonesia a speed bump should be designed in the accordance with KM Menhub 3 year 1994. In this research, the speed bump was manufactured with dimensions and geometry comply to the regulation mentioned above. Concrete foam composite speed bumps were used due to its light weight and relatively strong to receive vertical forces from the tyres of vehicles passing over the bumps. The reinforcement materials are processed from empty fruit bunch of oil palm. The materials were subjected to various tests to obtain its physical and mechanical properties. To analyze the structure stability of the speed bumps some models were analyzed using a FEM-based numerical softwares. It was obtained that the speed bumps coupled with polymeric composite bar (3 inches in diameter) are significantly reduce the radial stresses. In addition, the speed bumps equipped with polymeric composite casing or steel casing are also suitable for use as part of system components in producing electrical energy.
