This case report investigates the preventive effect of Tinospora cordifolia extract on biocorrosion induced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa on mild steel API 5L in the simulated seawater medium. Electrochemical techniques, spectroscopic techniques, and surface analysis were employed to investigate biocide performance and corrosion behavior. P. aeruginosa has been shown to enhance iron dissolution in seawater medium. These findings point to the role of P. aeruginosa bacteria in forming differential oxygen, which causes corrosion. Morphology results from atomic Fourier microscopy (AFM) highlight the presence of P. aeruginosa in biotic environments, where the surface is rougher than in abiotic conditions. On the other hand, adding T. cordifolia to the biotic medium resulted in a smoother and more homogeneous surface without any significant deterioration. Electrochemical findings reveal that adding 300 mg L⁻¹ of T. cordifolia extract prevents the microbiologically influenced corrosion (MIC) of steel API 5L, with an optimum effectiveness value of 74.50 % after 21 days of incubation. This protective effect is caused by forming a more compact iron oxide surface layer and the adsorption of phenolic active compounds such as Moupinamide and others on the surface of mild steel API 5L, as detected by liquid chromatography-mass/spectrometry-mass spectrometry (LCMS-MS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) techniques. © 2024 The Authors

On January 23rd 2016 there was a landslide in the Lahat-Lubuk Linggau railway, right at the mouth of the railway tunnel in Lahat Regency. About 5 meters thick of soil covered the railway, causing the railway to be stopped for several days. Since the tunnel was built in 1928 until landslides occur in 2016 which means it has been 88 years. The landslide can be caused by several factors, these factors are slope geometry, physical and mechanical characteristics of rocks or soil, geological structure, hydrology and hydrogeology, and external forces such as ground vibration due to railway traffic and earthquake. The results of research on the main causes of landslides in the mouth of the railway tunnel include relatively steep morphological influences, degradation of rock strength due to weathering, dip rock structure in the direction of slope, and ground vibration due to earthquakes. Based on field observations, the slope next to the case study area of the landslide is also unstable. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the slope stability in the area that has the potential to landslide, using a pseudo-static slope stability analysis on the consideration of the effect of ground vibration due to earthquakes is quite significant to slope stability. The results of the pseudo-static slope stability analysis is showing out that the factor of safety is around 1.22-1.16 with a seismic coefficient of 0.10-0.125 g. To anticipate future landslide we suggest to be conducted studies on slope stabilization methods including building retaining walls, drainage channels and shotcrete walls. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd.

Background: There would be over 600 million people living with diabetes by 2040 as predicted by the World Health Organization. Diabetes is characterized by raised blood sugar and insulin resistance. Insulin regulates the influx of glucose into the cell by upregulating the glucose transporter type 4 (GLUT4) expression on the plasma membrane. Besides, PPAR-γ also controls the metabolism of glucose in adipose tissues. Curcuma mangga Val., denoted as C. mangga, is a native Indonesian medicinal plant that has many beneficial effects, including an antidiabetic potential. Purpose: In this research, we aimed to disclose the hypoglycemic activity of ethanol extract of C. mangga (EECM) in 3T3-L1 fibroblasts-derived adipocyte cells in regulating glucose uptake as confirmed by the GLUT4 and PPAR-γ gene expression. Methods: The uptake of glucose was determined using radioactive glucose, while the gene expression of GLUT4, PPAR-γ, and β-actin was quantified using mRNA segregation and real-time quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Results: We discovered that EECM interventions (200 and 50 μg/mL) increased glucose uptake in lipid-laden 3T3-L1 cells by 14.75 and 8.86 fold compared to the control noninsulin, respectively (p < 0.05). At the same doses, they also increased GLUT4 mRNA expression by 8.41 and 11.18 fold compared to the control non-insulin, respectively (p < 0.05). In contrast, EECM interventions (200 and 50 μg/mL) showed lower levels of PPAR-γ mRNA expression compared to the control metformin, indicating the anti-adipogenic potentials of EECM. Conclusion: EECM showed hypoglycemic activity in lipid-laden 3T3-L1 cells by improving glucose ingestion into the cells, which was mediated by increased GLUT4 expression and downregulated PPAR-γ expression. © 2020 Pujimulyani et al.

We observed 754 microearthquake data by at least 15 stations for six months as a tool to monitor and characterize the subsurface condition in two-phase geothermal field in Southern Bandung. The data were reduced to 417 events having azimuthal gap less than 180°. We determine the initial earthquake locations in this study by using Geiger method and we update the hypocenter locations by performing simultaneous inversion for hypocenters and 1D velocity structure followed by 3D tomographic inversion. We obtained the velocity structure by utilizing TomoDD to perform 3D tomographic inversion. There are four clusters of seismicity observed in this study which we suspected related to the injection, production, and tectonic activity of the study area. The southern cluster is consistent with the location of injection wells and spread from 1 km depth to 8 km depth, indicating that MEQ events were triggered by injection activity. The production area is characterized by a denser population of events and the events were distributed closely ranging from 1 to 3 km depth. We suspect that the third cluster is caused by development activity of steam dominated geothermal field omit in the east of our main field. The fourth cluster is located in the southernmost of our area and suspected caused by tectonic activity. Low Vp/Vs values near to the surface are observed in the north direction and coincide with the location of the first cluster. The location of anomaly is highly corresponded with the production area and the low value of Vp/Vs anomaly is interpreted as the steam zone. © 2019 IOP Publishing Ltd. All rights reserved.

Design ethnomathematics mobile module to improve mathematics thinking ability

The aims of this study are (1) analyzing the need for teaching materials in the form of mobile modules in mathematics learning; (2) produce a draft outline of the ethnomathematics mobile module. The subjects of this study were the principal, mathematics teacher, seventh-grade students of Junior High School in Kudus, Indonesia. Data obtained from literature studies and field surveys include questionnaires, interviews, and FGD. The data analysis technique used is data triangulation with stages: reduction, data presentation, and conclusions based on data descriptions. The results showed that (1) students’ mathematical thinking skills are still low, teachers have not used application-based media, teachers have not developed ethnomathematical-based media, students need learning media that can improve mathematical thinking skills and make students interested in learning mathematics; (2) the ethnomathematics component of the mobile module is divided into 3 main parts, namely the introduction, the core, and the end. The introductory section includes the initial login page, instructions for use, and information regarding basic competencies. The core section contains the content of learning activities that contain ASEP (apperception), JAYA (cultural bridge), SITI (material description), EDI (self-evaluation). The last part contains motivational sentences.

Mini-Review: The potential of raffinose as a prebiotic

Prebiotics are dietary fiber components that cannot be digested by the human gastrointestinal tract but can be selectively fermented by bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, prebiotics provides health effects for humans. The specificity of prebiotics is determined by the bacteria that are specifically capable of fermenting the prebiotic substrate. The characteristics of prebiotic substrate need to be investigated in-vitro and in-vivo to determine the function and effectiveness of the substrate as a prebiotic. The prebiotic production process must be able to keep the prebiotic components stable. Raffinose is an oligosaccharide that has potential as a prebiotic. This article will discuss raffinose chemical structure, degrading enzymes, and health benefits as a prebiotic. Raffinose consists of 3 monomers, namely α-D-galactose, α-D-glucose, and α-D-fructose. Substrates containing raffinose-family oligosaccharides (RFOs) are the source of raffinose. Those substrates can be degraded to raffinose by the α-1,6-galactosidase. Raffinose can increase the growth of lactic acid bacteria, suppress the growth of pathogenic bacteria, increase short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), reduce constipation, inhibit the formation of putrefactive compounds from protein, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Application of green architecture concepts in Wanakota apartments

The shrinking land in urban areas and the worsening world climate crisis have created a new residential development problem. One way to maximize land designated for residential use is to build vertical housing, such as constructing flats and apartments that can accommodate more residents in a limited area. However, it also creates new problems because the use of energy required for a building will be extensive. The application of Green Architecture is an effort to reduce energy use for buildings and reduce the negative impact of buildings on the environment. one helpful reference is applying green architectural concepts. The apartment Wanakota is designed using the green building concept with the Indonesian Green Building Council (GBCI). Wanaka means City Forest, and trees inspire this name as trees. This tree is not only an aesthetic enhancer but as a CO2 absorber and oxygen supplier in the environment.

The effects of fermentation duration on chemical properties, physical properties, and organoleptic of Butterfly Pea Kombucha

Kombucha tea is a traditional fermented beverage product of tea and sugar solution using kombucha starter culture (Acetobacter xylinum and some types of yeast) that has some health effects, among others, as an antioxidant, antibacterial, endurance improvement, and others. This study aimed to determine the impact of time fermentation on the chemical properties (capacity of antioxidants, sugar content, alcohol content, and pH value), the physical properties (colour), and the organoleptic properties of butterfly pea kombucha tea. This research used explorative and descriptive methods. The treatment was fermentation time: 0-day, 3 days, 6 days and 9 days against chemical, physical, and organoleptic properties of the butterfly pea kombucha. The research design used the Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two repetitions for each treatment. The data were analyzed using ANOVA with a further DMRT test. This study showed that the duration of fermentation affects the antioxidant capacity, sugar content, pH and alcohol content, the colour's physical properties, and the organoleptic properties of butterfly pea kombucha. The results showed that 9 days of the time fermentation had the highest value of colour brightness (L) 20.3875, reddish (a+) 20.195, antioxidant of 42.77600 ppm, alcohol content 0.735% and had a taste organoleptic value of 3.98, and the colour hedonic score of 4.16. Meanwhile, 0-day fermentation had the highest value of a blue colour level (b-) of 2.76, the sugar content of 14.600 %, and had highest aroma organoleptic value of 3.9. A fermentation time of 9 days was not recommended for production.

Academic entrepreneurship is an activity that refers to researchers at universities who commercialize university research through business activities. Academic entrepreneurship can also be interpreted as a process of creating economic value through the creation, renewal, and organizational innovation that occurs inside and outside the university which results in the commercialization of research and technology transfer. The importance of academic entrepreneurship at the university level is directed to change the traditional view to a new view that sees Higher Education as an educational institution but is able to generate financial resources to cover operational costs. The purpose of this study is to analyze the extent to which academic research on entrepreneurship has been carried out. The research methodology used is literature review, by identifying entrepreneurship academic journals through the assistance of Scopus and Vosviewer. Based on the analysis, it was found that many journal publications on academic entrepreneurship were carried out in 2012. The research method used was mostly a qualitative method, with a literature review analysis. Then this type of paper is mostly in the Q1 quartile, countries that apply academic entrepreneurship a lot are the United States and England.

Simulation of arrow-shaped micromixer with obstacles in blood plasma mixing

In recent years, several applications of micromixers have been reported to have a number of advantages, including the use of small amounts of plasma, short reaction times, and good reaction efficiency. The samples analyzed in this study were blood plasma and distilled water. The process is carried out by passive mixing which is based on a microchannel structure to enhance the diffusion of molecules for efficient mixing. The arrow shape was chosen as the micromixer design because it has a better blending performance than the T and Y shapes. The types of obstacles also used to improve the mixing process. The simulation was carried out on COMSOL Multiphysics software version 5.6. The results showed better mixing results for the micromixer design with triangle right facing obstacles with the highest Reynolds number was 9.4326. Then followed by ellips obstacles with a value of 9.4322, then without obstacles that is 9.4309, after that the triangle left facing with a value of 9.4006, and finally the lowest Reynolds number is a design with a diamond obstacles of 9.2514.
