Evacuation control of Crowds of Pedestrians: Distributed or Decentralized? ⁎

Evacuation of crowds in a corridor with only one exit has been considered in this paper where distributed controllers have been constructed to regulate the crowd’s evacuation speed so that stampede tragedy can be avoided. Macroscopic model for crowds of pedestrians has been firstly derived based on inspiration of LWR (Lighthill-Whitham and Richards) model and Greenshields model from traffic system where finite volume method has been introduced to simplify the obtained PDEs into finite ODEs. Distributed evacuation controllers have been constructed based on inspiration of multi-agent system and stability analysis of obtained closed-loop system has been simplified to linear system with the delicate controllers proposed. Comparisons between distributed evacuation controllers and previous evacuation controllers have also been presented to show the advantages and disadvantages of different controllers under different initial density of crowds so that tragedy of crowd stampede can be effectively avoided with appropriate selection of different controllers.

Neuropathic pain has serious impacts on the quality of people's life. Diosgenin extracted from yams has shown significant potential in the treatment of nervous system diseases. To investigate the potential mechanism of diosgenin fighting against neuropathic pain, we established a chronic compression injury (CCI) model. The pain-related behaviors were determined by Von Frey, hot plate, and sciatic nerve index test. As a result, diosgenin significantly lowered the pain threshold, improved the sciatic nerve index, and decreased the damage of sciatic nerve structure in CCI model mice. It increased the protein levels of LC3-II and Beclin-1, the number of the lysosomes, decreased the protein level of P62 and the number of the autophagosomes, and therefore activated autophagy. Diosgenin also inhibited the proliferation of microglia cells and the translocation of NF-κB p65, while promoting promoted M2 polarization of microglia cells. Autophagy inhibitor like chloroquine inhibited the M2 polarization of microglia cells, and reversed the therapeutic effect of diosgenin. All in all, diosgenin alleviated neuropathic pain in CCI mice based on the enhancement of autophagy and the promotion of M2 polarization.

With the slowing growth of the telecommunication market and the intense competition for existing customers, Customer Churn Management has become a crucial task for all mobile network operators. Recommendation models based on customer behaviors are widely used by operators to provide diverse telecom tariff packages for suitable people and thus improve customer satisfaction. To address the low precision rate and data granularity of prior studies, this study combined rotation forest(ROF) and LightGBM and construct a hybrid algorithm(ROF-LGB). Grid search method was used in parameter tuning, and ten-fold crossvalidation method was used to prevent overfitting. Using mobile data generated by operators, ROF-LGB method was tested and compared with other five traditional machine learning *** results showed that ROF-LGB method achieved better performance with better precision rate and execution efficiency in telecom tariff package recommendation.

Aiming at satisfying the demand of electric power supply for small power secondary instrument of sewage and heating flowmeter, the study designed a small-sized impeller hydroelectric generating device without external lead wire or battery. The flow field of impeller hydroelectric power plant is analyzed by means of finite element analysis. The effects of wheelbase, impeller stages and blade number of single impeller on the efficiency of impeller plant are studied. The influence weights of blades number impeller stages and wheelbase on the efficiency of hydroelectric impeller are obtained, and the small structure of high efficiency and low loss hydropower generating device with impeller installed is proposed. © 2019 IEEE.

As a common choice strategy for consumers, variety-seeking has a direct impact on the business performance of enterprises, and has been studied for decades in management science and marketing research. Existing research tends to find factors which influence variety-seeking by means of questionnaires and lab.ratory experiments. Based on the important factors, marketers develop marketing plans which are tailored to consumers. However, due to personal motivation, the results of questionnaires and lab.ratory experiments may not fully reflect internal states of ***, we propose a data-driven framework, using ensemble learning for predicting variety-seeking behavior based on real student consumption data. Experiments demonstrate that our model outperforms separate machine learning algorithms and can effectively predict variety-seeking behavior. We further analyze the contribution of each feature towards the prediction, achieving some useful conclusions for the study of variety-seeking intervention mechanism.

Retrieving similar trajectories from a large trajectory dataset is important for a variety of applications, like transportation planning and mobility analysis. Unlike previous works based on fine-grained GPS trajectories, this paper investigates the feasibility of identifying similar trajectories from cellular data observed by mobile infrastructure, which provide more comprehensive coverage. To handle the large localization errors and low sample rates of cellular data, we develop a holistic system, cellSim, which seamlessly integrates map matching and similar trajectory search. A set of map matching techniques are proposed to transform cell tower sequences into moving trajectories on a road map by considering the unique features of cellular data, like the dynamic density of cell towers and bidirectional roads. To further improve the accuracy of similarity search, map matching outputs M trajectory candidates of different confidence, and a new similarity measure scheme is developed to process the map matching results. Meanwhile, M is dynamically adapted to maintain a low false positive rate of the similarity search, and two pruning schemes are proposed to minimize the computation overhead. Extensive experiments on a dataset of 3,186,000 mobile users and real-world trajectories of 1701 km reveal that cellSim provides high accuracy (precision 62.4% and recall of 89.8%). The increasing quantity of product returns has been one of the major problems faced by many businesses in online retailing. Besides the quality of products and other factors such as price, the inconsistency between promised delivery lead time (PDL) and actual realized lead time could increase product returns to some extent. Thus, this paper studies the impact of product returns on the business's joint decisions of PDL and service level when both demand and returns are leadtimesensitive. Through revealing the tradeoff among the shorter PDL to capture more demand, the higher service level or the longer PDL to decrease the probability of returns due to delay and the cost in online retailing, we show that the PDL is not affected by returns when the returns sensitivity to delay is relatively low and increases with returns while the delay sensitivity increases to a threshold. In addition, the threshold decreases in the return rate to demand, which means the impact of product returns would be more serious on the business with a high return rate with respect to demand.

A nanopositioning system of both millimetric stroke and nanometric tracking accuracy is a key component for nanofabrication in many applications. In this paper, a novel bi-axial beam-flexure nano servo stage is proposed to support a direct writing system for femtosecond laser nanofabrication. The important features of the stage lie in: a mirror symmetric instead of rotational symmetric configuration is adopted to restrict cross axis coupling, and a novel Z-shaped guidance module is proposed to achieve relative large linear stiffness range, in addition a redundant constraints module is introduced to increase off-axis stiffness of the stage. Mechanical analysis and system identification are provided, with which a feedback control algorithm demonstrates the tracking capability for laser fabrication purposes. Based on the fabricated XY nano-stage, real time control and measurements are deployed, demonstrating the millimetric operating workspace and 77.8 nm(RMS) error of tracking a circular trajectory.

In this study, the recall accuracies for different keys on a keyboard were studied and analyzed in a systematic way. It was found that alphabetic keys in the area of "Typing keys" resulted in relatively lower recall accuracies than "Function keys", "control keys" and "Numeric keys". Besides, there was an absence of significant association between the relative use frequency of English letters and their recall accuracies, confirming to the general expectation that typing tasks rely on the processing of implicit memory rather than explicit memory. Regarding the recall accuracies for numeric keys, participants had higher recall accuracy for the keys located in "Numeric keypad" than those in the "Typing key" area. This might be the result of experience transfer from their daily interaction with devices of similar layout (ATM). Some useful suggestions were provided for the design of a more user-friendly keyboard layout.

This paper studies the makespan minimisation scheduling problem in a two-stage hybrid flow shop. The first stage has one machine and the second stage hasmidentical parallel machines. Neither the processing time nor probability distribution of the processing time of each job is uncertain. We propose a robust (min–max regret) scheduling model. To solve the robust scheduling problem, which is NP-hard, we first derive some properties of the worst-case scenario for a given schedule. We then propose both exact and heuristic algorithms to solve this problem. In addition, computational experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms.
