Multiple-Disturbance Rejection for High Precision Positioning of a VCM Servo Gantry

This paper presents an multiple disturbance rejection approach for rejecting narrow-band disturbances as well as norm-bounded random disturbances, with applications to high precision positioning of a Voice Coil Motor (VCM) actuated servo stage. An adaptive optimal phase filter design method is proposed for the rejection of frequency-varying narrow-band disturbances at unknown frequency range. With a parallel connection of the proposed adaptive filter, a robust H ∞ controller can be synthesized with mixed sensitivity optimization for the purpose of both robust stability and rejection of norm-bounded random disturbances. The proposed control architecture is implemented to a VCM servo gantry to achieve high precision positioning in the presence of various disturbances.

The impact of consumer price forecasting behaviour on the bullwhip effect

As prices fluctuate over time, a strategic consumer may buy more in advance to reduce his or her future needs in anticipation of higher prices in the future, or may choose to postpone a purchase in anticipation of lower prices in the future. We investigate the bullwhip effect from a consumer price forecasting behavioural perspective in the context of a simple two-level supply chain composed of a supplier and a retailer. We consider two different forms for the demand function -- linear and iso-elastic demand functions, both depending on the prices in multiple periods. Assuming that the retailer employs an order-up-to inventory policy with exponential smoothing forecasting technology, we derive analytical expressions for the bullwhip effect under the two demand functions, and extend the results to the multiple-retailer case. We find that consumer forecasting behaviour can reduce the bullwhip effect, most significantly when the consumer sensitivity to price changes is medium (approximately 0.5) for both the demand forms. In addition, for iso-elastic demand, the mitigation of the bullwhip effect induced by consumer price forecasting behaviour becomes more significant as the product price sensitivity coefficient and standard deviation of the price decrease. These findings are applicable to the development of managerial strategies by supply chain members that are conducive to bullwhip effect reduction through customer behaviour.

Supply chain risk management (SCRM) has received increasing attention. However, our knowledge of how to manage supply chain risk is still limited. Although many scholars appeal that supply chains (SCs) should be cooperatively managed and information sharing should be used to reduce risks and invisibility in SCs. To the best of our knowledge, little empirical research exists concerning information sharing and supply chain risk. Specifically, based on an empirically study of 308 samples of Chinese manufacturers, we try to answer three questions: Does risk-related information sharing reduce supply chain risk? Does risk-related information sharing increase firm performance - operational performance, customer satisfaction, and financial performance? Does supply chain risk mediate the impact of riskrelated information sharing on firm performance? Structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to test the hypotheses. The results indicate that supply chain risk, operational performance, and customer satisfaction all benefit from riskrelated information sharing. Supply chain risk negatively relates to operational performance and customer satisfaction. Financial performance is positively related with operational performance and customer satisfaction, but there is no relationship between supply chain risk and financial performance.

This paper investigates the modeling and control problem of a novel piezoelectric-actuator(PZT) driven nanopositioner. The physical model of the nanopositioning stage is first discussed with the hysteresis nonlinearity of the PZT actuator. For the purposes of eliminating the hysteresis impact and various disturbances, an active disturbance rejection control(ADRC) algorithm is proposed, where the nonlinear dynamics of the model and external disturbances are treated as "total disturbances" which can be estimated by an extended state observer(ESO) and then compensated by a state feedback control law. The proposed algorithm is deployed in real time implementations on a nanopositioning servo platform and demonstrates good control performance in terms of high precision positioning and hysteresis elimination.

This paper presents an internal model-based approach for trajectory tracking in the discrete time-varying setting. A newly designed parallel kinematics servo gantry is well suited for high precision contouring at high speed ranges. The discrete time-varying internal model-based control is developed for controlling the servo gantry system to track complicated trajectories generated by linear time-varying systems. Based on a novel parallel time-varying internal model structure, a low order robust discrete time-varying stabilizer is synthesized. The proposed tracking control architecture is deployed on the novel parallel kinematics servo gantry system to achieve high precision contour tracking performance for frequency-varying signals generated by high order time-varying autonomous system.

Online routing of two vehicles to an emergency scene in grid transportation network

The online routing problem of two vehicles to an emergency scene is considered. In grid transportation network, some of the edges may be suddenly blocked and the blockage will not be observed until reaching an endpoint of the blocked edge. The goal is to minimize the arrival time of the first vehicle with at most k blockages. An online strategy named Row-first and Line-first is presented and the competitive ratio is analyzed, and the ratio is proved to be tight. The optimization of the online strategy in some situations is also proved.

This paper develops a new framework for the analysis of byproduct gas supply in iron and steel industry. Based on the online theory, this paper studies the online balance assignment problem of the byproduct gas. In the production process, the online decision maker makes decisions to balance the supply of byproduct gas in the online case. Under some reasonable assumptions, the paper constructs a balance assignment model of the byproduct gas to solve the balance range unknown problem. First, this researcher attempts to analyze the special nature of the offline case and the characteristics of the online case under different scenes. Then the paper designs an online balance strategy with a competitive ratio of (1+3M/m)/4 without the knowledge of supply interval. This study provides some ideas and theories for the balance assignment and use of the byproduct in manufacture industry.

This paper studies an integrated scheduling problem which consists of production and distribution stages. Jobs are processed on a parallel-batch machine in the production stage, and then transported to customers in the distribution stage. The aim is to find an integrated schedule in the two stages with the objective to optimize both total delivery time and total transportation cost. We focus on two models with either unbounded or bounded batch processing capacity in the production stage. In both models we assume sufficient vehicles each with infinite transportation capacity. For the unbounded model, we derive an O(g(n/g)2g) time dynamic programming algorithm where g ≥ 1 and n are the number of customers and jobs respectively. For the bounded model, we focus on a special case with m different processing times of jobs, and present an O(n323m) time algorithm. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2013.

In this paper we consider flow shop scheduling problems with a time-dependent learning effect. The time-dependent learning effect of a job on a machine is assumed to be a function of the total normal processing time of the jobs scheduled in front of the job on the machine. The objective is to minimize one of the five regular performance criteria namely, the total completion time, the makespan, the total weighted completion time, the total weighted discounted completion time, and the sum of the quadratic job completion times. We present heuristic algorithms by using the optimal permutations for the special cases of the corresponding single machine scheduling problems. We also analyze the worst-case bound of the proposed heuristic algorithms. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We introduce a model considering the single-leg revenue management problem from the perspective of online algorithms and competitive analysis. In this model, the price and limitation of bookings are both decision variables. Assuming the process of the customers meets the low-before-high manner and the expected value of customer falls in a closed interval, we analyze the upper bound for deterministic online joint pricing and booking policy and propose one optimal policy for each case. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.
