Emulsions comprising isotropic fluid drops within a nematic host are of interest for applications ranging from biodetection to smart windows, which rely on changes of molecular alignment structures around the drops in response to chemical, thermal, electric and other stimuli. We show that absorption or desorption of trace amounts of common surfactants can drive continuous transformations of elastic multipoles induced by the droplets within the uniformly aligned nematic host. Out-of-equilibrium dynamics of director structures emerge from a controlled self-assembly or desorption of different surfactants at the drop-nematic interfaces, with ensuing forward and reverse transformations between elastic dipoles, quadrupoles, octupoles and hexadecapoles. We characterize inter-transformations of droplet-induced surface and bulk defects, probe elastic pair interactions and discuss emergent prospects for fundamental science and applications of the reconfigurable nematic emulsions. © 2022, CC BY-NC-ND.

Augmented Reality technology is developing rapidly and has been widely used in the field of education. Due to the ease of developing AR by non-professionals, User Experience (UX) is often not considered in the application. Currently, there are no standard measurements of UX for AR applications especially in Education. The authors reviewed previous research to obtain UX references and the existing measurement standards. From the results of the review, the metrics were analyzed based on the characteristics of AR, especially in the field of education. The metrics will be recommended for the UX measurement of an AR application. The available standard metrics can be used to determine the UX quality of an AR application and contribute to the improvement of UX in AR applications, especially in the field of Education. © 2018 The Authors. With the improvement of living standards, user requirements of modern products are becoming increasingly more diversified and personalized. Traditional product design methods can no longer satisfy the market needs due to their strong subjectivity, small survey scope, poor real-time data, and lack of visual display, which calls for the development of big data driven product design methodology. Big data in the product lifecycle contains valuable information for guiding product design, such as customer preferences, market demands, product evaluation, and visual display: online product reviews reflect customer evaluations and requirements;product images contain information of shape,color, and texture which can inspire designers to get initial design schemes more quickly or even directly generate new product images. How to efficiently collect product design related data and exploit them effectively during the whole product design process is thus critical to modern product design. This paper aims to conduct a comprehensive survey on big data driven product design. It will help researchers and practitioners to comprehend the latest development of relevant studies and applications centered on how big data can be processed, analyzed, and exploited in aiding product design. We first introduce several representative traditional product design methods and highlight their limitations. Then we discuss current and potential applications of textual data, image data, audio data, and video data in product design cycles. Finally, major deficiencies of existing data driven product design studies and future research directions are summarized. Real-time, guaranteed safe trajectory planning is vital for navigation in unknown environments. However, real-time navigation algorithms typically sacrifice robustness for computation speed. Alternatively, provably safe trajectory planning tends to be too computationally intensive for real-time replanning. We propose FaSTrack, Fast and Safe Tracking, a framework that achieves both real-time replanning and guaranteed safety. In this framework, real-time computation is achieved by allowing any trajectory planner to use a simplified planning model of the system. The plan is tracked by the system, represented by a more realistic, higher dimensional tracking model. We precompute the tracking error bound (TEB) due to mismatch between the two models and due to external disturbances. We also obtain the corresponding tracking controller used to stay within the TEB. The precomputation does not require prior knowledge of the environment. We demonstrate FaSTrack using Hamilton-Jacobi reachability for precomputation and three different real-time trajectory planners with three different tracking-planning model pairs. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

We as a human can not avoid the disease, and when we are sick, we need to see a practical doctor. However, in term of location and patient's right for changing the practical doctor, then the patient when moving from one practical doctor to others will have similar and repeated questions such as medicine allergy, history of diseases and so on. Moreover, become a problem for a vulnerable patient such as unconscious patient, disabled or elderly when seeing a new practical doctor and at the end of the day, it will become malpractice. Few of the causes of the problem above are the lack of health education, delay in diagnosing/misdiagnosis, and inaccessible healthcare facilities and with the increasing popularity of telemedicine and IoT across the world, then we need to apply IoT in order to help the patient. In this paper, a framework is created and designed for an IoT-integrated mobile application for the patient where this mobile application is expected to be implemented. © 2019 IEEE.

The accumulation lipid from oleaginous microorganisms is recognized as a second generation fuel. Biooil is known to as intracellular product of oily yeast utilizing various carbon substrates and converting different quantities of lipids in the form of triacylglycerols. This second generation fuel can be used to make biodiesel via a transesterification process. This study investigated the morphological characteristics of eight strains of Thai oleaginous yeasts via microscopy and analyzed the fatty acid profiling of yeasts cultured in three carbon sources: glucose, sugar cane molasses and crude glycerol in order to estimate biodiesel properties. To approach this goal, batch fermentations were used to culture eight yeast strains, Rhodosporidium toruloides TISTR 5123, TISTR 5154, TISTR 5149, Yarrowia lipolytica TISTR 5054, TISTR 5151, TISTR 5621, Rhodotorula glutinis TISTR 5159 and Rhodotorula graminis TISTR 5124 for 96 h under 30°C at 250 rpm. Result revealed that eight yeast strains contained significant amounts of fatty acids and lipids and accumulated mainly palmitic acid (C16:0), stearic acid (C18:0), oleic acid (C 18:1) and linoleic acid (C18:2), and they are suitable for the production of biodiesel. Fatty acid productions and profiles indicated that these yeast strains can be potentially used as the triacylglycerols producers for biodiesel production. © 2020 The Authors, published by EDP sciences.

Van der Waals (vdW) heterojunctions, based on two-dimensional (2D) materials, have great potential for the development of ecofriendly and high-efficiency nanodevices, which shows valuable applications as photovoltaic cells, photodetectors, etc. However, the coexistence of photoelectric conversion and storage in a single device has not been achieved until now. Here, we demonstrate a simple strategy to construct a vdW p−n junction between a WSe2 layer and quasi-2D electron gas. After an optical illumination, the device stores the light-generated carriers for up to seven days, and then releases a very large photocurrent of 2.9 mA with bias voltage applied in darkness; this is referred to as chargeable photoconductivity (CPC), which completely differs from any previously observed photoelectric phenomenon. In normal photoconductivity, the recombination of electron-hole pairs occurs at the end of their lifetime; in contrast, infinite-lifetime photocarriers can be generated and stored in CPC devices without recombination. The photoelectric conversion and storage are completely self-excited during the charging process. The ratio between currents in full- and empty-photocarrier states below the critical temperature reaches as high as 109, with an external quantum efficiency of 93.8% during optical charging. A theoretical model developed to explain the mechanism of this effect is in good agreement with the experimental data. This work paves a path toward the high-efficiency devices for photoelectric conversion and storage.

Genes expression datasets are considered to be high dimensional dataset. It is very much needed that before predicting the genes expression dimensionality reduction must be performed. Machine learning algorithms fail to analyze genes expression due to its high dimensionality behaviour. These algorithms have to perform feature selection or feature extraction before classification. To overcome this dimensionality reduction approach deep learning algorithms are implemented which has shown improved performance. This paper is also based on the approach of deep learning algorithm which is based on a classification approach using hybridization of a deep neural network named Hybrid Deep Neural Network (HDNN) in which Convolutional Neural Networks are combined with Recurrent Neural Networks to perform prediction. Parameters like accuracy, AUC, precision, and F1score have shown improved performance than other state of art algorithms with 85.5%, 0.84, 0.81, and 0.79 respectively.

Topology establishes a unifying framework for a diverse range of scientific areas including particle physics, cosmology, and condensed matter physics. One of the most fascinating manifestations of topology in the context of condensed matter is the topological Hall effect, and its relative: the Skyrmion Hall effect. Skyrmions are stable vortex-like spin configurations in certain chiral magnets, and when subject to external electric currents can drift in the transverse direction to the current. These quasi-particles are characterised by a conserved topological charge which in the Skyrmion Hall effect plays the role of electric charges in the ordinary Hall effect. Recently, it has been shown that liquid crystals endowed with chiral properties serve as an ideal testbed for the fundamental investigation of topological solitons, including their two- and three-dimensional realisations. Here, we show experimentally and numerically that three-dimensional solitons aka"torons" exhibit a Hall-like effect when driven by shear flows: the torons are deflected in the direction perpendicular to the shear plane. The experimental results are rationalised in terms of the dynamic Ericksen-Leslie equations, which predict the emergence of the transverse component of the net mass flow, the magnitude of which scales as the 3rd power of the shear rate. The perturbation analysis highlights an interplay of the viscous and chiral elastic torques as the mechanism for the emergence of net transverse currents. Numerical simulations demonstrate, however, that torons are not merely dragged by the flow but move with their own transverse speed, much larger than the average flow velocity in the transverse direction. Our findings may enable responsive microfluidic applications relying on soft topological solitons. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Three-dimensional (3D) simulations of the structure of liquid crystal (LC) torons, topologically protected distortions of the LC director field, under material flows are rare but essential in microfluidic applications. Here, we show that torons adopt a steady-state configuration at low flow velocity before disintegrating at higher velocities, in line with experimental results. Furthermore, we show that under partial slip conditions at the boundaries, the flow induces a reversible elongation of the torons, also consistent with the experimental observations. These results are in contrast with previous simulation results for 2D skyrmions under similar flow conditions, highlighting the need for a 3D description of this LC soliton in relation to its coupling to the material flow. These findings pave the way for future studies of other topological solitons, like hopfions and heliknotons, in flowing soft matter systems. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.
