Efficient aggregation of data collected by sensors is crucial for a successful application of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Both minimizing the energy cost and reducing the time duration (or called latency) of data aggregation have been extensively studied for WSNs. Algorithms with theoretical performance guarantees are only known under the protocol interference model, or graph-based interference models generally. In this paper, we study the problem of designing time efficient aggregation algorithm under the physical interference model. To the best of our knowledge, no algorithms with theoretical performance guarantees are known for this problem in the literature. We propose an efficient algorithm that produces a data aggregation tree and a collision-free aggregation schedule. We theoretically prove that the latency of our aggregation schedule is bounded by O(R + Delta) time-slots. Here R is the network radius and Delta is the maximum node degree in the communication graph of the original network. In addition, we derive the lower-bound of latency for any aggregation scheduling algorithm under the physical interference model. We show that the latency achieved by our algorithm asymptotically matches the lower-bound for random wireless networks. Our extensive simulation results corroborate our theoretical analysis.

In this paper, we study efficient data collection and aggregation problem in wireless sensor networks. We first propose efficient distributed algorithms for data collection problem with approximately the minimum delay, or the minimum number of messages to be sent by all wireless nodes, or the minimum total energy consumption by all wireless nodes respectively. For example, given an algorithm A for data collection, let ¿ T , ¿ M , and ¿ E be the approximation ratio of A in terms of time complexity, message complexity, and energy complexity respectively. We then show that, for data collection, there are networks of n nodes and maximum degree ¿, such that ¿ M¿E = ¿(¿) for any algorithm. In addition, we analytically proved that all our proposed methods are either optimum or within constants factor of the optimum. We further present the message, energy, time complexity and studied the complexity tradeoffs for data aggregation problem.

In this paper, a finger pose estimation method is presented. A direct use of fingers is useful in some applications which require handling of 3D position information. Our finger pose estimation method exploits anatomical constraints on finger motion and ring-shaped markers to achieve simple and practical measurements applicable to daily life situations. The use of anatomical constraints ensures that no exact placement of the markers is required.

The AMALTHEA REU program is a 10-week, summer research experience for science or engineering undergraduate students funded by the National science Foundation since 2007 and featuring Machine Learning as its intellectual focus. Moreover, it is a joint effort of two collaborating universities in Central Florida, namely Florida Institute of technology in Melbourne and University of Central Florida in Orlando. Organizing, implementing and directing REU Sites is typically perceived as a demanding effort;while offering unique advantages, operating collaborative sites may impose an additional layer of challenges. In this paper our intention is to present the objectives of our program, its unique characteristics, and the structure and organization of our collaborative site. Furthermore, we would like to give an informative account of our activities across the various aspects of the program, such as marketing of the experience, recruiting of student participants, the summer experience itself and our dissemination efforts. Finally, we report on our outcomes accomplished so far, which include research products and evaluation results. While our program is only entering into its third year of operation, we do hope that, by sharing our experiences and promising strategies to date, we will encourage and aid prospective REU Site directors to successfully plan for and operate collaborative sites. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2009.

The equalization-cancellation (EC) model has been extensively studied for expressing binaural masking level difference (BMLD) in psychoacoustics. Few research focuses on applying this psychoacoustic model to speech processing applications, such as speech enhancement. In this paper, we propose a two-stage binaural speech enhancement with Wiener filter (TS-BASE/WF) based on the EC model. In this proposed TS-BASE/WF, interfering signals are first estimated by equalizing and cancelling the target signal based on the EC model, and a time-variant Wiener filter is then applied to enhance the target signal given noisy mixture signals. The main advantages of the proposed TS-BASE/WF are: (1) effectiveness in dealing with non-stationary multiple-source interfering signals; (2) success in localizing the target sound source after processing. These advantages were confirmed by comprehensive experiments in different spatial scenarios in terms of speech enhancement and sound localization.

Web service technologies are becoming increasingly important for integrating service-oriented applications. The Web services reverse engineering process becomes necessary in order to facilitate the reuse and composition of Web services. This paper describes a model driven Web service reverse engineering process, where Web service descriptions (WSDL) are transformed to UML models, then the generated UML models are integrated into composite Web services, finally the new Web service descriptions (OWL) are generated.

Online games have been played mainly over wired networks due to high speed links and capable desktop computers. The advances in mobile devices and ever increasing wireless link bandwidth motivate us to study whether players can enjoy online gaming over broadband wireless networks such as mobile WiMAX networks. In this paper we carry out the World of Warcraft (WoW) measurements via the mobile WiMAX networks and analysis the performance. We focus on two aspects: (1) application level packet dynamics such as RTT and jitter; (2) WiMAX link level statistics such as wireless link quality and handovers. We measure various scenarios for comprehensive analysis of WoW traffic and WiMAX link-layer characteristics. Finally we discuss how to improve the service quality of WiMAX online gaming.

A data mining framework has been proposed to estimate intracranial pressure (ICP) non-invasively in our previous work. In the corresponding approach, the feature vector extracted from arterial blood pressure (ABP) and flow velocity (FV) is translated to the estimated errors by the mapping function for each entry in the database. In this paper, three different mapping function solutions, linear least squares (LLS), truncated singular value decomposition (TSVD) and standard Tikhonov regularization (STR) are systemically tested to compare the possible effects of different solutions on the non-invasive ICP estimation. The conducted comparison demonstrated that the selection of mapping function solution actually influences the estimation. Among the tested three solutions for mapping function, TSVD and STR show better ICP estimation performance with smaller ICP errors than LLS.

Changes of ICP waveform morphology are characterized with different patients' states like hypertension, hydrocephalus and traumatic brain injury etc. Morphological clustering and analysis of ICP pulse (MOCAIP) approach is recently developed to extract ICP morphology feature, in which hierarchical clustering is used to extract the dominated pulse. In this paper, we evaluate the feasibility of using principle component analysis (PCA) and independent component analysis (ICA) to extract dominated pulse. The comparative study among clustering, PCA and ICP based approaches shows that PCA approach may be an alternative of clustering approach to extract dominated pulse in a faster fashion when dataset is of large size.

The flame-made (5/5) pure ZnO and WO 3 -doped ZnO nanoparticles containing 0.25, 0.50, and 0.75 mol% of WO 3 were successfully synthesized by flame spray pyrolysis (FSP). These materials were studied for NO 2 , CO and H 2 gas sensing at different gas concentrations and operating temperatures ranging from 300-400°C in dry air. The crystalline phase, morphology and size of the nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, BET, TEM, SEM and EDS in order to correlate physical properties with gas sensing performance. The gas-sensing results showed that WO 3 doping significantly enhanced NO 2 gas-sensing performance of ZnO nanoparticles. In addition, 0.5 mol% is found to be an optimal WO 3 concentration which gives the highest sensitivity towards NO 2 .
