An academic/industry alliance can improve the preparedness of students to enter the workforce. When the alliance is centered around a laboratory providing students real world research and development experience, both partners benefit from the intellectual engagement. This paper discusses the benefits of a collaborative laboratory being developed in support of the modeling and simulation engineering program at Old Dominion University. The laboratory focuses on simulation-based test and evaluation (T&E) of autonomous vehicles, an important economic and social problem. Economically, driverless cars and drone delivery systems are the wave of the future. Socially there are issues of public acceptance of these systems as evident by public reaction to the infrequent, but highly public, accidents involving driverless cars. The laboratory allows academia and industry to address these important problems by improving the T&E of these systems while also improving student skills, giving undergraduate and graduate students an opportunity to participate in research. © 2018 IEEE

Performing laboratory experiment for off-campus and distance learning students is always a challenging task. Unlike other theory-based courses, engineering laboratory experiment focuses heavily on hands-on tasks. Although many web-based and other virtual reality (VR)-based laboratories widely exist, non-portability, difficult accessibility and high cost of these VR-based devices bring disadvantages to the convenience of learning. One solution is to use mobile devices, which are more portable, easier to access and cheaper in cost, and yet can still be interactive and engaging for students to practice and experience hands-on activities. In this paper, we discuss the benefits of using mobile devices for online education and the development of an Android-based 3D interactive mobile app for an undergraduate mechanical engineering laboratory. This app is capable of not only providing off-campus and distance-learning students an opportunity to practice the experiment on mobile devices, but also helping on-campus students to get familiarized with the experiment procedure prior to their physical laboratory experiment. © American Society for engineering Education, 2018.

Dangerous driving events data are widely used as surrogates to traffic crashes. Large-scale dangerous driving events data collected from smartphones are explored in this study. Clustering analysis is performed on dangerous driving events counted in spatial cells. Spatial and temporal patterns of the cluster distributions are then explored. Both the existence of spatial autocorrelation and the similarity of cluster distributions for different time periods are uncovered.

A Lane-based Predictive Model of Downstream Arrival Rates in a Queue Estimation Model Using a Long Short-Term Memory Network

In this study, we develop a mathematical framework to predict cycle-based queued vehicles at each individual lane using a deep learning method – the long short-term memory (LSTM) network. The key challenges are to decide the existence of residual queued vehicles at the end of each cycle, and to predict the lane-based downstream arrivals to calculate vertical queue lengths at individual lanes using an integrated deep learning method. The primary contribution of the proposed method is to enhance the predictive accuracy of lane-based queue lengths in the future cycles using the historical queuing patterns. A major advantage of implementing an integrated deep learning process compared to the previously Kalman-filter-based queue estimation approach (Lee et al., 2015) is that there is no need to calibrate the co-variance matrix and tune the gain values (parameters) of the estimator. In the simulation results, the proposed method perform better in only straight movements and a shared lane with left turning movements.

modeling and simulation of hurricane evacuation is an important task in emergency planning and management. One typically ignored factor that affects the development of a reliable evacuation model is the uncertainty caused by the incident-induced capacity loss. Lately, the impact of incidents on evacuation has drawn increasingly attention among researchers and practitioners, but few of them thoroughly investigated it using the real data in the modeling and simulation context. This study aims to investigate the impact of various types of incidents on modeling and simulation of hurricane evacuation. Particularly, the incidents that occurred under actual hurricane conditions are examined and their impact on the capacity loss is modeled. The developed incident frequency and duration models are incorporated into the network assignment model to study traffic conditions under hurricane Sandy in New York. Results show that the consideration of incident-induced capacity loss can greatly change the outcome of the evacuation model. Our findings suggest the need to include a well calibrated and validated traffic incident generation module for modeling and simulating hurricane evacuation.

This paper presents an investigation into the convergence of the fine-grained parallel algorithm for computing an incomplete LU factorization for non-symmetric and indefinite matrices. The fine-grained parallel incomplete LU factorization is a nonlinear fixed point iteration and convergence has not been extensively studied for problems that are not symmetric positive definite. This work investigates the convergence of the algorithm for these more difficult problems and additionally investigates how the occurrence of a computing fault may impact the convergence of the algorithm for the problems being studied. The results obtained suggest that this class of problems presents challenges for the fine-grained parallel incomplete LU factorization (less than 30% of configurations converge naturally), and that while the occurrence of a fault can cause significant negative effects, the simple algorithmic change advocated here can completely ameliorate the effects of a fault.

Stress can impose negative impact on the health and well-being of a person. People who do not have tools to manage their stress are more likely to acquire cardiovascular disease (CVD) -The leading cause of death in the USA. For affected individuals, it not only implies health risks but also increased medical expenditures which can lead to financial issues -The top stressor in the USA. Research studies reveal that yoga reduces the stress perceived and modulates stress response systems. In this study, an agent-based model was developed to simulate the impact of adopting a yogic breathing technique, particularly on managing stress, preventing CVD and reducing the associated medical expenses. The simulation results show that people who practice SKY have generally lower and normal SBP, BMI and stress levels while those who don't, have generally higher levels and fall into the high-risk category. © 2017 Society for modeling & simulation International (SCS).

Blade tip vortices generated by a helicopter rotor blade are a major source of rotor noise and airframe vibration. The noise and vibration occur when a vortex passes close to, and interacts with, a rotor blade. Accurate prediction of Blade Vortex Interaction (BVI) remains a challenge for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). Although considerable research has been devoted to BVI noise reduction and experimental techniques for measuring the blade tip vortices in a wind tunnel, there are only a handful of post-processing tools available for extracting vortex core lines from CFD simulation data. In order to obtain the vortex core radius, most of these tools require the user to manually select a vortex core to perform the calculation. Furthermore, none of these tools provide an ability to track the growth of a vortex core, which is a measure of how quickly the vortex diffuses over time. This paper introduces an automated approach for tracking the core growth of a blade tip vortex from CFD simulations of rotorcraft in hover. The proposed method enables effective quantification and visualization of blade tip vortices in helicopter rotor wakes. © 2018, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. Understanding pedestrian behavior under emergency conditions is critical for emergency preparedness. However, the high cost associated with field experiments limited the opportunities for exploring large-scale pedestrian behavior under various emergency scenarios. As an alternative, pedestrian modeling and simulation has become increasingly important in emergency studies. An efficient and valid simulation model that can facilitate the analyses and tests of different emergency management plans is still needed. Thus, this study aims to develop an improved simulation model for analyzing pedestrian movement under fire evacuation. The proposed model was built upon conventional social force model but with extended module addressing pedestrian behavior changes. The model was incorporated in simulation under Unity context and verified from different aspects. The proposed model was then applied to a fire evacuation experiment. Comparative experiments were conducted and the simulation results suggest that the proposed model is more appropriate for simulating pedestrian behavior under fire evacuation. ©2017 Society for modeling & simulation International (SCS).

In discrete event simulation development, a large conceptual leap often is made when going from the system model to the simulation implementation. The event model, describing how events are scheduled and executed, is implied rather than explicitly stated. This paper addresses the gap by introducing a new visualization tool based on event graphs. Given an event graph representation of the event model, the tool allows the developer to observe the execution and scheduling of events during simulation execution. The use of the visualization tool encourages students to explicitly consider the event model, thus providing additional insight to the relationship between the model and the implementation. To better support more general discrete event simulation development efforts, including software development and verification and validation activities, future research will consider interfacing the visualization tool with simulation software tools and developing the capability to reverse engineer the event model from an existing simulation. ©2017 Society for modeling & simulation International (SCS).
