Co-designing applications and computer architectures has become of major importance due to the growing complexity of both applications and architectures and the need to better match application characteristics to the available hardware. Thus, "mini-applications", which serve as proxies of large-scale ones by highlighting their most intensive parts and major workflow components, appeared to the co-design, tuning, and adaptation purposes. This paper presents a work on optimizing the communication subsystem of a classical MD proxy (CoMD) application executed on multi-core computing clusters. The research focuses on hiding communication with certain buffer handling operations. In particular, two strategies are presented: one that uses two parallel threads for communication and buffer handling and another that introduces more parallelism by allowing all the available threads to unload the buffers while using two thread to communicate, thereby improving load balancing. The first proposed strategy yields performance gains up to 61% in the communication routines, corresponding to 6% gains in the overall time, while the second strategy achieves, respectively, about 73% and 6.3% improvement.

The classical, popular Hungarian algorithm for solving the “optimum assignment” problems (with its broad engineering/science applications) has been well-documented in the literature. Other (more efficient) variations of the Hungarian algorithm have also been extensively studied by the research communities. In this paper, the basic Hungarian algorithm is revisited, with the ultimate goal of developing a useful, user friendly, attractive Java computer animation for “effectively teaching” this basic/important optimum assignment algorithm. The final product from this work will help both the students and their instructor to not only mastering this technical subject, but also provide valuable tool for obtaining the solutions for homework assignments, class examinations, self-assessment tools, etc. A demo video of the Hungarian Algorithm's animation and result can be viewed online from any web browser using the website provided in reference [9].

A radically new approach to the design and implementation of high-technology, computer-driven manikin-based simulation environments for medical training is proposed. The approach utilizes a novel, component-based manikin hardware architecture currently under research for the U.S. military. A new distributed software architecture is proposed in this paper that facilitates interoperability among manikin components and provides the potential to easily integrate other real or virtual devices normally present in a real medical facility. © 2015 Society for modeling & simulation International (SCS).

Surgical simulation is embraced by many for training and skill transfer purposes of non-trivial minimally invasive procedures. Some systems utilize haptic feedback within an anatomically-correct virtual environment whereas others use manikins, synthetic components and box trainers. This paper explores the challenges and implications of reproducing the Nuss procedure on both a solely-virtual and a solely-physical environment. This work then describes a roadmap for a hybrid system that employs a best-of-both approach integrating both physical and virtual schemes to achieve a mixed reality implementation of the primary steps of the Nuss procedure.

In most of the traffic safety studies, both the identification of high-risk locations and the assessment of safety improvement solutions are done through the use of historical crash data. This study proposes an alternative approach that makes use of traffic conflicts extracted from traffic video recordings for safety assessment. State-of-the-art computer vision techniques are used to extract vehicle trajectories automatically from 70 hours of traffic video data at two intersections. More specifically, a modified implementation of the Kanade-Lucas-Tomasi (KLT) feature tracker is used to extract the feature points and track those feature points frame by frame. The spectral embedding and the Dirichlet process Gaussian mixture model (DPGMM) are employed to cluster feature points that belong to the same object. The combination of each vehicle's individual trajectory with all the others' trajectories is then screened to identify all the possible vehicle pairs involved in conflict risk. Traffic conflict risks are identified after the time to collision (TTC) is computed for each vehicle pair. Hourly number of conflicts are found to follow a negative binomial distribution similar to number of crashes. A strong correlation is observed between the traffic conflicts and actual crashes, and thus the validity of using conflict data extracted from videos for safety assessment can be confirmed. The proposed approach has potential transferability and can be implemented by transportation agencies in other cities.

Despite their proven advantages in science and engineering and their broad application in daily activities such as travel planning and financial planning, simulations are not widely utilized in education, particularly at the K-12 levels. One of the main reasons is that simulation use and simulation building is reserved for expert's use and remains out of the reach to a larger audience. One potential solution is modeling and simulation as a Service (MSaaS) for education in the form of a cloud-based simulation learning environments (CSLEs). CSLEs can provide worldwide access to many people for using and building simulations as well as exposing them to STEM concepts like data capture and probability. This paper presents a roadmap for CSLEs. The roadmap, six requirements for building CSLEs, draws on insights from 1) testing a cloud-based simulation environment for education purposes with students ranging from middle school to graduate school and 2) capturing longitudinal data of simulation-building activities. Insights from the students' testing of the environment suggest that using drawings as conceptual models facilitates the transition from a real-life system to abstraction into implementation of the model. Longitudinal data capture provides the potential for identifying simulation-building habits across levels of expertise and the development of metrics and models for simulation development.

This paper presents a mathematical modeling technique that allows for formulating a farmer decision problem. We use fuzzy logic and binary integer programming respectively to represent the factors and decision utilities in the problem. We will briefly look at the data requirements for this model. The techniques used in determining the fuzzy rule base will be discussed. We will show the application of artificial neural networks for determining the rule base in our model. A mathematical representation of the system will be created, which can act as an approximation for any problem formulation. Finally, we will use all these techniques on a sample problem, which uses simulated data.

Real-time mirror reflection is employed in many virtual reality applications to achieve visuo-haptic collocation. Its use, however, necessitates adjustments to the original model as well any used input devices to compensate for changes due to image reversion. This paper introduces a design and implementation of a generic configuration component for virtual environments that adjusts image characteristics and haptic interfaces to accommodate such setups while preserving the properties and features of the original model. Furthermore, this work executes running multiple display viewports for the same virtual environment synchronously. This work accomplishes a significant step in the development of a surgical simulator for the Nuss Procedure surgery performed to correct Pectus Excavatum, a congenital deformity of the anterior chest wall.
