The Intel Xeon Phi coprocessor offers high parallelism on energy-efficient hardware to minimize energy consumption while maintaining performance. Dynamic frequency and voltage scaling is not accessible on the Intel Xeon Phi. Hence, saving energy relies mainly on tuning application performance. One general optimization technique is thread affinity, which is an important factor in multi-core architectures. This work investigates the effects of varying thread affinity modes and reducing core utilization on energy and execution time for the NASA Advanced Supercomputing (NAS) Parallel Benchmarks (NPB). Energy measurements are captured using the micsmc utility tool available on Xeon Phi. The measurements are checked against total power captured using Wattsup power meters. The results are compared to the system-default thread affinity and granularity modes. Mostly positive impacts on performance and energy are observed: When executed at the maximum thread count on all unoccupied cores, all the benchmarks but one exhibited energy savings if a specific affinity mode is set. © 2014 IEEE.

With rapid development of minimally invasive surgery, proficiency with intricate skills is becoming a greater concern. Consequently, the use of out-of-operating room training has increased significantly through employing high-fidelity and anatomically-correct graphics and haptic interfaces in virtual reality simulations. The effort in developing surgical simulators for generic minimally invasive procedures is still, however, suboptimal for many haptic implementations. A main aspect of such simulations is the pivoting behavior of the surgical tool realized using the haptic device. This paper investigates the limitation of a fullyvirtual implementation of the pivot and the ability to augment haptic interfaces to achieve a natural representation of forces. The design and implementation of two surgical tool pivoting techniques are introduced. Furthermore, a phantom is constructed from synthesized components to be used to measure and reproduce realistic mechanical properties of the anatomical model and pivot behavior. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Automated image-guided surgery for common and complex dental implants

Dental implantation is now recognized as a standard of care for replacing missing teeth. Pre-operative planning with patient-specific images provides the basis for precise surgery, but such accuracy is hampered to some degree because of the manual drilling procedures performed by the surgeon. In this paper, a robotic system for automated site preparation for dental implants is presented in order to provide high accuracy drilling. The results of some experiments are given to validate the system. Additionally, results are shown for jaw surgery that utilize natural-root-formed implants which can contain multiple roots. This more complex type of implant is impossible to drill manually but can provide better long-term stability and success. With this robotic system, controlled and accurate drilling was achieved, which made more advanced implant designs possible. © 2014 Informa UK Ltd.

This paper presents a mathematical modeling technique that allows for formulating a farmer decision problem. We use fuzzy logic and binary integer programming respectively to represent the factors and decision utilities in the problem. We will briefly look at the data requirements for this model. The techniques used in determining the fuzzy rule base will be discussed. We will show the application of artificial neural networks for determining the rule base in our model. A mathematical representation of the system will be created, which can act as an approximation for any problem formulation. Finally, we will use all these techniques on a sample problem, which uses simulated data.

Real-time mirror reflection is employed in many virtual reality applications to achieve visuo-haptic collocation. Its use, however, necessitates adjustments to the original model as well any used input devices to compensate for changes due to image reversion. This paper introduces a design and implementation of a generic configuration component for virtual environments that adjusts image characteristics and haptic interfaces to accommodate such setups while preserving the properties and features of the original model. Furthermore, this work executes running multiple display viewports for the same virtual environment synchronously. This work accomplishes a significant step in the development of a surgical simulator for the Nuss Procedure surgery performed to correct Pectus Excavatum, a congenital deformity of the anterior chest wall.

Molecular dynamics simulations are used extensively in science and engineering. Co-Design Molecular Dynamics (CoMD) is a proxy application that reflects the workload characteristics of production molecular dynamics software. In particular, CoMD is computationally intensive with 90+% of execution time spent to calculate inter-atomic force potentials. Hence, this application is an ideal candidate for acceleration with the Intel Xeon Phi because it has high theoretical computational performance with low energy consumption. In this work, the kernel computing Embedded Atom model (EAM) forces is adapted to utilize the Intel Xeon Phi acceleration. Performance and energy are measured in the experiments that vary thread affinity, thread count, problem size, node count, and the number of Xeon Phi's per node. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) is used to reduce host-side power draw during Xeon Phi accelerated phases of the application. Test results are compared against the original (host-only) implementation that uses multithreading, and energy savings as high as 30% are observed.

This paper presents a new method for mesh color sharpening using the discrete Laplace-Beltrami operator, which is an approximation of second order derivatives on irregular 3D meshes. The one-ring neighborhood is utilized to compute the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The color for each vertex is updated by adding the Laplace-Beltrami operator of the vertex color weighted by a factor to its original value. Different discretizations of the Laplace-Beltrami operator have been proposed for geometrical processing of 3D meshes. This paper utilizes several discretizations of the Laplace-Beltrami operator for sharpening 3D mesh colors and compares their performance. Experimental results demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Agent-based modeling (ABM) approach is used to reassess the Barabasi-Albert (BA) model, the classical algorithm used to describe the emergent mechanism of scale-free networks. This approach allows for the incorporation of agent heterogeneity which is rarely considered in BA model and its extended models. The authors argue that, in social networks, people's intention to connect is not only affected by popularity, but also strongly affected by the extent of similarity. The authors propose that in forming social networks, agents are constantly balancing between instrumental and intrinsic preferences. The proposed model allows for varying the weighting of instrumental and intrinsic preferences on the agents attachment choices. The authors also find that changing preferences of individuals can lead to significant deviations from power-law degree distribution. Given the importance of intrinsic consideration in social networking, the findings emerged from this study is conducive to future studies of social networks.

Colorado is generating its electricity mostly from coal, the most inexpensive electricity generation resource, and natural gas since the state has rich and vast reserves in a regulated electricity market. However, these resources are affecting environmental sustainability in a negative way. Due to the rich renewable energy profile of the state along with the recent state legislation which forces investor owned electricity utilities to produce at least 30% out of renewables by 2020, investors face the problem of how to make investments and how these investments affect the CO2 emissions. In this study, an electricity market model for the state of Colorado is developed in order to analyze the investment decision dynamics and effects on long-term CO2 emissions in the state.

Recent studies show that the market share of smartphones continues to grow with over 60 percent U.S. mobile subscribers owning smartphones as of December 2013. Smartphones have matured as a computing platform and are now equipped with multiple low-energy sensors including gyroscope, compass, accelerometer, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor. Even though researchers used data from cell phones before, they relied on GPS which has the disadvantages of low accuracy in urban canyons and depleting the phone battery quickly. In this paper, we use accelerometer data for inferring whether a vehicle is in motion or stopping (e.g., at a traffic light). Pattern recognition models are developed and tested with data collected from the field. The results show that stops can be effectively identified, with a limited number of false alarms. The developed techniques can support various applications including traffic monitoring, signal timing optimization, and emission prediction.
