With the development of machine learning technology in various fields, such as medical care, smart manufacturing, etc., the data has exploded. It is a challenge to train a deep learning model for different application domains with large-scale data and limited resources of a single device. The distributed machine-learning technology, which uses a parameter server and multiple clients to train a model collaboratively, is an excellent method to solve this problem. However, it needs much communication between different devices with limited communication resources. The stale synchronous parallel method is a mainstream communication method to solve this problem, but it always leads to high synchronization delay and low computing efficiency as the inappropriate delay threshold value set by the user based on experience. This paper proposes a synchronous parallel method with parameters communication prediction for distributed machine learning. It predicts the optimal timing for synchronization, which can solve the problem of long synchronization waiting time caused by the inappropriate threshold settings in the stale synchronous parallel method. Moreover, it allows fast nodes to continue local training while performing global synchronization, which can improve the resource utilization of work nodes. Experimental results show that compared with the delayed synchronous parallel method, the training time and quality, and resource usage of our method are both significantly improved. © ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2024.

The present study explores a simulation model combining system dynamics and discrete-event simulation for an electric vehicle charging system. For the representation of the charging demand the model employs data from an actual facility for vehicle charging. While being connected to the electrical grid, the system is augmented by a solar photovoltaic installation and stationary battery energy storage. Multiple simulation runs were performed to analyze the considered energy system over a 1-year period and compare relevant output parameters for different system configurations and system locations. Results show that a solar photovoltaic installation can be effectively integrated. For the degree of self-sufficiency, high values of 87% can be achieved with combined solar photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems.

Dielectric elastomers are a promising technology for wave energy harvesting. An optimal system operation can allow maximizing the extracted energy and, simultaneously, reducing wear that would lead to a reduction in the wave harvester lifetime. We pursue a model-based optimization approach to identify optimal controls for wave energy harvesters based on dielectric elastomers. First, a direct method is used for time-discretization of the dielectric elastomer wave energy harvester in the optimal control problem. The two conflicting objectives are considered in a multiobjective optimization framework. Considering a periodic, sinusoidal wave excitation, the optimal solution shows turnpike properties for the optimal periodic mode of operation. However, since real wave motion is neither monochromatic nor predictable on longer time horizons, further extensions are pursued. First, we introduce a stochastic wave excitation. Second, an iterative model-predictive control scheme is designed. Due to multiple objectives, the control scheme has to include an automated adaption of the corresponding priorities. Here, we propose and evaluate a heuristic rule-based adaption in order to maintain the damage below target levels. The approach presented here might be used in the future to guarantee for autonomous operation of farms of wave energy harvesters. © 2023 The Authors. GAMM - Mitteilungen published by Wiley-VCH GmbH.

Maritime communication helps vessels and ports plan their movements, exchange environmental information, and communicate among themselves. The vessels' movement and changing location are critical to keep them secure from data interception and data tampering by unauthorized parties during transmission. To secure maritime communication, we propose a novel lightweight authentication scheme sensitive to the current ship location. We assess the effectiveness of the proposed protocol in defending against a range of security threats while keeping communication and computation costs low, and meeting the desired security and functional requirements of anonymity and untraceability. The detailed security analysis using the widely accepted Scyther tool demonstrates that location-based keys as proposed in our protocol are secure against location inference and spoofing attacks among others.

The paper presents integration of fuzzy logic into adaptation mechanism of Luenberger observer for sensorless pulse width modulation-direct torque controlled (PWM-DTC) induction motor (IM) drive. At first, DTC strategy and PWM technique are described. Next, basic mathematical model for state representation, adaptive signal and proportional-integral (PI) adaptation mechanism of Luenberger observer is shown. However, the PI adaptation mechanism cannot ensure desired motor speed responses in both dynamic and steady-state operations of IM drive. Fuzzy logic control theory is added to overcome the disadvantage of PI adaptation mechanism via update proportional gain and integral constant time of PI controller. simulations of sensorless control for two adaptation mechanisms are carried out at different reference speeds. Speed deviations are utilized to evaluate the performance of two adaptation mechanisms at both dynamic and steady-state operations. A system of carrier rockets tracing target points is modeled and simulated in Simulink platform of MATLAB, in order to reduce the workloads of designers in designing, analyzing, calculating and selecting the carrier rockets’ motion parameters. Based on the dynamic formula of carrier rockets strictly deduced in this study for tracing targets, a three-degree free tracing system simulation, combined with model simulation techniques, is established, and the proper carrier rockets’ design parameters are studied according to the results of the simulation. First, this paper introduces the background and stresses the importance of carrier rockets in national defense, and then analyzes the problems with system modeling and analysis to be solved. After designing some sub-system simulation modules and integrating them into Simulink platform, this research sets up an tracing simulation model. And finally, by executing the trascing system simulation under the condition of different guidance ratio values, this research obtains corresponding simulation results and compares the influences of various guidance ratio values on the tracing effects. © ICST Institute for Computer Sciences, Social Informatics and Telecommunications engineering 2021.

Model for the structure function constant for index of refraction fluctuations in Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence

A model for the structure function constant associated with the index of refraction fluctuations in Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence is developed. The model is based upon the following assumptions: (1) the turbulence is homogeneous and isotropic at or near the midplane, (2) the rate of production is in balance with the rate of dissipation, (3) an inertial region exists, and (4) estimates for the rate of dissipation of temperature fluctuations and of turbulent kinetic energy can be made by assuming that the large-scale turbulence is dissipated in one eddy turnover time. From these assumptions, the dependence of the structure function on the geometry, heat flux, and the properties of the fluid is obtained. The model predicts that the normalized structure function constant is independent of the Rayleigh number. To verify the model, numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Bénard turbulence were performed using two different approaches: an in-house code based on a pseudospectral method, and a finite volume code which employs a model for the smallest scales of the turbulence. The model was found to agree with the results of the simulations, thereby lending support for the assumptions underlying the theory.
