We apply a game theory framework to cyber war in the areas of Cyber Influence Operations (CIOs), Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs), and Traditional Cyber Attacks (TCAs). For greater generalizability, we rely on a set of actor typologies based on posture rather than individual countries. Our findings suggest that cyberwar will remain problematic going forward, especially with respect to APTs and that great powers will be the most likely offenders. They will also be the most stubborn actors when it comes to diminishing cyberwar in general, even when the base game can be transformed into one that favors cooperation over conflict. © Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2021.

This research utilizes statistical path modeling to examine the relationship between the number of Venezuelans migrating to Colombia due to economic collapse and the media's coverage of specific topics. We focus on media coverage expressing frustration regarding migration, infrastructure, government, and geopolitics. Our approach combines quantitative analysis of code frequencies from qualitative content analysis of 1,360 regional newspaper articles on migration-related issues. Our findings indicate that an increase in the Venezuelan population in Colombia leads to more negative media coverage of infrastructure impacts, such as hospitals and schools. This negative coverage, referred to as "frustration," indirectly contributes to increased coverage of infrastructure frustration. This suggests an opportunity for intervention by balancing media coverage to reduce the excessive use of negative language and stereotypes, potentially mitigating anti-migrant sentiment fueled by frustration towards infrastructure. Furthermore, we observe that as migration increases, coverage of frustration towards geopolitics decreases, while frustration towards the Colombian government rises. This shift may reflect a transition from contemplating the causes of migration to focusing on the humanitarian response (or lack thereof) by the host government in accommodating the new arrivals. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

Lanarkite is a mineral formed by a combination of lead, sulphur, and oxygen atoms arranged in the general chemical formula Pb2SO5 (PSO) that crystallises with monoclinic symmetry (belonging to the C2/m space group, No. 12). This mineral was first discovered in Lanarkshire, Scotland and was named after its location. PSO has a unique structure comprising alternating penta-coordinated lead [PbO5] and tetra-coordinated sulphur [SO4] clusters. This lanarkite-type structure has recently attracted significant scientific interest and has been the focus of the superconducting material research community. However, its chemistry needs to be explored further. This article presents a comprehensive investigation on the chemical bonding, electronic structure, and spectroscopic properties of the lanarkite-type PSO structure from a computational perspective. Thus, different functionals in the DFT (e.g., PBE, PBE0, PBESOL, PBESOL0, BLYP, WC1LYP37, and B3LYP) were assessed to accurately predict their fundamental properties. All the DFT calculations were performed using a triple-zeta valence plus polarisation basis set. Among all the DFT functionals tested in this study, PBE showed the best agreement with the experimental data available in the literature. Our results also reveal that the [PbO5] clusters are formed with three Pb–O bond lengths, with values of about 2.32, 2.59, and 2.84 Å, respectively, while the [SO4] clusters have the same S–O bond length of 1.57 Å. We performed a complete topological analysis of this system to comprehend these structural differences. Additionally, the PSO structure has an indirect band gap energy of 2.9 eV and an effective mass ratio (mℎ∗ /me∗) of about 0.415 (using PBE calculations) which may, in principle, indicate a low recombination of electron-hole pairs in the lanarkite structure. Therefore, we believe that a detailed understanding of their electronic structures, spectroscopic properties as well as their chemical bonding is critically important

The automation of experiments in life sciences and chemistry has significantly advanced with the development of various instruments and AI technologies. However, achieving full laboratory automation, where experiments conceived by scientists are seamlessly executed in automated laboratories, remains a challenge. We identify the lack of automation in planning and operational tasks—critical human-managed processes collectively termed "care"—as a major barrier. Automating care is the key enabler for full laboratory automation. To address this, we propose the concept of self-maintainability (SeM): the ability of a laboratory system to autonomously adapt to internal and external disturbances, maintaining operational readiness akin to living cells. A SeM-enabled laboratory features autonomous recognition of its state, dynamic resource and information management, and adaptive responses to unexpected conditions. This shifts the planning and execution of experimental workflows, including scheduling and reagent allocation, from humans to the system. We present a conceptual framework for implementing SeM-enabled laboratories, comprising three modules—Requirement manager, Labware manager, and Device manager—and a Central manager. SeM not only enables scientists to execute envisioned experiments seamlessly but also provides developers with a design concept that drives the technological innovations needed for full automation. Certain social norms evolve without punishment as conventions that do not adversely affect society. In this paper, we depart from the notion that humanitarianism is one such social norm, where peer pressure may be the only type of punishment that encourages individuals to conform. Using an agent-based modeling approach, we examine the role that networked elites have in diffusing a non-punishment-enforced norm through an artificial society. The model considers norm advocates who promote a norm of humanitarianism, elites who have wide networks to spread the new norm, and general individuals who evaluate the norm pushed from elites and adopted by their peers. The study finds that, regardless of starting parameter values, the population converges into two groups: norm adopters and those who oppose the norm.

Objectives: The 12-item Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form (SCS–SF) is a widely used instrument for the assessment of self-compassion. To date, there have been few examinations of this instrument’s psychometric properties, particularly across nations and languages. Therefore, we used data from the Body Image in Nature Survey (BINS) to assess measurement invariance of the SCS–SF across nations, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Methods: Participants (N = 56,968) from 65 nations completed the SCS–SF in 40 languages. Using these data, we tested various hypothesised models of the SCS–SF in the total sample and, using multi-group confirmatory factor analysis, tested for invariance of the optimal model across national groups, languages, gender identities, and age groups. Results: In the total dataset, we found that an 11-item, 2-factor model (i.e., SCS-11) provided best fit to the data, with the two factors tapping distinct constructs of compassionate and uncompassionate self-responding. The SCS-11 was found to be partially scalar invariant across national groups and languages, and fully scalar invariant across gender identities and age groups. There was wide variation in latent means for the two factors, particularly across national groups and languages. Further analyses showed negligible associations between the two factors and sociodemographic variables, including marital status, financial security, and urbanicity. Conclusions: Our results suggest that it may be possible to derive a stable 2-factor model of the SCS–SF for use in cross-cultural research, but also highlight the likelihood of cross-national and cross-linguistic variations in the way that self-compassion is understood. © The Author(s) 2025.

Over the last decades there has been a growing interest in modeling human performance and analyzing human activity and human operator behavior to improve system design. A variety of tools and approaches which are based on task analysis methods and tools have been proposed. As technology advances and tasks become more demanding, human work changes increasing the need to create new methodologies and tools for task analysis to face the new challenges. The main aim of this research is to develop a new framework and model for simulation of human tasks performed by individuals with varying levels of skills, considering operator workload and human errors. In order to achieve this goal and fill the current gaps, a review of existing task analysis methods and tools is conducted and a model named UTASiMo is proposed. In addition, the Unified modeling Language is used to describe the conceptual model and illustrate the different constructs and concepts included in the model. Finally, we present a case study and a preliminary simulation model designed in AnyLogic TM .

Commonplace objects are being redesigned with digital functionality. Near invisible networks of radio frequency identification tags (RFID) are being deployed on almost every type of consumer product, and the "Ambient intelligence" promises to form a global network of physical objects as ubiquitous as the worldwide web itself. This diverse global network, "the internet of things" (IoT), provides digital connectivity on top of existing infrastructure and items. Nascent "smart object" developments like the presented "UCF Smart Mailbox," not only reformulate our relationship with the objects themselves, but they can also support social relationships that contribute to the sustainability of the society. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Virtual Humans (VHs) have been employed in multidisciplinary fields to advance interpersonal skills critical to many professional, including law enforcement agents, military personnel, managers, doctors, lawyers and other professionals. Law enforcement agencies in particular have faced a growing need to develop human to human interpersonal training to increase interviewing and interrogation skills. In this paper, we present a prototype VE that has been developed to provide law enforcement agents with effective interview and interrogation training and experiential learning. The virtual training environment will need to be tested and formally evaluated to verify the benefits compared to live exercises and traditional training techniques. © 2014 Springer International Publishing.
