With the development of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology, the notion of smart city concept comes to reality. Smart city covers a broad range of scenarios for citizens in their everyday life, such as smart home, smart traffic and smart healthcare. However, considering the IoT technology itself still under security threats, smart city security and resilience is a critical factor for truly embracing the smart age of everyday life. Current technology has a difficult time providing security in smart city architectures because of its decentralized and distributed nature. As a recently new technology, Blockchain uses a decentralized and distributed security approach to adding security to a decentralized and distributed IoT system. This paper presents a blockchain based solution to provide security and resilience in smart cities and analyze potential security concerns in the integration of blockchain technology into smart city infrastructure. Each of the concerns are discussed in detail.

A Unified Approach to Construct Generalized B-Splines for Isogeometric Applications

Abstract Generalized B-splines have been employed as geometric modeling and numerical simu- lation tools for isogeometric analysis （IGA for short）. However, the previous models used in IGA, such as trigonometric generalized B-splines or hyperbolic generalized B-splines, are not the unified mathematical representation of conics and polynomial parametric curves/surfaces. In this paper, a unified approach to construct the generalized non-uniform B-splines over the space spanned by {α（t）,β（t）,ξ（t）, η（t）, 1, t,……. , tn-4} is proposed, and the corresponding isogeometric analysis framework for PDE solving is also studied. Compared with the NURBS-IGA method, the proposed frameworks have several advantages such as high accuracy, easy-to-compute derivatives and integrals due to the non-rational form. Furthermore, with the proposed spline models, isogeometric analysis can be performed on the computational domain bounded by transcendental curves/surfaces, such as the involute of circle, the helix/helicoid, the catenary/catenoid and the cycloid. Several numerical examples for isogeometrie heat conduction problems are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Banks play an important role in the financial market, and their profit mainly comes from loan service. Traditional risk management approaches, as the key part in the loan services, still have several issues including low data credibility, unreliable checking and alert delay. We propose a novel dynamic credit risk management system which leverages edge-based blockchain technology to improve the performance and provide a fair loan environment. Besides, we discuss the potential challenges that the system may face, such as data standards, security on edge and scalability.

Uncertainty quantification (UQ) is a vital step in using mathematical models and simulations to take decisions. The field of cardiac simulation has begun to explore and adopt UQ methods to characterise uncertainty in model inputs and how that propagates through to outputs or predictions. In this perspective piece we draw attention to an important and under-addressed source of uncertainty in our predictions — that of uncertainty in the model structure or the equations themselves. The difference between imperfect models and reality is termed model discrepancy, and we are often uncertain as to the size and consequences of this discrepancy. Here we provide two examples of the consequences of discrepancy when calibrating models at the ion channel and action potential scales. Furthermore, we attempt to account for this discrepancy when calibrating and validating an ion channel model using different methods, based on modelling the discrepancy using Gaussian processes (GPs) and autoregressive-moving-average (ARMA) models, then highlight the advantages and shortcomings of each approach. *** evidence from human studies has revealed the adverse impact of ambient fine particles(PM2.5)on health outcomes related to metabolic disorders and distant *** exposure to ambient PM2.5 leads to kidney impairment remains *** rapid air quality improvement driven by the clean air actions in China since 2013 provides an opportunity for a quasiexperiment to investigate the beneficial effect of PM2.5 reduction on kidney *** on two repeated nationwide surveys of the same population of 5115 adults in 2011 and 2015,we conducted a difference-in-difference *** in long-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 were associated with changes in kidney function biomarkers,including estimated glomerular filtration rate by serum creatinine(GFRscr)or cystatin C(GFRcys),blood urea nitrogen(BUN),and uric acid(UA).*** a 10μg/m3 reduction in PM2.5,a significant improvement was observed for multiple kidney functional biomarkers,including GFRscr,BUN and UA,with a change of 0.42(95％confidence interval[CI]:0.06,0.78)mL/min/1.73m2,-0.38(-0.64,-0.12)mg/dL,and-0.06(-0.12,-0.00)mg/dL,respectively.A lower socioeconomic status,indicated by rural residence or low educational level,enhanced the adverse effect of PM2.5 on kidney *** results support a significant nephrotoxicity of PM2.5 based on multiple serum biomarkers and indicate a beneficial effect of improved air quality on kidney function.

Encoding and decoding models are widely used in systems, cognitive, and computational neuroscience to make sense of brain-activity data. However, the interpretation of their results requires care. Decoding models can help reveal whether particular information is present in a brain region in a format the decoder can exploit. Encoding models make comprehensive predictions about representational spaces. In the context of sensory experiments, where stimuli are experimentally controlled, encoding models enable us to test and compare brain-computational theories. Encoding and decoding models typically include fitted linear-model components. Sometimes the weights of the fitted linear combinations are interpreted as reflecting, in an encoding model, the contribution of different sensory features to the representation or, in a decoding model, the contribution of different measured brain responses to a decoded feature. Such interpretations can be problematic when the predictor variables or their noise components are correlated and when priors (or penalties) are used to regularize the fit. Encoding and decoding models are evaluated in terms of their generalization performance. The correct interpretation depends on the level of generalization a model achieves (e.g. to new response measurements for the same stimuli, to new stimuli from the same population, or to stimuli from a different population). Significant decoding or encoding performance of a single model (at whatever level of generality) does not provide strong constraints for theory. Many models must be tested and inferentially compared for analyses to drive theoretical progress. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The growing interest in improving software processes has led organizations to aim for high maturity, where statistical process control (SPC) is required. SPC makes it possible to analyze process behavior, predict process performance in future projects and monitor process performance against established goals. The selection of measures for SPC can be a challenging task. Although the literature suggests measures for SPC, information is fragmented. With an aim towards providing a consolidated set of measures for SPC, as well as processes and goals related to these measures, we investigated the literature through a systematic mapping. Following that, we applied a questionnaire to three professionals from Brazilian organizations to check whether the measures they have used in SPC initiatives could also be found in literature. In this paper we discuss our main findings related to the 47 goals, 15 processes and 84 measures identified considering the systematic mapping and the questionnaire results.

In this paper a new machine learning approach to the study of Multi-Relational Graphs as semantic data structures is presented. It shows how vector representations that maintain semantic and topological features of the original data can be obtained from neural encoding architectures and considering the topological properties of the graph. Also, semantic features of these new representations are tested by using some machine learning tasks and new directions on efficient link discovery methodologies on large relational datasets are investigated. © 2017 IEEE.

Learning, planning, and control in a monolithic neural event inference architecture

We introduce REPRISE, a REtrospective and PRospective Inference SchEme, which learns temporal event-predictive models of dynamical systems. REPRISE infers the unobservable contextual event state and accompanying temporal predictive models that best explain the recently encountered sensorimotor experiences retrospectively. Meanwhile, it optimizes upcoming motor activities prospectively in a goal-directed manner. Here, REPRISE is implemented by a recurrent neural network (RNN), which learns temporal forward models of the sensorimotor contingencies generated by different simulated dynamic vehicles. The RNN is augmented with contextual neurons, which enable the encoding of distinct, but related, sensorimotor dynamics as compact event codes. We show that REPRISE concurrently learns to separate and approximate the encountered sensorimotor dynamics: it analyzes sensorimotor error signals adapting both internal contextual neural activities and connection weight values. Moreover, we show that REPRISE can exploit the learned model to induce goal-directed, model-predictive control, that is, approximate active inference: Given a goal state, the system imagines a motor command sequence optimizing it with the prospective objective to minimize the distance to the goal. The RNN activities thus continuously imagine the upcoming future and reflect on the recent past, optimizing the predictive model, the hidden neural state activities, and the upcoming motor activities. As a result, event-predictive neural encodings develop, which allow the invocation of highly effective and adaptive goal-directed sensorimotor control. Copyright © 2018, The Authors. Risk analysis is a complex and critical activity in various contexts, ranging from strategic planning to IT systems operation. Given its complexity, several Enterprise Architecture (EA) frameworks and modeling languages have been developed to help analysts in representing and analyzing risks. Yet, the notion of risk remains overloaded and conceptually unclear in most of them. In this paper, we investigate the real-world semantics underlying risk-related constructs in one of such approaches, namely ArchiMate's Risk and Security Overlay (RSO). We perform this investigation by means of ontological analysis to reveal semantic limitations in the overlay, such as ambiguity and missing constructs. Building on the results of this analysis, we propose a well-founded redesign of the risk modeling aspects of the RSO.
