Security assessment and mitigation have gained considerable attention over the recent years according to the information technology evolution and its broad adoption. Organizations are more aware of their data security, and they also have become more exigent in terms of extensibility and flexibility of their Information Technology infrastructures. Cloud computing is introduced as an evolution of information technology that offers major solutions and techniques to meet the evolving requirements of both tenants and clients. Therefore, extensibility and dynamic adjustment, which are among the most essential Cloud advantages, can make the security analysis a very hard task. There have been many approaches to analyze automatically the cyber security of traditional IT infrastructures without taking into account the new Cloud features, such as the nested virtualization. Until now, there is a few work to assess the security of Cloud computing. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to design and develop Model-based Automated Security Assessment Tool named MASAT.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is an inherited cardiac disease characterized by an unexplained thickening of the heart ventricles. It is the first cause of sudden cardiac death in young adults. No reliable biomarkers for risk assessment have been presented so far, but the electrocardiograms of HCM patients are often abnormal due to structural and electrical abnormalities. The goal of our study was to extract morphological QRS biomarkers in order to discriminate between HCM patients and control patients by analyzing fifty 12-lead Holter recordings (29 HCM - 21 control). Morphological features such as QRS width or slopes from the QRS complex directly and the coefficients of the first four Hermite transform basis were extracted. Classification was then performed using those features in an L1 regularized logistic regression algorithm. Classification between control and HCM patients reached 95.7% of accuracy (sensitivity of 94.96% for HCM and specificity of 96.90%) using only two main features: the percentage of negative regions of the QRS complex with respect to the isoelectric level and the 3rd coefficient of its Hermite fitting showing interesting connections to cardiac electrophysiology.

This paper introduces a novel measuring approach for detecting relative movement between stump and socket in lower limb prostheses. The application of the motion capturing based measuring approach is shown at a single male trans-tibial amputee using a Patella Tendon Bearing (PTB) socket. It further investigates and assesses the feasibility of measuring the relative movement between stump and socket during level walking at different velocities and allocating it to the coinciding loads. Representative results for the two translational degrees of freedom in the sagittal plane are presented and discussed. For the proximodistal (pd) direction, a linear correlation between applied load and relative movement is found, while for the anteroposterior (ap) direction the stump movement is largely influenced by the motion sequence during the respective gait event. Additionally, the effect of walking speed is discussed.

Cloud computing offers scalable, elastic, on-demand access to a range of computational resources. Arguably, the time taken to obtain results from a simulation can limit the range and accuracy of experiments. Low cost cloud computing resources can potentially speedup simulation experimentation and produce more results more accurately. However, developing cloud computing solutions for industry is difficult without appropriate expertise. Working towards a general approach to cloud computing for simulation, this paper discusses how the CloudSME simulation Platform is providing a novel approach to cloud computing for modelling & simulation. An example of the agent-based modelling & simulation system REPAST is used to show how the platform can make it easy for end users to use the facilities of multiple clouds.

A rich program featuring keynotes, symposia, workshops, and tutorials, along with regular oral and poster sessions, offered the attendees a vivid and exciting overview of where the discipline is going while serving as a fertile forum of interdisciplinary discussion and exchange. Production of electricity and propulsion systems involve turbulent combustion. Computational modeling of turbulent combustion can improve the efficiency of these processes. However, large tensor datasets are the result of such simulations;these datasets are difficult to visualize and analyze. In this work we present an unsupervised statistical approach for the segmentation, visualization and potentially the tracking of regions of interest in large tensor data. The approach employs a machine learning clustering algorithm to locate and identify areas of interest based on specified parameters such as strain tensor value. Evaluation on two combustion datasets shows this approach can assist in the visual analysis of the combustion tensor field. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has rich physical properties with potential implications for both fundamental physics and new applications. To date, the main focus of applied research is to tune its optical properties, which is usually done via doping and/or nanoengineering. However, understanding the role of d electrons in materials and possible functionalization of d-electron properties are still major challenges. Herewith, within a combination of an innovative experimental technique, high-energy optical conductivity, and state-of-the-art ab initio electronic structure calculations, we report an emerging, novel resonant exciton in the deep ultraviolet region of the optical response. The resonant exciton evolves upon low-concentration Ta substitution in anatase TiO2 films. It is surprisingly robust and related to strong electron-electron and electron-hole interactions. The d- and f-orbital localization, due to Ta substitution, plays an unexpected role, activating strong electronic correlations and dominating the optical response under photoexcitation. Our results shed light on a new optical phenomenon in anatase TiO2 films and on the possibility of tuning electronic properties by Ta substitution.

Different techniques have been developed for capturing and retrieval, action recognition and video based reconstruction of human motion data in the past years. In this paper, we focus on how these techniques can be adapted to handle quadruped motion capture data and which new applications may appear. We discuss some particularities that must be considered during large animal motion capture. For retrieval, we derive suitable feature sets from quadrupeds motion capture data to perform fast searches for similar motions. Based on the retrieval techniques, the action recognition can be performed on the input motion capture sequences as well as on input video streams. We further present a data-driven approach to reconstruct quadruped motions from video data.

The multi-objective, multi-armed bandits (MOMABs) problem is a Markov decision process with stochastic rewards. Each arm generates a vector of rewards instead of a single reward and these multiple rewards might be conflicting. The agent has a set of optimal arms and the agent's goal is not only finding the optimal arms, but also playing them fairly. To find the optimal arm set, the agent uses a linear scalarized (LS) function which converts the multi-objective arms into one-objective arms. LS function is simple, however it can not find all the optimal arm set. As a result, we extend knowledge gradient (KG) policy to LS function. We propose two variants of linear scalarized-KG, LS-KG across arms and dimensions. We experimentally compare the two variant, LS-KG across arms finds the optimal arm set, while LS-KG across dimensions plays fairly the optimal arms.

Automated image-guided surgery for common and complex dental implants

Dental implantation is now recognized as a standard of care for replacing missing teeth. Pre-operative planning with patient-specific images provides the basis for precise surgery, but such accuracy is hampered to some degree because of the manual drilling procedures performed by the surgeon. In this paper, a robotic system for automated site preparation for dental implants is presented in order to provide high accuracy drilling. The results of some experiments are given to validate the system. Additionally, results are shown for jaw surgery that utilize natural-root-formed implants which can contain multiple roots. This more complex type of implant is impossible to drill manually but can provide better long-term stability and success. With this robotic system, controlled and accurate drilling was achieved, which made more advanced implant designs possible. © 2014 Informa UK Ltd.
