This paper presents in-plane crack problem in piezoelectric semiconductors under a transient thermal load. General boundary conditions and sample geometry are allowed in the proposed formulation. The governing partial differential equations for stresses, electric displacement field and current are satisfied in a local weak-form on small fictitious subdomains. All field quantities are approximated by the moving least-squares (MLS) scheme. After performing the spatial integrations, one obtains a system of ordinary differential equations for certain nodal unknowns. The influence of initial electron density on the intensity factors and energy release rate is investigated.

Recent studies show that the market share of smartphones continues to grow with over 60 percent U.S. mobile subscribers owning smartphones as of December 2013. Smartphones have matured as a computing platform and are now equipped with multiple low-energy sensors including gyroscope, compass, accelerometer, proximity sensor, and ambient light sensor. Even though researchers used data from cell phones before, they relied on GPS which has the disadvantages of low accuracy in urban canyons and depleting the phone battery quickly. In this paper, we use accelerometer data for inferring whether a vehicle is in motion or stopping (e.g., at a traffic light). Pattern recognition models are developed and tested with data collected from the field. The results show that stops can be effectively identified, with a limited number of false alarms. The developed techniques can support various applications including traffic monitoring, signal timing optimization, and emission prediction.

Nonparametric density estimation is a fundamental problem of statistics and data mining. Even though kernel density estimation is the most widely used method, its performance highly depends on the choice of the kernel bandwidth, and it can become computationally expensive for large data sets. WTe present an adaptive sparse-grid-based density estimation method which discretizes the estimated density function on basis functions centered at grid points rather than on kernels centered at the data points. Thus, the costs of evaluating the estimated density function are independent from the number of data points. We give details on how to estimate density functions on sparse grids and develop a cross validation technique for the parameter selection. We show numerical results to confirm that our sparse-grid-based method is well-suited for large data sets, and, finally, employ our method for the classification of astronomical objects to demonstrate that it is competitive to current kernel-based density estimation approaches with respect to classification accuracy and runtime. Probabilistic model checking extends traditional model checking by incorporating quantitative information about the probability of system transitions. However, probabilistic models that describe interesting behavior are often too complex for straightforward analysis. Abstraction is one way to deal with this complexity: instead of analyzing the ("concrete") model, a simpler ("abstract") model that preserves the relevant properties is built and analyzed. This paper surveys various abstraction techniques proposed in the past decade. For each abstraction technique we identify in what sense properties are preserved or provide alternatively suitable boundaries. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

In this paper, we investigate the implementation of the Block Conjugate Gradient (BCG) algorithm on CPU-GPU processors. By analyzing the performance of various matrix operations in BCG, we identify the main performance bottleneck in constructing new search direction matrices. Replacing the QR decomposition by eigendecomposition of a small matrix remedies the problem by reducing the computational cost of generating orthogonal search directions. Moreover, a hybrid (offload) computing scheme is designed to enables the BCG implementation to handle linear systems with large, sparse coefficient matrices that cannot fit in the GPU memory. The hybrid scheme offloads matrix operations to GPU processors while helps hide the CPU-GPU memory transaction overhead. We compare the performance of our BCG implementation with the one on CPU with Intel Xeon Phi coprocessors using the automatic offload mode. With sufficient number of right hand sides, the CPU-GPU implementation of BCG can reach speedup of 2.61 over the CPU-only implementation, which is significantly higher than that of the CPU-Intel Xeon Phi implementation.

This numerical study is based on the non linear dynamics consociated with synthetic jet with co-existence of circular cylinder. The time dependent fluid interaction, of two dimensional Synthetic Jet Actuator (SJA) is inspected using in-compressible Navier-Stokes equations. To exactly compute the flow due to synthetic jet, the pulsed diaphragm is designed as a moving boundary in a pragmatic mode. The parametric study has been systematized for various sweeps of the diaphragm amplitude and actuation frequency. Performance characteristics and vortex dynamics of the jet extracts interesting flow physics associated with these parameters. The unsteady actuation is able to influence the intrinsic instabilities of separating flows by controlling at lower frequencies. In the current study a detailed parametric study of a simplified configuration is investigated in order to diminution the drag.

Deterministic replay of a parallel application is commonly used for discovering bugs or to recover from a hard fault with message-logging fault tolerance. For message passing programs, a major source of overhead during forward execution is recording the order in which messages are sent and received. During replay, this ordering must be used to deterministically reproduce the execution. Previous work in replay algorithms often makes minimal assumptions about the programming model and application to maintain generality. However, in many applications, only a partial order must be recorded due to determinism intrinsic in the program, ordering constraints imposed by the execution model, and events that are commutative (their relative execution order during replay does not need to be reproduced exactly). In this paper, we present a novel algebraic framework for reasoning about the minimum dependencies required to represent the partial order for different orderings and interleavings. By exploiting this framework, we improve on an existing scalable message-logging fault tolerance scheme that uses a total order. The improved scheme scales to 131,072 cores on an IBM BlueGene/P with up to 2× lower overhead.

Air pollution contributes to the premature deaths of millions of people each year around the world, and air quality problems are growing in many developing nations. While past policy efforts have succeeded in reducing particulate matter and trace gases in North America and Europe, adverse health effects are found at even these lower levels of air pollution. Future policy actions will benefit from improved understanding of the interactions and health effects of different chemical species and source categories. Achieving this new understanding requires air pollution scientists and engineers to work increasingly closely with health scientists. In particular, research is needed to better understand the chemical and physical properties of complex air pollutant mixtures, and to use new observations provided by satellites, advanced in situ measurement techniques, and distributed micro monitoring networks, coupled with models, to better characterize air pollution exposure for epidemiological and toxicological research, and to better quantify the effects of specific source sectors and mitigation strategies. © 2016 American Chemical Society.

This paper describes experiences in the first year of running final year modeling & simulation (M&S) undergraduate projects with The Hillingdon Hospitals, a large UK National Health Service (NHS) Hospital Trust. Our approach used project- and problem-based learning in a group context with emphasis on the student's responsibility for the execution of their project. As part of their ***. (HONS) Business Computing course, the students had taken a module on Business Process modeling and simulation during their second year. The student group was supported by two facilitators with help from two simulation researchers. Each student worked with a stakeholder in a variety of clinical service settings to create conceptual models, business process models and discrete-event simulations. The projects helped stakeholders to reflect on how their services might be improved, highlighted new areas of investigation, raised awareness of M&S at Hillingdon Hospital and equipped students with real-world M&S skills and experience.
