The National Airspace System (NAS) must be improved to increase capacity, reduce flight delays, and minimize environmental impacts of air travel. NASA has been tasked with aiding the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in NAS modernization. Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) is an enabling technology that is fundamental to realization of the Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen). Despite the 2020 FAA mandate requiring ADS-B Out equipage, airspace users are lacking incentives to equip with the requisite ADS-B avionics. A need exists to validate in flight tests advanced concepts of operation (ConOps) that rely on ADS-B and other data links without requiring costly equipage. A potential solution is presented in this paper. It is possible to emulate future data link capabilities using the existing in-flight Internet and reduced-cost test equipment. To establish proof-of-concept, a high-fidelity traffic operations simulation was modified to include a module that simulated Internet transmission of ADS-B messages. An advanced NASA ConOp, Flight Deck Interval Management (FIM), was used to evaluate technical feasibility. A preliminary assessment of the effects of latency and dropout rate on FIM was performed. Flight hardware that would be used by proposed test environment was connected to the simulation so that data transfer from aircraft systems to test equipment could be verified. The results indicate that the FIM ConOp, and therefore, many other advanced ConOps with equal or lesser response characteristics and data requirements, can be evaluated in flight using the proposed concept.

This paper analyzes the survey result on the information security requirement for smart grid. The survey was conducted via distributing questionnaires. Descriptive analysis has successfully ranked the information security consumer requirements with the compass of mean and standard deviation. Privacy concern becomes the most important element among the other fifteen requirements. Result showed that the philosophy category has the most powerful impact on consumer trust and satisfaction, because the philosophy and strategy of management with regard to information security is the perfect standard against which technology and other security mechanisms can be measured. This paper gives insight on a picture of smart grid system information security future direction. © 2012 IEEE.

simulation and modeling of turbulent flow, and of turbulent reacting flow in particular, involves solving for and analyzing time-dependent and spatially dense tensor quantities, such as turbulent stress tensors. The interactive visual exploration of these tensor quantities can effectively steer the computational modeling of combustion systems. In this chapter, we discuss the challenges in dense symmetric-tensor visualization applied to turbulent combustion calculation, and analyze the feasibility of using several established tensor visualization techniques in the context of exploring space-time relationships in computationally-simulated combustion tensor data. To tackle the pervasive problems of occlusion and clutter, we propose a solution combining techniques from information and scientific visualization. Specifically, the proposed solution combines a detailed 3D inspection view based on volume rendering with glyph-based representations—used as 2D probes—while leveraging interactive filtering and flow salience cues to clarify the structure of the tensor datasets. Side-by-side views of multiple timesteps facilitate the analysis of time-space relationships. The resulting prototype enables an analysis style based on the overview first, zoom and filter, then details on demand paradigm originally proposed in information visualization. The result is a visual analysis tool to be utilized in debugging, benchmarking, and verification of models and solutions in turbulent combustion. We demonstrate this analysis tool on three example configurations and report feedback from combustion researchers. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2012.

We will investigate the optimal control strategy of an SIR epidemic model with time delay in state and control variables. We use a vaccination program to minimize the number of susceptible and infected individuals and to maximize the number of recovered individuals. Existence for the optimal control is established; Pontryagin’s maximum principle is used to characterize this optimal control, and the optimality system is solved by a discretization method based on the forward and backward difference approximations. The numerical simulation is carried out using data regarding the course of influenza A (H1N1) in Morocco. The obtained results confirm the performance of the optimization strategy.

This paper presents the design of the lightweight BioRob manipulator with spring-loaded tendon-driven actuation developed for safe physical human-robot interaction. The safety of the manipulator is analyzed by an analytical worst-case estimation of impact and clamping forces in the absence of collision detection. As intrinsic joint compliance can pose a threat by storing energy, a safety evaluation method is proposed taking the potential energy stored in the elastic actuation into account. The evaluation shows that the robot arm design constrains the worst case clamping forces to only 25 N, while being able to handle loads up to 2 kg, and inherits extremely low impact properties, such as an effective mass of less than 0.4 kg in non near-singular configurations, enabling safe operation even in case of high velocities. The results are validated in simulation and experiments.

A smart grid project necessitates consumer's affirmation to function, which indirectly requires their trust. This study takes account on consumer's consensus via questionnaire survey. First, importance of information security systems in the smart grid is abstracted. Then characters of functional requirements are identified, analyzed and discussed. Based on the proposed model, the identified information security requirements of smart grid are studied and summarized. From the descriptive ranking, consumer is longing of feeling secure while adopting the comprehensive and multilayered of the great smart grid. From the simple lattice ordering result, rule base social system category has the most powerful impact on consumer trust and satisfaction. But in the interlinking, there lays philosophy. This study advanced smart grid information security functionality by developing an innovative set of functional requirements target to enhance next-generation technologies and tools in the areas of transmission, distribution, energy storage, power electronics and cyber security. The smart grid that consumer perceived is user friendly, sense of security and; easy to understand and operate.

This paper proposes a novel variable torsion stiffness (VTS) aiming on biomechanical applications like prosthetic knee joints. By varying the effective length of a torsional elastic element via a relocatable counter bearing, the stiffness of a rotational joint is adjusted. This functional concept is described in detail by the authors as well as the design of such VTS joints. Additionally, analytical models for the transfer behaviour of drivetrain and stiffness control are derived. These are used for a simulative evaluation of a pendulum driven by a VTS unit. Based on the results of this simulation, the power requirements of VTS are analysed. Furthermore, an analysis of its structural strength is presented. For practical comprehensibility, the example of the design of a prosthetic knee joint is taken up for several times in this paper. Finally, the concept, modeling and design of VTS as well as the simulation results are concluded and discussed in a final assessment and in comparison to other contemporary concepts.
