After an amputation, processes of change in the body image as well as a change in body scheme have direct influences on the quality of living in every patient. Within this paper, a paradigm of experimental induced body illusion (the Rubber Hand Illusion, RHI) is integrated in a prosthetic hardware simulator concept. This concept combines biodynamical and visual feedback to enhance the quality of rehabilitation and to integrate patients' needs into the development of prostheses aiming on user-centered solutions. Therefore, user-centered design parameters are deducted. Furthermore, the basic concept of the visual simulation is presented and a possibility for its implementation is given. Finally, issues and conclusions for future work are described.

In this paper, a novel biomechanical modeling and simulation environment with an emphasis on user-specific customization is presented. A modular modeling approach for multi-body systems allows a flexible extension by specific biomechanical modeling elements and enables an efficient application in dynamic simulation and optimization problems. A functional distribution of model description and model parameter data in combination with standardized interfaces enables a simple and reliable replacement or modification of specific functional components. The user-specific customization comprises the identification of anthropometric model parameters as well as the generation of a virtual three-dimensional character. The modeling and simulation environment is associated with Prosthesis-User-in-the-Loop, a hardware simulator concept for the design and optimization of lower limb prosthetic devices based on user experience and assessment. For a demonstration of the flexibility and capability of the modeling and simulation environment, an exemplary application in context of the hardware simulator is given.

We present a novel approach for spectral unmixing in hyperspectral imagery called local linear spectral unmixing (LLSU). Our new proposal relies on an existing strategy for non-linear data modelling where a general non-linear model is approximated via several piece-wise linear models. The algorithm is the result of hybridizing two well-known strategies for exploratory high-dimensional data analysis: cluster analysis and non-negative matrix factorization. It has been proposed to answer the limitations of global linear unmixing models which are widely used for spectral unmixing. Our strategy is to first group similar pixels from the hyperspctral image via cluster analysis and then to consider a local linear unmixing model for each cluster in order to obtain the constituent endmembers. Subsequently, the resulted local endmembers from each cluster of mixed pixels are at their turn clustered based on their spectral similarity;the final solution is given by the clusters' centroids.

We present a first version of an algorithm producing autonomously responses in wireless sensor networks in order to mitigate detected malfunction and misbehavior. We were inspired by the low level mechanisms for response conformation, the degenerate behavior of receptors, of T-cells in the human immune system. The proposed algorithm uses a co-stimulatory feedback in order to adapt to changing conditions, thus enabling the system to choose a different response when appropriate. We evaluate the algorithm on a simulation model in OMNet++ and demonstrate its applicability for wireless sensor networks. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

In this paper, an efficient behavior for a humanoid soccer robot supporting a teammate manipulating the ball is proposed and evaluated. This approach has been derived from human soccer tactics, requires only minimal information about the current state of the game and is therefore well suited for robots with directed vision and limited motion abilities like humanoid robots. The position of the supporter is chosen in a way to reduce the chances of the opponent team for scoring a goal and to increase the chances of the robot to take over the role of its teammate manipulating ball in case the teammate falls down or is being dodged by the opponent team. By different parameterizations more defensive or more offensive player tactics can be realized as well as adaptations to specific tactics and skills of the opposing robot players. The developed behavior was evaluated in a simulation based statistical analysis. Also an evaluation in games during RoboCup 2009 is given. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2011.

Every agent in a society initially possesses a set of personal norms. group norms emerge when agents interact with one another and exchange information in such a way that multiple agents begin to acquire the same personal norm. This emergence is the result of information transmission, social enforcement, and internalization. If a population contains a single group norm, as a result of every agent in the population acquiring the same personal norm, then it can be said that a consensus has been reached by the population. We model the formation of consensus in silico by adapting a recently developed model of norm emergence to a multi-agent simulation. A screening experiment is conducted to identify the significant parameters of our model and verify that our model is capable of producing a consensus. The experimental results show that our model can attain consensus as well as two additional states of information equilibrium. The results also indicate that both network structure and agent behavior play an important role in the formation of consensus. In addition, it is shown that the formation of consensus is sensitive to the simulation parameter settings, and certain values can prevent its formation entirely.

As imaging, computing, and data storage technologies improve, there is an increasing opportunity for multiscale analysis of three-dimensional datasets (3-D). Such analysis enables, for example, microscale elements of multiple macroscale specimens to be compared throughout the entire macroscale specimen. Spatial comparisons require bringing datasets into co-alignment. One approach for co-alignment involves elastic deformations of data in addition to rigid alignments. The elastic deformations distort space, and if not accounted for, can distort the information at the microscale. The algorithms developed in this work address this issue by allowing multiple data points to be encoded into a single image pixel, appropriately tracking each data point to ensure lossless data mapping during elastic spatial deformation. This approach was developed and implemented for both 2-D and 3-D registration of images. Lossless reconstruction and registration was applied to semi-quantitative cellular gene expression data in the mouse brain, enabling comparison of multiple spatially registered 3-D datasets without any augmentation of the cellular data. Standard reconstruction and registration without the lossless approach resulted in errors in cellular quantities of ～ 8%.

Although the first use of radar was for military purposes, radar technology has been introduced into many other fields including weather analysis. Today, radar is the primary tool for weather forecasting. To cover local, national, and global weather conditions timely and accurately, more powerful radar system is in need. Recent studies indicate that newly introduced multicore distributed architecture can provide high processing speed required by modern radar systems. In spite of the fact that multicore architecture improves performance, it poses some serious challenges including execution time unpredictability which is not acceptable for real-time weather analysis. In this work, we model and simulate a popular Intel-like multicore architecture with Miss Table (MT) and investigate the effectiveness of the multicore architectures for real-time severe weather analysis. Miss Table holds information about block addresses and helps improve execution time predictability and performance/power ratio. Experimental results show that execution time predictability can be further improved by applying techniques like cache locking with Miss Table. Therefore, we find multicore architecture with Miss Table very promising for future radar systems for real-time severe weather analysis. In addition, this kind of powerful radar systems can have significant role in assessing global climate change and developing future defense applications.

Although modeling and simulation is successfully applied for several decades, the community only established a handful of M&S specific standards. Although the standards were applied enabling worldwide distributed simulation applications, in particular in the training application domain of military simulation systems, the general success of M&S standard efforts and their potential for general applicability has been debated repeatedly during several conferences and workshop. This collection of position statements discusses related questions, such as, "What makes M&S special that we need M&S standards," "Are M&S standards truly different from Software Engineering Standards," and "What metrics can be used to measure M&S standard success," and tries to contribute to establishing a methodological approach to identify future M&S standard needs. These position statements have been contributed in preparation of a panel discussion and edited for the supporting proceedings. © 2011 IEEE.

Clinical symptoms of gastrointestinal (GI) infections are often caused by the inflammatory response elicited to eliminate the invading microbe. Here we present ENISI, a simulator of GI immune mechanisms in response to resident commensal bacteria as well as invading pathogens and the effect on host clinical symptoms. ENISI is a tool for identifying treatment strategies that reduce inflammation-induced damage and, at the same time, ensure pathogen removal by allowing one to test plausibility of in vitro observed behavior as explanations for observations in vivo, propose behaviors not yet tested in vitro that could explain these tissue-level observations, and conduct low-cost, preliminary experiments of proposed interventions/ treatments. An example of such application is shown in which we simulate dysentery resulting from B. hyodysenteriae infection and identify aspects of the host immune pathways that lead to continued inflammation-induced tissue damage even after pathogen elimination.
