The cascaded transmission line theory is used in this paper to predict near end crosstalk (NEXT) and far end crosstalk (FEXT) in a bundle of twisted wire pairs (TWP). The approach is validated using both, the available data in the literature and also using the CST Cable Studio ® commercial software. NEXT and FEXT along twisted pair bundles are then evaluated using a pure deterministic approach for the electromagnetic coupling while taking into account the random distribution of disturbed and disturbing pairs in the bundle. The results obtained using the presented approach are compared with available simplified empirical expressions (ANSI/FSAN). It is shown that the simplified expressions are able to predict the overall trend of the power sum loss. However, they do not always provide the worst-case values. The presented theory can find important applications in the design of next generation data transmission systems for which accurate crosstalk modeling is a vital task. It can be used for example as a replacement of the experiments in obtaining the parameters of simplified models for NEXT and FEXT.

Although modeling and simulation is successfully applied for several decades, the community only established a handful of M&S specific standards. Although the standards were applied enabling worldwide distributed simulation applications, in particular in the training application domain of military simulation systems, the general success of M&S standard efforts and their potential for general applicability has been debated repeatedly during several conferences and workshop. This collection of position statements discusses related questions, such as, “What makes M&S special that we need M&S standards,” “Are M&S standards truly different from Software Engineering Standards,” and “What metrics can be used to measure M&S standard success,” and tries to contribute to establishing a methodological approach to identify future M&S standard needs. These position statements have been contributed in preparation of a panel discussion and edited for the supporting proceedings.

Real-Time pedestrian simulation for open-world games involves aggressive behavior simplification and culling to keep computational cost under control, but it is diffficult to predict whether these techniques will become unrealistic in certain situations. We propose a method of perceptually simulating highly realistic pedestrian behavior in virtual cities in realtime. Designers build a highly realistic simulation, from which a perceptually identical "perceptual simulation" is generated. Although the perceptual simulation simulates only a small portion of the world at a time, and does so with inexpensive approximations, it can be statistically guaranteed that the results are perceptually indistinguishable from those of the original simulation. Following the successful WCET Tool Challenges in 2006 and 2008, the third event in this series was organized in 2011, again with support from the ARTIST DESIGN Network of Excellence. Following the practice established in the previous Challenges, the WCET Tool Challenge 2011 (WCC'11) defined two kinds of problems to be solved by the Challenge participants with their tools, WCET problems, which ask for bounds on the execution time, and flow-analysis problems, which ask for bounds on the number of times certain parts of the code can be executed. The benchmarks to be used in WCC'11 were debie1, PapaBench, and an industrial-strength application from the automotive domain provided by Daimler. Two default execution platforms were suggested to the participants, the ARM7 as "simple target" and the MPC5553/5554 as a "complex target," but participants were free to use other platforms as well. Ten tools participated in WCC'11: aiT, Astrée, Bound-T, FORTAS, METAMOC, OTAWA, SWEET, TimeWeaver, TuBound and WCA.

We present the attributed π-calculus for modeling concurrent systems with interaction constraints depending on the values of attributes of processes. The λ-calculus serves as a constraint language underlying the π-calculus. Interaction constraints subsume priorities, by which to express global aspects of populations. We present a non-deterministic and a stochastic semantics for the attributed π-calculus. We show how to encode the π-calculus with priorities and polyadic synchronization π-@ and thus dynamic compartments, as well as the stochastic π-calculus with concurrent objects spico. We illustrate the usefulness of the attributed π-calculus for modeling biological systems at two particular examples: Euglena's spatial movement in phototaxis, and cooperative protein binding in gene regulation of bacteriophage lambda. Furthermore, population-based model is supported beside individual-based modeling. A stochastic simulation algorithm for the attributed π-calculus is derived from its stochastic semantics. We have implemented a simulator and present experimental results, that confirm the practical relevance of our approach. © 2010 Springer.

On-Chip traffic modeling is a new research topic that came along with Network on Chip (NoC) design. On-chip traffic varies in rate and nature depending on the running application and the System on Chip components. Different traffic models have been proposed as an attempt to capture the various transactions that occur inside the NoC, which connects different Intellectual Properties (IPs) on the same chip. In this research paper, recent traffic modeling paradigms will be reviewed and discussed. These models have been developed into traffic generator entities to emulate the traffic patterns on chip. However, none of these models (and hence traffic generators) completely capture the behavior of different applications and the interactions between different IPs components on chip, which can alter the traffic state and rate. In this paper, we will propose a comprehensive and flexible model that is based on Discrete EVent System Specification formalisms (DEVS) for modeling and simulation. Our model could be implemented as a traffic generator that has three internal functions, and input and output ports for the interactions with other IPs components such as caches, DSP units, etc.

Interactive node-link diagrams are useful for describing and exploring data relationships in many domains such as network analysis and transportation planning. We describe a multi-touch interaction technique set (IT set) that focuses on edge interactions for node-link diagrams. The set includes five techniques (TouchPlucking, TouchPinning, TouchStrum-ming, TouchBundling and PushLens) and provides the flexibility to combine them in either sequential or simultaneous actions in order to address edge congestion. © 2010 ACM.

This paper introduces the Chemnitz Hybrid Evolutionary Optimization System to the scientific community. CHEOPS is a non-standard, high-performance genetic algorithm framework allowing simple as well as advanced modes of operation. Universal genetic algorithms well-suited for solving both single- and multi-objective optimization problems are still a matter of serious research. The Omni Optimizer was a milestone in that research topic, but now it is dramatically outperformed by CHEOPS in single-objective optimization. The comparison should soon continue, because CHEOPS will be straightforwardly enhanced to solve multi-objective problems as well.

We present Open Review, a web-based platform aimed at stimulating executable papers by means of post-publication peer-review. Its goal is to bring computer science researchers to collaboratively build their work upon previous research results, in such a way that transparency, reproducibility and sustainability of research results are greatly improved. The main design goals of the platform are clarity, conciseness, and reproducibility. Its main features are to: (i) provide incentives for making research communities to participate, (ii) make papers executable by means of boards’ annotations, without necessarily involving the authors of an article, and (iii) give snapshots of the current research state on any given article.
