The pressure-induced phase transition in strontium, including the recent experimental observation of high-pressure phase Sr-IV, was investigated theoretically using the projector augmented wave method. We also concentrated on the experimentally observed β-tin structure as this structure has never been found in any other alkaline-earth metals. The fcc-bcc phase transition was reproduced, but Sr-IV was found to be energetically more stable than the β-tin structure at all pressures. By considering enthalpy, the sequence of the phase transitions along the pressure range is fcc→bcc→Sr-IV. With some detailed examination, we concluded that the β-tin structure is either a metastable state or a coexisting phase, and further experimental investigation is suggested.

Hybrid agent-landscape models are used as an environment in which to study humans, the environment, and their dynamics. To provide flexibility in model design, expressiveness, and modification, the environment models and human agent models should be developed independently. While retaining each model's individuality, the models can be composed to create a model of a complex, hybrid agent-landscape system. This should allow for a much more in-depth analysis of each model independently, as well as a study of their interactions. To create such a modeling environment requires a look beyond a simple interface between two models. It may require that the models' formalisms be composed, their execution be synchronized, their architectures be integrated, and a common visualization be created to provide a whole-system data view during simulation. This paper discusses the complexities of such an undertaking.

Co-design modeling is considered key toward handling the complexity and scale of network systems. The ability to separately specify the software and hardware aspects of computer network systems offers new capabilities beyond what is supported in modeling frameworks and tools such as NS-2 and OPNET. The DEVS/DOC simulation environment supports logical co-design specification based on the distributed object computing (DOC) abstract model. To overcome DEVS/DOC's lack of support for visual and persistent modeling, this paper presents SESM/DOC, a novel approach, which is based on the scaleable entity structure modeler (SESM), a component-based modeling framework. This approach supports logical, visual and persistent modeling. Modelers can develop software and hardware models separately and systematically integrate them to specify a family of computer network system designs. This paper details the SESM/DOC co-design modeling approach with the help of a search engine system example, and presents a discussion for future research directions.

It is a common practice to use simulation for validating different types of control and planning algorithms. However, the science of how to rigorously integrate simulation and decision models is not well understood and becomes critically important as the complexity and scale of these models increase. In our research, we have developed a methodology for integrating different types of models using a Knowledge Interchange Broker (KIB). In this paper we describe a supply-chain semiconductor application where the KIB has been used as an integral part of developing and deploying a commercial Model Predictive Control model for use in operating a multi-billion dollar supply chain. The simulation based experiments facilitated developing and validating the controller design and data automation for a real-world semiconductor manufacturing system.

The development of a control approach for a novel, soundless, lightweight and multifunctional shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator scalable in force and length for personal assistance or home-help robots is presented in this paper. The SMA actuator is based on lightweight bundles of thin wires of prestrained shape memory alloy that change their length when heated above their transformation temperature. The design approach of the actuator allows arranging the point of actuation in any direction and ensures a short cool down time to guarantee a frequency of contraction/stress cycles that is high enough to allow fast joint motions. This is needed for the generation of fast joint motions. For the use of the actuator the novel control approach has been experimentally validated. The approach uses the resistance of the actuator as a linear position encoder and there are no additional external sensors needed. The application of the new actuator to a novel lightweight humanoid robot is outlined. One advantage of the actuator over electric motors lies in the large variety of user-defined points of actuation of the in pull-force and length free scalable actuators and the high power-to-weight ratio. The results demonstrate that it is possible to build a large humanoid robot actuated with SMA actuator in a new way.
