The software framework RoboFrame has been designed to meet the special requirements for teams of lightweight autonomous heterogeneous robot systems. Due to platform abstraction and modern object oriented design, it allows the reuse of components of common robot control software. It can also efficiently be implemented on new platforms and enables different control architectures for different tasks. For the exemplary application in autonomous robot soccer teams configurable and portable algorithms for vision, world modeling, behavior and motion control have been developed on top of the framework. For debugging, controlling and monitoring, an extendable graphical user interface and a generic simulator package have been implemented around the framework. Based on these instruments, different applications for homogeneous and heterogeneous robot teams can be realized in short time.

Frequency-domain macromodeling tools are of paramount importance for the design and study of microwave structures. In this paper, a reliable identification method, called orthormal vector fitting method, is combined with a relaxation constraint. This leads to more accurate fitting models, in a limited amount of computation time, especially if the spectral data is contaminated with noise. Its performance is analyzed on a measurement-based example and compared to other existing approaches in the field.

Dynamic data-driven application systems (DDDAS) integrate computer simulations with experimental observations to study phenomena with greater speed and accuracy than could be achieved by either experimentation or simulation alone. One of the key challenges behind DDDAS is automatically adapting simulations when experimental data indicates that a simulation must change. Coercion is a semi-automated simulation adaptation approach that can be automated further if elements of the simulation called flexible points are described in advance. In this paper, we use a number of DDDAS adaptation examples to identify the information that needs to be captured about flexible points in order to support coercion

Monte Carlo is a powerful and versatile derivative pricing tool, with the main drawback of requiring a large amount of computing time to generate enough realisations of the stochastic process. However, since realisations are independent from each other, the task is "embarassingly" parallel and the workload can be easily distributed on a large set of processors without the need for fast networking and thus an expensive dedicated supercomputer. Such an alternative, much cheaper and more accessible way can be realised with the BOINC toolkit, distributing the Monte Carlo runs on networked clients running under Windows, Linux or various Unix variants, and recollecting the results at the end for a statistical evaluation of the price distribution at the final time. Though it is likely that the clients will belong to the intranet of a large company or institution, we gave our program the evocative name City@home in honour of the paradigmatic SETI@home project. As an application, we present the generation of synthetic high frequency financial time series for speculative option valuation in the context of uncoupled continuous-time random walks (fractional diffusion), with a Lévy marginal density function for the tick-by-tick log returns and a Mittag-Leffler marginal density function for the waiting times. Lévy deviates are generated with the Chambers-Mallows-Stuck method, Mittag-Leffler deviates with the Kozubowski-Pakes method. © Copyright owned by the author(s) under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Licence.

Students wishing to become experts in modeling and simulation (M&S) need to appreciate limitations of the technology. Our goal is to expose students to the current boundaries of simulation technology. To achieve this, we propose the incorporation of grand challenge case studies into a modeling and simulation curriculum. Grand challenge problems are defined as problems for which there does not exist a universally accepted solution (at present). We argue that grand challenge case studies are an excellent vehicle for discovering and appreciating current boundaries of M&S technology. We present three candidate case studies, one in detail - the ongoing U.S. department of Energy analysis of Yucca Mountain as a location for nuclear waste storage with supporting discussion about how these cases can enhance exploration of the challenges in M&S technology. We discuss the proposed Yucca Mountain storage facility, along with two other case studies, and examine their integration into M&S curricula

OPTIMAL TASK ALLOCATION AND DYNAMIC TRAJECTORY PLANNING FOR MULTI-VEHICLE SYSTEMS USING NONLINEAR HYBRID OPTIMAL CONTROL

Based on a nonlinear hybrid dynamical systems model a new planning method for optimal coordination and control of multiple unmanned vehicles is investigated. The time dependent hybrid state of the overall system consists of discrete (roles, actions) and continuous (e.g. position, orientation, velocity) state variables of the vehicles involved. The evolution in time of the system's hybrid state is described by a hybrid state automaton. The presented approach enables a tight and formal coupling of discrete and continuous state dynamics, i.e. of dynamic role and action assignment and sequencing as well as of the physical motion dynamics of a single vehicle modeled by nonlinear differential equations. The planning problem of determining optimal hybrid state trajectories that minimize a cost function as time or energy for optimal multi-vehicle cooperation subject to constraints including the vehicle's motion dynamics is transformed to a mixed-binary dynamic optimization problem being solved numerically. The numerical method consists of an inner iteration where multiphase optimal control problems are solved using a direct collocation method and an outer iteration based on a branch-and-bound search of the discrete solution space. The approach presented in this paper is applied to the scenarios of optimal simultaneous waypoint or target sequencing and dynamic trajectory planning for a team of unmanned aerial vehicles in a plane and to optimal role assignment and physics-based trajectories in robot soccer.

It is well-known that the vector fitting algorithm suffers from convergence problems when fitting noisy frequency responses. These difficulties are caused by the use of a Sanathanan-Koerner iteration. This paper presents an alternative iteration framework, applied to the orthonormal vector fitting technique. The convergence properties of this method are analysed and compared to the classical vector fitting iteration scheme
