How much effort will be required to compose or reuse simulations? What factors need to be considered? It is generally known that composability and reusability are daunting challenges for both simulations and more broadly software design as a whole. We have conducted a small case study in order to clarify the role that model context plays in simulation composability and reusability. For a simple problem: compute the position and velocity of a falling body, we found that a reasonable formulation of a solution included a surprising number of implicit constraints. Equally surprising, in a challenge posed to a small group of capable individuals, no one of them was able to identify more than three-quarters of the ultimate set of validation constraints. We document the challenge, interpret its results, and discuss the utility our study will have in future investigations into simulation composition and reuse.

In today's interconnected networks, intrusion detection systems (IDSs), encryption devices, firewalls and other hardware and software solutions are critical in providing complete security solutions for corporations and government agencies. Many IDS variants exist which allow security personnel to identify attack network packets primarily through the use of signature detection where the IDS "recognizes" attack packets due to their well-known signatures as those packets cross the network's gateway threshold. However, anomaly-based ID systems identify normal traffic within a network and report abnormal behavior. We report the findings of our research in the area of anomaly-based intrusion detection systems using data-mining techniques to create a decision tree model of our network using the 1999 DARPA intrusion detection evaluation data set. After the model was created, we gathered data from our local campus network and scored the new data through the model using both packet-based and session-based modeling and compare the results.

The dynamics of an ensemble of linear disturbances in boundary-layer flows at various Reynolds numbers is studied through an analysis of the transport equations for the mean disturbance kinetic energy and energy dissipation rate. Effects of adverse and favorable pressure-gradients on the disturbance dynamics are also included in the analysis. Unlike the fully turbulent regime where nonlinear phase scrambling of the fluctuations affects the flow field even in proximity to the wall, the early stage transition regime fluctuations studied here are influenced across the boundary layer by the solid boundary. The dominating dynamics in the disturbance kinetic energy and dissipation rate equations are described. These results are then used to formulate transition-sensitized turbulent transport equations, which are solved in a two-step process and applied to zero-pressure-gradient flow over a flat plate. Computed results are in good agreement with experimental data.

The growing complexity of MEMS devices and their increased used in embedded systems (e.g., wireless integrated sensor networks) demands a disciplined approach for MEMS design as well as the development of techniques for system-level modeling of these devices so that a seamless integration with the existing embedded system design methodologies is possible. In this paper, we present a MEMS design methodology that uses VHDL-AMS based system-level model of a MEMS device as a starting point and combines the top-down and bottom-up design approaches for design, verification, and optimization. simulation modeling combined with decision control can offer important benefits for analysis, design, and operation of semiconductor supply-chain network systems. Detailed simulation of physical processes provides information for its controller to account for (expected) stochasticity present in the manufacturing processes. In turn, the controller can provide (near) optimal decisions for the operation of the processes and thus handle uncertainty in customer demands. In this paper, we describe an environment that synthesizes discrete-event system specification (DEVS) with model predictive control (MPC) paradigms using a knowledge interchange broker (KIB). This environment uses the KIB to compose discrete event simulation and model predictive control models. This approach to composability affords flexibility for studying semiconductor supply-chain manufacturing at varying levels of detail. We describe a hybrid DEVS/MPC environments via a knowledge interchange broker. We conclude with a comparison of this work with another that employs the Simulink/MATLAB environment.

modeling and simulation has become a driving force within the engineering and science communities as the cost of, and time for, experimentation continues to rise. Some areas of study, such as chemistry and biology, may not even have the ability to fully evaluate certain processes experimentally, making modeling and simulation even more important. The situation has led many areas of research to the necessity of modeling and simulating various processes using computers. In addition, the rise in computational capabilities (the supercomputers of a decade ago are outmoded by the PC clusters of today), has led to a paradigm shift from using the computer resources only available to a few researchers to a tool now available to many people. Researchers at the U.S. Air Force Academy are working to bring these modeling and simulation tools into the classroom and laboratories for students to learn the capabilities, and limitations, of modern computational tools. Descriptions of how modeling and simulation is performed at the Academy are included, as well as details about the computational resources being used. Most importantly, descriptions of the methods used to bring these tools to the classroom are described in detail.

Structural changes, i.e. the creation and deletion of components, and the change of interactions are salient features of adaptive systems. To model and specify these systems, variable structure models are required, i.e. models that entail in their own description the possibility to change their structure. To execute these models, a simulator with a clear semantic of intertwining structural and non-structural changes is required. In JAMES (Java-based agent modeling environment for simulation), different simulator components, e.g., for paced, unpaced, sequential, and parallel simulation, support the continuous use of models and simulation from specification to testing and a composition of the simulation engine on demand. Two types of simulator components for variable structure models are developed and integrated into the simulation layer; the implications are discussed.

On the Need for Contextualized Introspective Models to Improve Reuse and Composability of Defense simulations

Model reuse is a longstanding challenge within the defense simulation modeling community. While other disciplines successfully apply component-based approach to build systems, this approach has proven difficult to apply in simulation model development. The significance of employing explicit and distinct experimental frames to support reuse is already well recognized. Yet, characterization of the original context of a model is one of the least appreciated aspects and central to reuse and composability. Methods and tools are needed to provide mechanisms for structured representation and storage of context information, effective ways for retrieving it, and the possibility to relate it to the developer's intention. To this end, the basic model-simulator-experimental frame viewpoint is revisited to assert the role of context in reuse. The significance of separating concept, content, context, and simulator is discussed under the discrete-event system specification (DEVS) framework to provide a basis and rationale for contextualized simulation models. An abstract design strategy is presented to facilitate packaging and distribution of concept and context specification objects along with simulation models to improve reuse and composability. © 2004, The Society for modeling and simulation International. Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is a critical reliability concern for microchips. This paper presents a computer-aided design tool for ESD protection design and applications. Specifically, we develop an improved and robust MOS model and implement such a model into the industry standard Cadence SPICE for ESD circuit simulation. Experimental data measured from the transmission line pulsing (TLP) technique and human body model (HBM) tester are included in support of the model.

This paper studies the performance of several different physical clearing mechanisms in the electricity market. The study is done using the simulation tool, Marketecture, developed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Two cities, Portland and Chicago, are used for simulating the physical clearing algorithms. The algorithms were chosen according to their ability to serve as a proxy for some of the well known policies. Our results show that, based on the economic measures chosen, both cities perform very similarly under the different physical clearing mechanisms.
