His other interests include neural networks artificial intelligence and intelligent agents. Dr. Anton received a U.S. degree in Computer Engineering from UCLA and an M.S. degree and a Ph.D in Computational Neuroscience from the University of California. Irvine After finishing nuclear power training Mr. McAdow served as an Engineering Department Division Officer on USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN 658). He then worked as a civilian far the Naval Coastal Systems Center and then far Martin Marietta Aero and Naval Systems in the development of various submarine systems and unmanned undersea vehicles. David Smith:has been a member of the technical staff at MITRE s Advanced Information Technologies center since 1993. He has a B.S. degree in Computer Science and Mathematics from Albright College and an M.S. degree in Information and Computer Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Paul Lehner:is a part-time Principal Scientist in the MITRE Advanced Information Technologies Center. In addition. Dr. Lehner is an Associate Professor of Systems Engineering at George Mason University. His research at MITRE has included automated planning and scheduling adversarial planning and reasoning against uncertainty. Dr. Lehner received a B.S. degree in Psychology from Bethany College. He also holds M.S. degrees in Psychology and Mathematics and a Ph.D. in Mathematical Psychology from the University of Michigan. Prior to his current employment at MITRE and at George Mason University Dr. Lehner served as the Technical Director of the Decision Sciences Section at PAR Government Systems Corporation. Providing realistic opposing forces is critical to the successful use of military training simulations. Unfortunately, a number of issues can make the manual control of realistic opposing forces difficult or unattainable, This paper explores these issues while discussing how Automatic Interactive Targets (AITs) can assist Training Exercise Controllers (TECs) in providing validated and realistic opposing forces in highly interactive situations. The features of the prototype Remote AIT Processing System (RAPS) are used to demonstrate how an AIT system can be designed to meet TEC requirements for automated entities, RAPS can provide remote control of AITs for existing or new systems while providing sufficient features to allow a TEC to appropriately select and control AITs for individual training exercises and crew proficiencies.

We compare the Iserver-Occam, Parix, PVM, and Express parallel programming environments on a Parsytec GCel with 512 T805 transputers. The comparison will be made by a detailed analysis of the performance of one particular application. In our approach we start with this application and isolate the basic (environment dependent) building blocks. These basic building blocks, which depend on floating point performance and communication capabilities of the environments, are analysed independently. We have measured point to point communication times, global communication times and floating point performance. All information will be combined into a time complexity analysis, allowing us to compare the environments on all relevant degrees of functionality. Together with demands for portability of the code, and development time (i.e. programmability), an overall judgement of the environments can be made. © 1994, Springer Verlag. All rights reserved.

While interpolating between successive postures of an articulated figure is not mathematically difficult, it is much more useful to provide postural transitions that are behaviorally reasonable and that avoid collisions with nearby objects. We describe such a posture interpolator which begins with a number of pre-defined static postures. A finite state machine controls the transitions from any posture to a goal posture by finding the shortest path of required motion sequences between the two. If the motion between any two postures is not collision free, a collision avoidance strategy is invoked and the posture is changed to one that satisfies the required goal while respecting object and agent integrity.< >

We present novel approaches to electromagnetic design of high-temperature superconducting quarter-wave parallel coupled-line microstrip filters. The dielectric constant of substrate materials used in high-temperature superconductor technology is too large to be accurately treated by traditional microwave circuit design software packages with analytical/empirical models. We employ electromagnetic field simulation and develop a look-up table method and a powerful space mapping optimization technique, which dramatically reduce the CPU time for the design process.< >

He received the B. Eng. degree in electrical engineering from Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1989. He is at present completing the M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering at Concordia University. (S'75–S'79–M'79–SM'86) received the Ph.D. degree from Southern Methodist University Dallas TX in 1979. He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. Dr. Elhakeem is a Senior Member of the Canadian Electrical Engineering Society and Armed Forces Association. He has chaired numerous technical sessions in IEEE Conferences was the Technical Program Chairman for IEEE Montech 1986 Montreal Canada. In this paper, we study the performance of a prioritized on-board baseband switch in conjunction with a multibeam satellite handling integrated services. The services considered for the analysis include voice, video, file transfer and interactive data. The prioritized switch uses both input and output buffering, switch speed-up as well as a two-phase head-of-line resolution algorithm, in order to reduce the buffer loss while maintaining acceptable user delays. The minimum required buffer capacity and switch speed-up for each service in a prioritized environment are found under uniform traffic conditions. It is shown that under uniform traffic conditions, only minimal buffering and switch speed-up are needed even for the lowest priority users. The performance dependence on the switch size is also substantially reduced with head of line resolution and buffering even in a prioritized environment.

Stewart McDowall was born in Dublin epublic of Ireland in 1967. He received the M. Eng. degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the Queen's University of Belfast in 1990. In the same year he was presented with a Distinction Award from the Department of Education of Northern Ireland and he is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in the Microwave Research Group at Q.U.B. His principal research area is the electromagnetic field mapping of microwave systems using concurrient programming. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers. Lee Thaim Wee was awarded the degree of B. Eng. in Electronics from the Queen's University of Belfast in July 1991. He is currently serving in the Malaysian Armed Forces. Vincent F. Fusco was educated at the Queen's Univeristy of Belfast where he obtained the degree of Ph.D. in 1982. He has worked as a research engineer on short-range radar and radio telementry systems. Currently he is a reader in Microwave Communications in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science the Queen's Univeristy of Belfast. His current research interests include non-linear microwave circuit simulation and concurrent programming techniques for electromagnetic field problems with particular emphasis on EMC applications. He has published numerous research papers in these areas. He is the author of the bookMicrowave Circuits Analysis and Computer Aided Design Prentice-Hall 1987. Dr Fusco is a Chartered Electrical Engineer and a Member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers.

A major limitation of the boundary element method (BEM) for the solution of electrical potential problems is the long computational time required. However, a large portion of the calculations involved can be viewed as being parallel in nature and can therefore be computed concurrently. This paper makes an effort to increase the efficiency of the BEM process using transputer-based multiprocessor computing techniques. The algorithms developed may equally well be applied to any multiprocessor system. The application selected to demonstrate the technique is the solution of an electrostatic problem governed by a two-dimensional Laplace equation. A parallel algorithm for problem setup and field extraction using BEM is designed and implemented on a transputer array. Special attention is directed to the utilization of the parallel processors to achieve maximum efficiency. The analysis in this work concentrates on the communication strategies for passing data between processors as well as a consideration of the workload attributed to each processor. The parallel algorithms were implemented using 3L Parallel Fortran;however, the choice of topology for the overall BEM implementation was limited by the fact that certain parts of the algorithm could only utilize a pipeline configuration of processors. Comprehensive results for the parallel BEM algorithm are given and they are encouraging, indicating that parallel processing has much to offer when applied to the boundary element method.

UNUSUAL CRITICAL-TEMPERATURE PHENOMENA IN FLUID MIXTURES CONTAINING PERFLUOROTRIBUTYLAMINE

The critical temperatures of binary mixtures containing perfluorotributylamine and a hydrocarbon are calculated and compared with experimental data. Systems containing low molecular weight hydrocarbons exhibit a positive deviation from linearity whereas a temperature minimum is reported for mixtures containing a higher molecular weight alkane. Between these extremes some mixtures display both a temperature minimum and a positive deviation. Theory can qualitatively reproduce this phenomenon. The calculations using an optimized value of the combining rule adjustable parameter (xi) yield good results whereas calculations with the van der Waals prescription (xi = 1) do not predict the behaviour. Better results are obtained using a theoretical alternative to mixture prescriptions for the attractive equation of state parameter. The critical temperatures of some ternary perfluorotributylamine + hydrocarbon mixtures arc also reported. The anomalous behaviour is also observed in the ternary systems. The critical conditions for a ternary mixture arc solved. The comparison between theory and experiment indicates that the temperature minimum of these ternary mixtures can be predicted but a positive deviation is not observed.

NOVEL CRITICAL TRANSITIONS IN TERNARY FLUID MIXTURES

Recent calculations indicate that a diverse range of critical equilibria are manifested by ternary fluid mixtures. A critical transition is frequently detected between two distinct two-phase regions of equilibria. That is, instead of two phases changing to one homogeneous phase, the critical transition results in the emergence of a different type of equilibria involving another two phases. Different types of transitions are observed depending on whether ps-liquid or lower or upper critical solution equilibria are involved. It is conceivable that some of the reported tricritical equilibria of ternary mixtures or quasi-binary fluids are instead a manifestation of one of these transitions.

INFLUENCE OF QUANTUM EFFECTS ON THE HIGH-PRESSURE PHASE-BEHAVIOR OF BINARY-MIXTURES CONTAINING HYDROGEN

The critical properties of binary mixtures containing hydrogen + argon, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane, and ethane are calculated and compared with experimental data. The properties of these mixtures are likely to be influenced by the quantization of translational motion at high densities. It is shown that the addition of a theoretically based quantum correction term to the equation of state can dramatically improve the quality of the agreement between theory and experiment. Even the simple van der Waals equation can then be used to calculate the critical properties of these mixtures with a reasonable degree of accuracy. The only additional experimental input data are the molecular weights of the constituent components. The experimental xi(12) parameters obtained from the analysis indicate weak interaction between the different component molecules of the mixture.

PREDICTING THE GAS-LIQUID CRITICAL PROPERTIES OF BINARY-MIXTURES - AN ALTERNATIVE TO CONVENTIONAL MIXING RULES

The critical properties of binary mixtures are predicted using a theoretical alternative to the conventional mixing rules for the contribution of the attractive equation of state parameter for the mixture. The method does not require adjustable combining rule parameters and the only experimental input data are the critical properties of the component pure substances. The comparison of calculated critical properties with experimental data yields very good agreement. The discrepancy between theory and experiment is often similar to that obtained by using optimized adjustable combining rule parameters. Consequently, genuinely accurate a priori predictions of critical equilibria are possible for many binary mixtures containing either non-polar or weakly polar components.
